The Superintendent, Thomas Luke Conroy, was WONDERFUL! He gave us a photocopy of a plot map and escorted us to the (unmarked) plot in question. Oak Hill is a large cemetery with a very limited budget. Their records are not backed up offsite, and one fire could destroy a lot of valuable information. They might not have the time or budget to respond to mail or phone requests, but anyhow, the contact information is: Oak Hill Cemetery 140 N. 2. Doug Tallman
    3. Hello Rockland County Rooters -- My name is Doug Tallman, and this message is primarly to introduce myself and to also make sure I'm hooked up to this mailing list properly. I tried joining some time ago and never received a message. I live in Frederick, Md., and I'm very much interested in Rockland County, particularly the area around Nyack. I'm in the process of shoring up my family tree. I believe I'm related to Abraham Abrahams Tallman (b 1786), who was a son of Abraham Teunisse Tallman (b 9 Aug 1756, d 1 Dec 1820). Both of whom lived in and around Nyack. One question ... Is there a trick to getting information out of Oak Hill Cemetery in Nyack? The place is lousy with my relatives, but I hear getting records out of them isn't easy. (Or maybe the fellow who told me that didn't try hard enough.) Thank you. Doug Tallman Frederick, Md.

    1. Re: ROCKLAND COUNTY QUERY [DUXBURY]
    2. Joan Brooks
    3. Hello Duxbury Family, I have checked some records for your Samuel Duxbury in Haverstraw and, unfortunately, found nothing. He does not appear in the 1850 Fed Census, NY, nor the NYS 1855 Census for Haverstraw. I also checked Cole's "History of Rockland County" for his name and couldn't find him. According to Cole, the first Baptist church in Haverstraw was officially started in 1847, and he wasn't the pastor. Since you stated he emigrated to Rockland County, I checked the Naturalization Records for this area and could not find his name as applying for citizenship. Mt. Repose Cemetery in Haverstraw and Mt. Rest Cemetery in Stony Point don't show his name either. Two main funeral homes in the area--Holt and Dutcher--show no one buried by that name. Unfortunately, there seems to be a brick wall here. If you know where he emigrated from, you might be able to find him in passenger ship records. If he came here in 1830, he might have moved elsewhere before the 1850 census. At this moment, I don't have access to the 1830 and 1840 Federal Census, but you could check those. When I get to the library again, I'll check the entire NYS 1830, 1840 and 1850 census indexes for you. Sorry I couldn't be of much help to you. Good luck in your searching. Sincerely, Joan Brooks Stony Point, NY The Duxbury Family wrote: > 11 August 1998 Des Duxbury > duxburyd@iafrica.com > Query: My great-great-grandfather Samuel William Duxbury emigrated to the US > in October 1830 and settled in Haverstraw, Rockland County.
