July 18, 1998, Faith B. Godbey, FAITHBG@aol.com, I am interested in finding any information concerning Elizabeth Van Wart Keyser, 1885-1966. She was last to be buried in family cemetary in Stony Point. Her father (also buried there) was Wesley Van Wart. I would like to find his parent's names and any older lineage that is available. I am hoping to fulfill my mother's wish to become a member of the DAR and understand we are somehow related to Isaac Van Wart, who helped capture Andre. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Hi everyone, I would like to purchase a copy of "The History of Rockland County, New York" by David Cole. I understand it is availabe from Bergen Historic Books. I have the address, but would like the telephone number or an e-mail address. Because I am ordering from Canada, I need to find out the cost of postage, etc., before I send a money order and do not wish to wait for snail mail. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Thank you, Louise Post, British Columbia, Canada

Debbie, Yes, Tompkins Cove is part of Rockland Co. It is north of the Village of Haverstraw, and I believe, part of the Town of Haverstraw. Jason, This one is simple. Before 1798, Rockland County was part of Orange Co. It was sometimes called Orange Co South of the Mountins. Because of the difficulty in getting back and forth over the mountains, Orange Co was split in two in 1798. South of the Mountains became Rockland Co. Tappan is in Rockland Co, but was of course, in Orange Co until the split. Just to confuse things, there is an Old Tappan, which is just south of the NY/NJ border, in Bergen Co, NJ. Tappan is in Rockland County. But Rockland County was carved from the southestern corner of the original Orange County about 1800 (the exact date escapes me at the moment and I'm too lazy to go look it up). Tappan has always occupied the same place regardless of the county name. Confusingly there is also an Old Tappan right across the line in Bergen County, New Jersey. Kelvin Kean Elverson, Pennsylvania

Hello all.. I have often seen Tappan in Orange Co. and I have also seen Tappan in Rockland Co., NY. Which is the correct county? Or was the county divided and Tappan ended up in Rockland Co.? Thanks. Regards, Jason Coffman
[Thanks Joe. Forwarding... --Bruce ] Dear Bruce, If you receive any queries on the above mentioned families I would be happy to help. My wife, a desendant of Dirk Straatmaker, the father of Jan one of the original Tappan patentees, and I are the genealogiest/historians for the family association. The family history book, that was printed for our last reunion, August 1997, is located in the New City Library. Please feel free to contact us if we may be of any help to you in this great work, the internet has made digging into one's family much easier and give one a chance to contact others with the same or similar family interests. It is west of Goshen and south of Middletown. U.S. Route 6 passes through it, including the towns of Denton and Slate Hill. I'm all too familiar with the name, because I misread its spelling in the 1860 census district name for my great-great grandfather William Winters of Denton. --Bruce (Bruce Hamilton, Redondo Beach, CA) bhami@netcom.com (preferred) bhami@hesp.es.xerox.com --day 310-333-3538 --day http://home.earthlink.net/~bhami/
