I don't know if spelling is a factor or not, but I do have listed a Hannah Elizabeth Carneelson as Clara's mother. The mention of the Salisbury Manor is exciting, because I was told my my late grandmother that the Betchley clan had lived at a castle in Nyack, and were buried there. The only addresses I have for my great grandfather John Henry Betchley is 35 Gedney St and 106 Piermont, both in South Nyack, and right down the road from each other. I contacted the Nyack Library years ago, but they were only able to find the two addresses I just mentioned. The Native American info is also interesting, I've always wondered if I was related to any tribes, I've always been interested in their lifestyle and how they do things. As for Ancestry.com, I signed up years ago, and still have the "free trial", but I can't view a lot of info on it. Once in a while I pay for the service, and get what I can from it. I'll probably do that again soon, I need to organi! ze my info so I can figure out what I need to look for! I'll probably email you off list too with more info. It's great to hear from you, and I agree, it is getting better!!!! Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: Janetkucera1 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.newyork.counties.rockland/920.1310.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Clara Williams was my grandfather's (John Henry)sister. As previously mentioned, they had other siblings, Eva, Grace, Albert, etc. From what you said, your grandfather, John Henry Betchley was her second husband. Then she had other children, including George Betchley, my mom's cousin. I remember the name Jennie, from family conversations and I did meet Harriet. Yes, George Betchley married Anna (I never knew her maiden name, but she was Italian) and they lived in Yonkers. They had a son and daughter (Clara). I found your message from ncanfield57 most interesting. There was always talk in the family that we were related to the Cornelisons who owned Salisbury Manor in South Nyack. The Manor was demolished when the TZ bridge was built. It had been built in the 1600s by a British officer, Captain Sylvester Salisbury. I never knew the connection but afte reading about a marriage between DDr. Abraham Cornelison and Sarah Williams (2nd wife), I now see the possible relat! ionship. I had researched the Westervelt, Salisbury, Cornelison web-site and came up with Abraham and Eliza (1st wife) and Sarah and then Anna a 3rd wife. They really went through their women in those days, didn't they. Anyway, George D. Williams (born July 1845), your great great grandfather, is listed in the 1900 census and even in the Morman church registry. In various census his occupations are listed as stationary engineer and boatman. A census lists the the family address at 185 Main Street, Nyack. There was also a family story that one of the Williams ancestors sailed to the US, jumped ship and changed his name from Antoinette to Williams. I don't know if this was George but I can find nothing about his parents, except they were born in New York. So, we may belong to a non-legal immigrant family!!!! There's also a Williams family story that we have some Native American blood in our line. Aunt Grace, Clara's and John Henry's sister sure did look like she had! some Indian blood running through her veins. Checking out NYS tribes , we think they may have been Blackfoot. Oh well, I find this to be fascinating. I haven't signed up with Ancestors.com. If you want to contact me directly, I'm Janetkucera@aol.com. This is getting better and better. I was going thru George Conklin's National Archives records and a Sarah Ebersole wrote an affidavit to confirm that Catharine was the only wife of George Conklin for the purposes of pension from being a soldier in the war of 1812. The dates are correct as the affidavit was in the 1850's and was from Rockland county NY. It could be that George and Catharine were Sarah's parents. 1. [NYROCKLA] March 17, 2012 Meeting - Genealogical Society of Rockland Co -- Happy Valley
    2. Robert Protzmann
    3. GSRC Presentation by Tom Riley SUBJECT - Happy Valley DATE: March 17M 2012 TIME: 1:30 pm PLACE: New City Library Auditorium ==========================================================TThe alumni of Happy Valley School in Pomona, NY celebrated its 100th Anniversary during a Centennial Reunion on February 18th, 2011. Happy Valley School was in existence from 1911 to 1974 but in the hearts of those who spent a portion of their childhood years there it lives on forever. Happy Valley School was an outgrowth of The Five Points of Industry which was established in the worst ghetto of New York City in 1854. How life was like there in the 19th Century can be seen in the motion picture, The Gangs of New York. During the 1911 Diphtheria Epidemic the Board of Trustees of the Five Points House felt they must get the impoverished children under their care out of New York City. A Board member, William Church Osborne who owned 311 acres in Pomona, NY donated the land to establish a home for neglected and abandoned children. Claude Boorum, a former Principal in the Garrison School System and friend of William Church Osborne, NY was appointed Superintendent of Happy Valley Colony. Boorum loved farming and cared deeply about children His boundless energy guided the establishment of Happy valley Colony for 20 years. When he left in 1931 over 155 children were residents and another 280 children were in Boarding homes. From the age of 7 to 17 I grew up at HV along with my brothers and a sister. We spent the 1950's there and it had a major impact on my life and on the lives of thousands of children who at one time or another called Happy Valley School home. Many of its children served ably in the cause of freedom and became pillars of their community. Mel Hancock, a former resident of HV is making a documentary about the history of Happy Valley School. We invite all our members and those who grew up there to attend this fascinating lecture presented by The Genealogical Society of Rockland County. Genealogical Society of Rockland County Programs are FREE and OPEN TO THE PUBLIC. Bob Protzmann Membership Chairman
