In 1798, Rockland County was formed from Orange County. French's 1860 Gazetteer of New York states that the town of Monroe was formed from the town of Cornwall, March 23, 1799 as "Cheesecocks". Its name was changed to Southfield April 3, 1801 and to Monroe April 6, 1808. A part of Chester was taken off in 1845. It lies mostly among the Hudson Highlands and Ramapo Mtns. It may have included at the time the town of Tuxedo. A book identified "the gore" as lying in an area that we now know as Jennings Hollow, right on the NY and NJ State almost midway between ringwood Manor and the site of the Long Pond Iron Works. My ancestors lived in the area between 1785 to the early 1800's. My problem is I am attempting to find any Cemetery Records that are available and/or a list of any church's/traveling ministers that I can referance and possible find any records available during this time frame. Any help or suggestions will be greatly appreciated. David W. Wyble Sr.
