Seeking proof of birth/baptismal and parents for Mary Martha Ver Valen bn. N.Y. State, probably Rockland Count. Zabrislie Genealogy incorrectly states she was Mary Martha Bogert, bn. Jan 15. 1849, who md. George W. Van Valen 10 Jan. 1872. Family Bible states she was Mary Martha Ver Valen bn. Jan 15, 1850, as does her tombstone and death certificate. H. Durie's copy of the Tappan Church Records states she was md. 10/Jan 1872 at the home of Mrs. J. Bogert of Tappan. I have her original mar. cert. from the Tappan church stating her mar. date and that she was Mary Martha Ver Valen. Her death cert. is the only file I can locate with parent names given as Abram Ver Valen and Eliza Miner (Minor). Mary's husband George W. Van Valen was her cousin, bn. Dec. 9, 1851 at Harrington Twp., Alpine/Closter/Demarest, N.J. He was the son of David Van Valen and Sarah Jane Bogert . Mary and George W. lived in Harrington Twp and were my Great Grandparents. I still live in Closter, N.J. Mary M. Ver Valen transferred her membership from the Piermont Ref. Dutch Church to the Closter Ref. Dutch Church Feb. 25, 1873. The naming pattern of their children suggest they were somehow related to Abraham Ver Valen and wife (1) Elizabeth Earl or (2) Elizabeth Theresa Vanderlinde Felter. Children of Mary Martha Ver Valen and George Washington Van Valen: Elizabeth Theresa, bn Jan 10, 1874, d. Oct. 1, 1877 Earl, bn. Dec. 1, 1876, md. Jason, I cannot find Oakridge even in Thomas Gordon's 1834 "History of New Jersey" so I'm at a loss as to where to send you. However, there is a modern day town, Oakland, NNW of Ridgewood and Paterson that could conceiveably had a predecessor known as Oakridge. Nothing I know indicates that, but the similarity in names and that you're looking for information on a New Jersey locale on the Rockland list makes me at least consider some vague relationship between Oakridge and Rockland. Sorry I can't be more definitive. Best regards, Kelvin Kean Elverson, Pennsylvania
I'm new to this list, so may have missed this. I'm looking for info on Cornelius QUACKENBUSH, b. 1818, & his wife, Mary. One of their daughters, Caroline b. 1847, married my ggrandfather Samuel LANE b.1846. The QUACKENBUSH family lived in Ramapo, and then moved to NYC in the mid 1800s. Would appreciate any help. Thanks......Laurie Byrd navy81@flash.net
Jason, I am also sending a copy of this reply to the Dutch-Colonies List as there is general interest in these early New Netherland families. You asked for information on the parents of Cornelis Corneliszen Smith and his wife Sytje Minnelay. The parents of Cornelis Smith were Cornelis Adriaensz. Smith and Anna Frans. Their marriage is recorded in the NYC DRC. The intentions were listed on 1 August 1680: "Cornelis Adriaenszen, young man, from Thuyl in Gelderlant, and Anna Frans, young woman, from New Albany, both living in Stuyvesant's farm." There is further information that the marriage took place at the bridegroom's sickbed on 8 August 1680. Perhaps Cornelis was an invalid. In the October 1997 issue of the NYG&B "Record" I published the results of recent research on the Smith family in Gelderland records. There you will find that Cornelis was baptized on 26 February 1660 in the DRC of the village of Tuil. His parents were Adriaen Lamberts Smith and his second wife, Dirckske Cornelis, "young daughter of Haaften" (a village near Tuil). There is NO indication that Dircksje had the surname of Trommels. There was *another* woman in New Netherland named Dirckje Cornelius Trommels, and the two individuals have been confused by some researchers. The marriage of Adriaen and Dirckje took place in Tuil on 7 September 1656. Sytie Minnelay was the daughter of Albert Minne and his wife "Meinsje" Jans. At least that is one of many forms of her given name and the one used in her wedding record in the Flatbush DRC where this couple was married on 9 November 1684. You can note the arrival of Albert's parents and siblings in Carl Boyer's "Ship Passenger Lists" on page 133. The family was aboard the ship "de Statyn" when it sailed from the Netherlands on 17 September 1663: "Minne Johannes, wife and four children, two 8 years (twins?), one six years and the other one year old; also his wife's sister, and his servant." According to Dorothy Moos in her "Blauvelt Family Genealogy", volume I (page 9), Grietje Minne, who married Abraham Gerritsen Blauvelt on 8 April 1691, was a sister of Albert. Their parents were Minne Johannes and Rensje Feddans, and the family came from the province of Frisia in the Netherlands. I have not been able to find the baptism of Sytje Minne/Minnelay after her parents were married in the Flatbush DRC in November 1684. I did find baptisms for four of their younger children -- Rensje 30 Oct.1692 Brooklyn Grietje 11 Apr.1695 Tappan Aeltje 15 Jul.1697 Tappan Jannetje 13 Apr.1700 Tappan At little Grietje's baptism in the Tappan DRC in 1695, the parents' names are given as Albert Minne and "Meensje Jepes". I suspect that Meensje was also from a Frisian family and that this is probably the most accurate recording of her name. I would hazard a guess that this might be the Frisian equivalent of the Dutch "Wilhelmina Jans". The marriage of Cornelis Smith and Sytje Minnelay took place in the Tappan DRC on 15 October 1707. It is published in the Tappan marriages on page 164 of the July 1953 issue of the NYG&BR. The transcriber mangled the names! "Cornelis Liuids ["obviously" should be "Smids"] born on the farm on Maades [i.e. Manhattan, at Stuyvesant's bowery] and Seytye Moninlay (sic), young woman, born on Long Island in the Bay." I found 10 children baptized as the children of Cornelis Smith and Seytie Minnelay in the Tappan DRC. These (including the names of godparents) can be found in the appendix to David Cole's "History of Rockland County, NY": 1. Mensie 1708 2. Kornelis 1710 (died young) 3. Albert 1713 4. Kornelis 1715 5. Johannes 1717 (died young) 6. Jannetje 1719 (died young) 7. Dirckje 1721 8. Johannes 1723 9. Jannetje 1725 (baptized at Schraalenburgh DRC) 10.Maria 1728 You can now add some more limbs to your family tree! Dorothy On Wed, 17 Jun 1998 JasonA1016@aol.com wrote: > Hello! I am new to the list. Louise, According to Russell Gasero's 1992 book, "Historical Directory of the Reformed Church in America" (page 387), the Kakiat DRC was organized in 1774. It is now called Spring Valley, NY - West New Hempstead. Dorothy On Thu, 18 Jun 1998, Arthur Post wrote: > Hi everyone, > > Does anyone know what year the Kakiat Dutch Reformed Church > began? Hello... My ancestor Daniel A. Blauvelt died in 1831 in Oakridge, NJ. Does anyone know which county Oakridge is in? I searched the atlases and the internet and was not able to find that information. Thank you, Jason Coffman
I tried to send this post privately, but it would not go through. Bob, I forwarded your Query on the NYROCKLA MailList to our GSRC researcher, Marie Koestler (marie_koestler@juno.com) Here is her response: He can try "Village Clerk of Suffern, 61 Washington Avenue, Suffern, NY 10901 for a record of birth prior to 1880. After 1880, New York State Archives, Cultural Education Center, Albany, NY 12230. Also try Mr. Gardiner Watts, Suffern Village Museum, Suffern Municipal Building, 61 Washington Avenue,Suffern, NY 10901 on the chance they have information re the family in their files. Bob Protzmann

