But I'm intrigued to learn that your Demarest surname is pronounced "Demaray". I had seen a lot of Demarests in Nyack indexes and the cemetery there I visited, but hadn't before considered them to be related.... My PETER DEMARE was a wheelwright in Savannah, GA, 40 years old, in the 1860 census. He was a German immigrant born in Nassau, Germany, married to SOPHIA (age 25) born in Hanover, Germany, the census says. These names match the names of parents (Peter Demare and Sophia Landsmann) on their daughter, Margaret Demare Stone's death certificate. They had children Catherine and Henry in Savannah, and Margaret was born there circa 1864. After the Civil War they moved to Nyack, I was told. Margaret and her sister, "Kate Demarie" are buried in Massachusetts. The marriage of Peter and Sophia is listed as "Peter Demery and Sophia Landman" - so it is hard to tell just how the surname was pronounced. If your Demarests in Nyack were from Germany, perhaps ours are related. I did find a Peter Demare coming into New York from Havre in 1855 on the S.S. H.A. Miller, a ship filled with German farmers--he was listed as a U.S. citizen age 38. In the Savannah records I found that a Peter Demere was naturalized May 1856. But if the DEMARE surname is pronounced Demeray, perhaps his family was originally from France, before Germany. I throw out this mess of details because that's all I have at the moment; perhaps something here will ring a bell with you.
