    1. Peterson
    2. LINDA
    3. I would like to add newly acquired information to a query I submitted June 6, 1998 #209. John Lester Peterson lived on the SW corner of New Broadway and Mountain Avenue in Grand View. He is listed in the phone directory for the years 1909-10, 1914-15, 1916-17, 1924-25 and 1928-29. It says he had a hotel in NYC. We believe the name of this hotel was The Belmont (possibly on 4th Avenue, near the Post Office). I still have not located a burial site, but know it is somewhere in a cemetery near the home. Any further information will be greatly appreciated.

    1. GEORGE BLAKE/PHEBE JOHNSON
    2. Joan Brooks
    3. I'm posting this query again for any new members of the Rockland List. Looking for information on, and parentage of, George BLAKE, born c1829 Prussia, died 21 Dec 1892 Rockland County. He emigrated to the U.S. in the 1840's, eventually residing in Rockland. 1865 NYS (Haverstraw) census states he was a naturalized citizen and tailor by trade; however, I can't locate his naturalization records in Rockland Co. Could he possibly have applied in NYC? George married c1852 Phebe JOHNSON (1830-1897). There was a John BLAKE family that arrived in NYS 8 May 1848 on the ship "Constitution" from Belfast, Ireland. Could these two families be related? An information would be appreciated. Joan Brooks Stony Point, NY

    1. cemeteries
    2. Protzman, RL (Robert)
    3. Laurie, I know of no single listing of all cemeteries in Rockland Co, NY. The cemeteries in the Town of Clarkstown were not only listed, but so were their residents, in "That All May Be Remembered", by Peter Krell (deceased), a member of the Genealogical Society of Rockland Co and the now defunct, Society for the Presevation of Rockland Cemeteries. Peter's work on cemeteries in the Town of Ramapo will hopefully be available within the next year. There are many cemetery listings in the various works of the BUDKE Collection, which is available at the New York Public Library. Some portions of Budke's works are available in the New City Library in Rockland Co. Bob Protzmann Membership Chairman, GSRC

    1. Scots in Kakiate 1738-1764
    2. In 1738, 1739 and 1740, Captain Laughlin Campbell brought 470 people from Scotland to New York City with the promise of free land upstate New York. The land deal (Argyle Patent, in what is now Washington County) did not go through until 1764. Most of these people, while awaiting their promised land, moved to Orange County (now Rockland) settling near the villages of Tappan, Goshen, and Highlands. Some of my ancestors who were among these Scots, got married and had children there and I've seen references to Kakiate as birthplaces and marriage places. I'm trying to find any info I can that references anything about these immigrants while they lived in this area, whether it be just a book title or something someone might know about it. Thank you in advance, Stephen C. MacDougall

If you will re-check Cole's "History of Rockland County" on page 71 of the Appendix, you will find that a daughter Rachel was born to Abraham Blauvelt and Maria DeKlerck on 26 December 1773 and baptized in Clarkstown Church on 23 January 1774. The witnesses were "Haramanis" Blauvelt and Rachel Blauvelt. The earliest child born to Abraham Blauvelt (son of Abraham Blauvelt and Jannetje DeClark) and his wife Anna Maria Van Huysen (daughter of Harmanus Van Huysen and Sarah Blauvelt) appears to be their son Abraham, baptized 15 December 1776 in the same Clarkstown Church.