Hi all, Can anyone tell me if the records for the Kakiat Dutch Reformed Church have been published or copied by the LDS? I am interested in looking at these records. Thank you for any assistance. Louise Post, British Columbia, Canada

Joan, There are two editions of Bailey's book, the original hardcover of which The Holland Society which was limited to 330 copies, if my memory serves me correctly, and the paperback reprint by Dover Books, originally released in the mid or late '60's. The original can be found, and it's a lovely book with a beautiful binding and very, very large type, but the current market price runs somewhere between $100 and $300; I know because I saw a copy about six months ago in a local used book store marked at $300. You should look for a copy of the Dover reprint, if you can find it. I don't believe it's in print any longer--so Dover is not a source for it--so you'll need to shop with dealers of used books, either on-line or in your community. But, if you have 17th century Dutch ancestors who lived in the vicinity of present day New York City, it's a gold mine of information. Best regards, Kelvin Kean Elverson, Pennsylvania
Would anyone know where I could purchase (for a reasonable price) two copies (one for me and a friend of mine) of Rosemary Bailey's book? Joan Brooks

I also received the information that Doris Lane forwarded to us on the new Genealogy Library, and the site does look wonderful. I live far away from my research area and this looks like a marvelous means to check out some material I normally have no opportunity to see. However, for me there is a problem. I will not under any circumstances put my credit card number on the internet, no matter what safety precautions they promise. I am willing to give my credit card number over the telephone or mail them a cheque in U.S. dollars. So, I did proceed to call the Genealogy Library 800 number and was told there is no other way to join but the internet. They will not take telephone or mail orders for this service. I don't know if other researchers have similar concerns with this issue of credit cards over the internet. Maybe I am among the few who consider this a problem. Perhaps if there are enough of us who are concerned about this issue, we could convince Broderbund (Family Tree Maker) to reconsider the options and provide us with an alternative method of joining. This Genealogy Library is a wonderful opportunity that I really do not want to miss. How do my fellow researchers feel about this issue? Regards, Louise Post, British Columbia, Canada
Hello, all: I'm looking for information on, and parentage of, George BLAKE, born c1829 Prussia, died 21 Dec 1892 Rockland County. He emigrated to the U.S. in the 1840's, eventually residing in Rockland. 1865 NYS (Haverstraw) census states he was a naturalized citizen and tailor by trade; however, I can't locate his naturalization record in Rockland Co. Could he possibly have applied in NYC? George married c1852 Phebe JOHNSON (1830-1897). There was a John BLAKE family that arrived in NYS 8 May 1848 on the ship "Constitution" from Belfast, Ireland. Could these two families be related? Any information would be appreciated. Sincerely, Joan Brooks Stony Point, NY

Hi everyone, Is anyone familiar with an area of Rockland County and Bergen County (before the border change) that was known as TAPPAN FARMS. This was apparently land owned by William Bayard and leased out to tenant farmers. I would like to learn more about this property. Louise E. Post, British Columbia, Canada
