NY Queries Forum Board URL: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/NY/Rockland?read=1132 Surname: Wanamaker, Hemion ------------------------- I have some new information concerning the Wanamaker family in Airmont (Suffern) area. And also the Wanamaker family in the Nyack area. Kenneth C. Wanamaker the undertaker who owned Wanamaker and Carlough Funeral Home in Suffern was of the Nyack Wanamakers. His wife was of the Suffern Wanamakers. He died some time ago. Henry Wanamaker lived in the Airmont area and was married twice. From his first wife he had several children. He also owned a great deal of land in Airmont which he divided among his children. When his first wife died he married my great great grandmother who was a Forshay. They had 13 children to which my great grandfather, George Stanley Wanamaker was the youngest. When he was a young man he lost his leg in an accident cutting wood. He did have a sister named Julia and also a sister named Hannahmiel along with another sister and other brothers. He and my Great grandmother (Edith Mae (Mamie) VanRiper Wanamaker) had two children, Stanley George and Audrey. Both my grandfather Stanley George and his sister Audrey died in thier early thirties and are buried in Airmont Cementery. Much of the land in Airmont is still owned by members and decendents of the Wanamaker family. My mothers second husband, Russell Smith's mother was a Hemion whose mother was a Wanamaker. Stanley Gannon who ran and owned the old Gannon Store on the corner of the cemetery in Airmont's mother was a Wanamaker. We Wanamakers are everywhere and if anyone could unravel it all we are all decendants of John Wanamaker who was one of the fathers of the country and owned the Wanamaker department store in Philly. The Wanamakers also once spelled their name with two n's (Wannamaker) indicating perhaps they were of dutch decent but it also could have been a mistake in immigration as well as so many names were. I have really learned alot these few days of finding this site and I must say that the information is absolutely overwhelming. The Gary Wanamaker that wrote to me is from the Nyack Wanamakers but of course we are all related one way or another. Actually it seems lately Wanamakers are coming out of the woodwork. I know there was a Methodist minister in Georgia named George Wanamker and Sam Wanamaker the actor who he and I share the same birthday (not year) is one of the New York Wanamaker. He also has since died. Any information on the Wanamakers is really interesting and I am having fun with it. Please keep it up. Nice to know where you come from.
