    3. Hi:     My 2 cents worth. I lived about a mile from Brick Church cemetery. I went to the Brick Church school there for 8 years. I attended the Church and Sunday School also. Most of my relatives are buried there. I have never heard it called by the name of Loescher Vet Mem cemetery.               Bill Forshay - San Antonio, TX

    1. [NYROCKLA] New Database - The Troy Newspaper Project
    2. Bill & Cathy McGrath
    3. THE TROY NEWSPAPER PROJECT A multi volume Index of Death and Marriage Records transcribed from various Troy, NY newspapers A. The Troy New York Daily Whig for the years 1849 to 1858 is the EIGHTH set of newspapers recently added to the Troy Irish Genealogy Website. There are 3,777 reported deaths and 3,233 names on the reported marriages during this period. These records will be of great interest to genealogy researchers since the information in this data base predates the 1880 New York State law requiring the reporting of death and marriage records. These records may help with breaking down some of those "brick walls" that you have been struggling with. B. You can view these records by going to the Troy Irish Genealogy website at: www.rootsweb.com/~nytigs/ and click on PROJECTS and then click on THE TROY NEWSPAPER PROJECT. It should be noted that these records, like most of the TIGS data series, cover the general population in the area and are NOT restricted to Irish surnames. C. The following age distribution of the 3,777 deaths will be of interest: 1. No age was reported for 1,366 names and in 28 cases "child" was reported as the age while 23 cases were identified as "infant". 2. A breakdown of deaths by age groups shows: Under 1 year - 87 names. Age 1 to 10 - 396 names. Age 11 to 19 - 180 names. Age 20 to 29 - 353 names. Age 30 to 39 - 304 names. Age 40 to 49 - 222 names. Age 50 to 59 - 216 names. Age 60 to 69 - 228 names. Age 70 to 79 - 219 names. Age 80 to 89 - 111 names. Age 90 to 99 - 18 names. Age 100 plus - 3 names. D. While 548 of the 3,233 marriage records showed no indication of residence, those records where the residence was reported are of interest to researchers outside of the Troy Area as they show numerous cities and towns throughout New York State as well as 30 other states and even 12 foreign countries. Some specifics are: 1. While most of the records were for the Capital District Area, other areas throughout New York State were reported. Some locations in New York State and the number of records were: Albany-66, Albia-9, Ballston-6, Ballston Spa-4, Berlin-22, Brunswick-136, Buffalo-8, Cambridge-12, Cohoes-22, Easton-5, Glens Falls-8, Grafton-21, Greene-5, Greenbush-12, Green Island-40, Hoosick-19, Hoosick Falls-5, Hudson-6, Kinderhook-4, Lansingburgh-64, Nassau-11, Petersburg-9, Pittstown-46, Poestenkill-20, Sand Lake-27, Saratoga-16, Schaghticoke-42, Schenectady-13, Stephentown-4, Stillwater-5, Syracuse-7, Troy-1,286, Utica-6, Waterford-19, Watervliet-15, West Troy-41, West Sand Lake-6 and White Creek-7. 2. There were a sizable number of records from the neighboring states of Massachusetts, Vermont, Connecticut and New Jersey. Connecticut has 24 records, Massachusetts had 69 records including 13 from Boston, Vermont had 39 including 14 from Bennington and New Jersey had 12 records. 3. For the New York City area, there were 11 records for Brooklyn and 93 records for New York City. 4. Residence was also indicated from the following states: Alabama, Arkansas, California, Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, New Hampshire, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania including 11 from Philadelphia, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Wisconsin and the District of Columbia. 5. Foreign countries listed as the place of residence were Canada, China, Cuba, England, France, Germany, The Netherlands, Nicaragua, Scotland, Sweden, Sandwich Islands and Mexico. 6. At the time of the 1840 census, Troy, New York was the fourth wealthiest city in the USA on a per capita basis. This may account for the numerous individuals from across the United States coming to Troy to be married. E. There are several interesting death and marriage records in this group of the Troy Daily Whig newspapers. 1. The wedding of ex-president Millard E. Fillmore to Mrs. Caroline Carmichael McIntosh, a wealthy widow on February 10, 1858. Fillmore was the 13th president of the United States. 2. The wedding of Don Fermin Ferrer to Martha E. Winterbotham on May 9, 1858. Ferrer was the ex-president of Nicaragua. 3. The deaths in Green Island, NY of John Reed and his wife Caroline Hogle Reed on May 22, 1858. A 1858 New York Times Article on these two tragic deaths, is available at the following address: http://query.nytimes.com/gst/abstract.html?res=F00710FB38551B7493C7AB178ED85F4C8584F9 4. The wedding of famed Swedish opera singer Jenny Lind to Otto Goldschmidt on February 5, 1852. Born Johanna Maria Lind on October 6, 1820, Jenny was often referred to as the "Swedish Nightingale". F. To date the 8 newspaper groupings added to the TIGS website cover 15,063 marriage names and 11,332 death records. Keep in mind that all these records predate New York State's recording of these vital statistics. Twenty more years of death and marriage records from the Troy Daily Whig, 1859 to 1878, will be added to the TIGS website in the next few months. Regards, Bill McGrath TIGS Project Coordinator Clifton Park, NY

    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: winspeare Surnames: WEIANT KNOWLTON WALDRON Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.newyork.counties.rockland/3593/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I am researching descendants of Hannah Weiant (1812-1837), daughter of Catherine Waldron and George Weiant of Haverstraw, Rockland Co., NY. She apparently married James Knowlton around 1830 and had at least two children before she died. One was Thomas Knowlton, b ca. 1832, who probably appears as Thomas Newton in grandfather Weiant's household in the 1850 census. A Thomas Knowlton is listed in George Weiant's estate records (1855). Unfortunately I have been totally unable to find James and his second wife, Sophia, in 1850 and wonder if anyone knows anything about a missing piece of the census that year. James was on the 1840 census in Haverstraw with a woman the right age to be Sophia (b Apr 1822) and a girl child, 1-5, who should be Emma (later marries John Linkletter). Emma was born either 1837 (then dau of Hannah) or 1840 (then dau of Sophia). To complicate things, the LDS entry by some submitter says James had a Thomas and a Anna G. Knowlton in the 1830s. The Waldron cemetery shows Hannah Weiant Knowlton and also a George W. Knowlton (1842-1851), a son of Sophia and James. By the time James shows up again, in 1860 and still in Haverstraw, he has many children in his household: Maria, Melvina or Malvina, Alexander, and Richard (and by 1870 Sophia, Jr.). Strangely, on the 1860 census and no other, Maria and Melvina are said to have been born in Virginia. I have searched the entire US 1850 census for James' family under every spelling known to Knowlton and cannot locate them. Plus, I have no idea who Sophia is. Any response welcome.
