    1. [NYROCKLA] Children of Peter LENT (1739-1782)
    2. Leslie B. Potter
    3. Dear List, Excuse me while I crow a bit. T he copy of Cole's "History of Rockland County, New York", which I ordered last week this project arrived yesterday afternoon. I have found the answers to some of my questions. The following data on Peter LENT's children was harvested from the Baptism record from the Dutch Reformed Church at Tappan, New York, which was included as an appendix in the "History of Rockland County, New York" by David Cole D.D. (1884) and reprinted with an all name Index by the Rockland County Historical Society in 1986. Children of Petrus [Peter] LENT (1739-1782) and Maria DE KLERCK, his wife, of Orange County, New York were: Baptism # Name Date of birth Date of baptism (2098) Catharina 3/10/1765 3/31/1765 (2173) Kobus 9/5/1767 9/20/1767 (2266) Adolph 1/18/1771 2/17/1771 (2333) Maria 2/3/1773 2/28/1773 (2449) Adolph 12/18/17_5 1/14/1776 Maria DE KLERCK LENT was widowed in 1782. She was married to Gysbert BOGART by 1783 and settled in Ontario, Canada with her second husband in 1784, after having filed a claim with the British government for the loss of her interest in the LENT property in Orange County, New York. Nelson Burton LENT's data on the children of Peter LENT (1739-1782), Loyalist of Orange County, New York contained in his book on page 98 is completely contradicted by the Baptism records of the Dutch Reformed Church at Tappan, New York. My sincere thanks to the Rockland County Historical Society of the All Name Index that they included in the 1986 reprint edition of Cole's "History of Rockland County, New York. I am most pleased that I decided to indulge myself and purchased a copy of Cole's History of Rockland County, New York.

    1. [NYROCKLA] Peter LENT (1739-1782) and Maria, h/w, of Orange (now Rockland) County, New York - veteran of the French and Indian War and Loyalist
    2. Leslie B. Potter
    3. Dear List: I am seeking information on Captain Peter LENT (1739-1782), of Orange County, New York, who was the son of Adolph LENT and Cassie HARRING, of Orange County, New York. Peter LENT was married to Maria ______. I need to know if Peter LENT and Maria _____, h/w, had any children and the dates of birth and death for these children. I also need to know about the circumstances of Peter LENT's death in 1782 and his service with the British Army during the American Revolution. Documentation on which the query is based: Peter LENT served as an officer in several military units from Orange County during the French and Indian War. (Please see Muster Rolls of New York Provincial Troops 1755-1764. Edward F. DeLancy, editor. reprinted by Heritage Books 1990.) However, with the advent of the American Revolution, Peter LENT, of Orange County was a Loyalist, as was his father, Adolph LENT (1703-1780). (Please see American Loyalist Claims. compiled by Peter Wilson Coldham. 1980 at page 280.) Peter LENT married Maria ______ (1744-1837). Maria LENT joined her brothers-in-law, James LENT and Abraham LENT, in filing the claim for the loss of Adolph LENT's property in Orange County, NY. However, by 1783 she had remarried. Her second husband was Gysbert BOGART (1742-1829), son of Cornelius BOGART, was a resident of Goshen, Orange County, NY. James LENT and Abraham LENT settled in Nova Scotia. Gysbert BOGART, his wife, Maria _____ LENT BOGART and his son, Abraham BOGART (1767-1848), settled near Adolphustown, Ontario, Canada in 1784. Unfortunately, Nelson Burton LENT, who published a LENT genealogy in 1902, seems to have grafted the descendants of Peter and Trintje DeWITT LENT, of Dutchess County, on to the family tree of Peter LENT of Orange County. (Please see my e-mail to the Godfrey Memorial Library below.) Thank you for your kind consideration in this matter. Very truly yours, Leslie Potter Glen Mills, PA Behold a piece of LENT trivia for the Godfrey Memorial Library. Peter LENT (1739-1782) of Orange County, NY was a veteran of the French and Indian War* and a Loyalist during the American Revolution**. He was married to Maria ______ LENT (1744-1837), who was his executrix** and a party to the Loyalist claim, which her brothers-in-law filed in an attempt to recover funds to compensate the family for the loss of her father-in-law's (Adolph LENT [1703-1780]) property in Orange County, NY**. He was married to Trintje DE WITT****. Family lore indicates that his parents transported him from Quebec Canada to Haverstraw NY as a 3 or 4 day-old baby to register his birth there so that he would be a US citizen. I spoke with a person in the town offices in Haverstraw and she told that the paper records start from 1881, 6 years after his birth. His parents were Joseph CYR (MICLON) and Marie BERTHELLE. Donald was born in July 1875 or 1876, married in NH in December 1899 and died in MA in 1938. Are there any earlier birth records in Rockland county? 3. The only possibility would be a church baptismal record - was he a Roman Catholic? St. Peter's in Haverstraw was in existence at that time. Today I am visiting, for the first time, the American-French Genealogical Society library in Woonsocket RI which is about 15 miles from my house. I am trying to answer the long mystery about my grandfather's birth place. http://www.afgs.org/ I can send the information to you. What format would be best for you - printed copies, GEDCOM, PDF images of trees? I use the now-old Family Tree Maker version 10. I can send an extracted file via email if you can import/open in whatever software you are using. This message board apparently will not accept attached .PDF files so I can't send a quick look at where our families connect. I may have to actually join ancestry.com rather than just lurking! Now that they are all gone, my Genealogy Research is the only way I can attempt to know them. :-) I realize that the times when my ancestors lived were difficult, but the story I have discovered in my research process about my Uncle Larry, really breaks my heart. I've already placed a memorial marker on the grave of one who had lain in an unmarked grave for too many years. She was my own fraternal twin who died when we were only 13 months old. I believe that GOD guided me to her