November 30, 1998 Jayne Loader loader@earthlink.net For a book on the 1929 Womens Air Derby (August 18 - 26, 1929) I am researching the life of the aviatrix Opal Logan Giberson Kunz, the wife of Dr. George F. Kunz, the gemologist. Mrs. Kunz lived in Tarrytown from 1908, when she was adopted at the age of twelve by Edward F. and Margaret Giberson. She was married to Dr. Kunz at Christ Episocal Church in Tarrytown on May 15, 1923. Thereafter, she lived in New York City. She came to prominence in 1928, when she became a pilot. At the time of the Women's Air Derby, Mrs. Kunz was involved in a negotiation to end her marriage, which resulted in an annulment of that marriage on November 21, 1929, by Supreme Court Justice Arthur S. Tompkins in Nyack. I am writing to ask if anyone can help me locate photographs, a clip file, or any other information pertaining to Mrs. Kunz and her birth, adoption, marriage, annulment or participation in the Women's Air Derby. Any suggestions for further research would be most appreciated. I am particularly interested in locating copies of documents pertaining to the annulment, if they survive, in finding out an accurate date of birth for Mrs. Kunz and in learning who her parents were and where she lived before she was adopted by the Gibersons. Thanks so much for your help. Sincerely, Jayne Loader 292-Rear Whiting Street Hingham, MA 02043 e-mail: loader@earthlink.net