grave, in Oregon, which was verified by one who kept the cemetery records of grave plots. I would also like to place a small marker on my Uncle Larry's resting place, because he has a name. He is not just an unknown number. He & his resting place deserves to be remembered. That is pretty difficult to do though, when I'm having such difficulty in finding case files or records, with respect to his residency at Letchworth Village. I'm afraid that I can't even obtain his Death Certificate, if New York does not make them available to family members, until 50 years has passed. I do hope you find this reply message, though it is several months late in answer to your thoughful & helpful "LETCHWORTH" Bulletin Board Message. Did you know that I had to sign in to the Ancestry.co.uk site, in order to send you this reply. Hmmm...don't know why. Anyway, again, I am thrilled to find your message. In answer to your questions; "Oh YES"...I would be so happy to receive copies of the photos that you have taken & the rubbing that you have made of the "Old Letchworth Cemetery Memorial Monument" engraved name of my maternal Uncle LAWRENCE "LARRY" LANGSTRAND. I would love to hear more of what you care to share about the "Letchworth Village Institution" and/or about the "Old Letchworth Cemetery. And yes, you were right. I live in the Northwest, in the state of Washington. I never met any of my extended family members who immigrated & were born in & around Brooklyn, New York. I am the only one in my family who was born out west. Never met either set of Grandparents, Aunts, Uncles, or Cousins. Here is my Email Address, if you would like to contact me privately. Again, "Thank You" for your help & generous offer of photos & monument rubbings of my Uncle Larry's name. Most sincerely, Patricia (KNUTSON) Chaney-Hogge, in Bremerton, WA Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I appreciate anything you might be able to provide, that would be helpful to me, in finding documents, Grave Marker number...anything at all. I never met any of my relatives who lived on the east coast & all who might have had some answers are all gone now. Of course, most of that generation were pretty secretive. The only thing I ever heard from my mother, was that her younger brother had been instatutionalized at a young age, due to his disabilities, but it seems even my mother did not know where Uncle Larry was located. My mother & father are both deceased now, & all of their siblings are gone too. I was just grateful that when I called up the US New York 1940 Census, I found Uncle Larry listed among the patients at Letchworth. He was only 7 years old at the time. My heart breaks to think of the life that he had there. Anyway, I'm so glad to fianlly meet another person, who has the same common bond as I do. Somehow I find that comf! orting. May GOD comfort those dear family members, who now reside with Him in Heaven. My heart breaks to think of so many who were removed from their homes to be placed in crowded institutions such as the Letchworth Institution. Seems that so many of these unfortunate people were removed from their home & family, because of the shame their families felt toward them. Just makes me want to cry for them. Again, thank you so very much, for your reply. May GOD guide you toward those things you want to achieve for your beloved Aunt. I too, would like to find out where my Uncle Larry is buried, & what number marks his grave. I also would like to gain access to his medical records & any other case file information. It's a shame that those records remain so allusive to those of us who are searching for that info. I would love to be able to place a proper memorial marker upon my Uncle Larry's grave. Though I never met him, he is a vital part of my ancestors. And to me, he is worth mo! re than just some unknown number. Since I never had the opportunity to meet any of my extended family, I like to learn as much about these people as I can via my genealogical research. In learning about them, I come to feel like I know them & I the more I know, the more I come to care about them. May I ask you, what the name of your Aunt was? Were you able to find her name on the Memorial that was placed in memory of those who are buried in the Old Letchworth Cemetery? Did you read my previous comments under this Heading? I did find a couple of news articles about the Letchworth Cemetery Monument. There are some names listed in the articles, but I haven't had much luck with my Internet searches of these names. Anyway, they are pretty good articles. Warm regards to you & your Sister. I sure wish I could be more helpful to you. Its funny how you come across the same information when doing your own research. I believe our father had the information. I am the process of finding out how he got it so maybe it will help us both. Wish I could answer your question about how to secure a memorial marker for her. I live all the way out in the NW, so I cannot make face-2-face contact with people who may know more about these un-named souls who are buried in this cemetery. I have an Uncle who is buried there, & I have no idea as to whom I should contact to simply find out what number he was assigned for burial. So my question to you is; who did your contact or what did you do, to find out the Marker Number for your paternal Aunt who is buried in this Old Letchworth Cemetery. Surely there must be someone who cares & is compassionate enough to provide the answers that family members see about a former Letchworth patient & about details as to their burial in that old cemetery. I thank you for any helpful information you might be able to provide me, that would assist me in my search for details. Is your! Aunt listed on the Monument? My Uncle's name is listed on that monument. At least there was a kind person who took photos of his name on the monument, but he could not provide me with anymore details. He sounded very concerned that he had already given me too much information. Haven't heard from him since. Anyway...good luck with your continued search. I wish you well. I wish I could be more helpful. Most sincerely, Patricia Hogge in Bremerton, WA Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
