    1. Four Children die in Church fire
    2. Stan and Ellen Koskinen
    3. Hello, October 1894, in Nyack, NY, the Rev. Ross Taylor and his wife Adah went out for the evening leaving their children at home. The church manse caught fire and four of the children died in the fire. I' m trying to find the children's names and ages and would like to get a copy of the newspaper article. The New City Library and the Nyack Public Library have the Nyack Evening Journal and the Nyack Evening Star on microfilm, but do not make interlibrary loans. Is there someone who knows how I might find a copy of these papers or is there someone in the area who might be willing to look at these microfilms for me. I would be happy to pay for reasonable expenses for copying, parking (?), and mailing. Thanks for any help, anyone can give me. 1. Desperately need help in Nyack
    2. Judy Lassiter
    3. I'm helping a friend with her search for her birth parents. Birth mother was named either Virginia or Betty Lassiter and resided in Nyack, NY, in 1942. At that time she was listed as being 23 years old, born in VA, a retail secretary, and Jewish. On August 29, 1942, this woman gave birth to a baby girl that she gave up for adoption. Recent info indictates that the birth father was a graduate of Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, NJ, and was from a very prominent family. I have found a few alumni of this college from the late 1930s and early 1940s, but none remembers or will admit remembering anything about this situation. There is a possibility that the birth father was living or working in Nyack in late 1941 and 1942. Stevens is an engineering college, so I feel that his employment would be in engineering. Now........how would I go about finding this type company in Nyack during this time frame, and how would I find a man from a prominent family who married a woman named either Virginia or Betty? We have reason to believe that the birth mother and birth father did get married, either before or after the baby was given up for adoption, but probably after. Is this impossible? Two pictures of a woman we believe to be this birth mother are on our website at http://members.aol.com/bamamama/index.htm. If anything at all looks or sounds familiar, please contact me. Thanks in advance, Judy Lassiter

    1. ROCKLAND COUNTY QUERY [GERMAN]
    2. 5 Nov 1998 Carl Strand e-mail: strandeart@aol.com John and Grace GERMAN and family I am searching for information about John I (b ca 1730, perhaps southern Germany) and Grace (maiden name?) GERMAN and their family. I was told that the baptisms of their 2nd and 3rd children, Christopher (b ca 1750) and Jacob (b ca 1760), are listed in a book entitled "The history of Rockland Co.", by Cole, David. If anyone has this book, I would appreciate look-up assistance to verify their mention and to learn of any details. My 4gr-grf John GERMAN, I, was at Fort Edward, Washington Co., NY, for several years prior to 1776, at which time he had 100 acres of land and a good log house. He joined the British forces on Lake Champlain on 4 Nov 1776, and lost all his possessions in 1777 when his wife and children went behind the British lines. John GERMAN I and his entire family resettled in ON, CAN, after the Rev. War. John I and his first wife, Grace, had 5 children: John II (b ca 1750), Christopher I (b ca 1750), Jacob I (b ca 1760), Rebecca (b ca 1770), and Mary (b ca 1776). Grace GERMAN was at Quebec or Old Lorette (near Quebec) in Jan 1778 and at least until 29 Oct 1778, when John I visited her and their 5 children (3 over 10 years old and two under) on leave. Grace "disappeared" between late 1778 and 1784. John I's second wife was Mary RYCKMAN, and their two children were James and Henry. John I is believed by a family historian who researched the family in the 1930s to have been born ca 1730 in southern Germany and immigrated to British North America while young. At least some of John I's immediate descendants were Quakers. Also, family legend is that Mary GERMAN's family was Pennsylvania Dutch. On the other hand, another family history states that John I was born in Albany Co., NY. I believe that John GERMAN I lived in Rockland Co., NY, before he settled in Fort Edward, NY. He may be the same as the Johann Peter GERMAN who arrived in Philadelphia with other Palatines on the ship Ann Galley from Rotterdam via the Orkneys, and who took the oaths 27 Sep 1746. Any help or suggestions would be welcome. Carl Strand 1436 S. Bentley Ave., #6 Los Angeles, CA 90025

    1. Re: Fw: JOHNSON - CREGPOM?
    2. Pat Wardell
    3. Carolyn -- Kakiat Ref Ch baptisms (and marriages) are available in a typescript format on microfilm through the LDS (Mormon Church) Family History Centers. Look in your phone book for an LDS church and call them to find your nearest Family History Center. The public, regardless of religious affiliation, is welcome to use these records -- a wonderful aid for genealogists. Go, and look through their indexes to find the order number for the film; order it (for a minimal fee, usually a few dollars) and when it arrives, you usually have two or three weeks to view it and make copies from it at the Family History Center. You might also look for tombstone records for this church. One record of tombstone insciptions at the churchyard was made in 1947 and is in the following book: Ackerman, Herbert S., and Arthur J. Goff, New York and New Jersey Cemeteries, 1947 (Kakiat Ref Chyd, West New Hempstead, Rockland County, NY). This has recently been republished by Bergen Historic Books, P.O. Box 244, Englewood, NJ 07631, 201-816-0585. I'm quite sure the LDS has microfilm on this as well. I have this book, and I've looked at the Kakiat Church listings -- no entries for your Johnson names, but there are other Johnsons listed. Here's what I have on the Kakiat Church: Also known as Brick Church, another name for The Reformed Church of West New Hempstead, Rockland County, NY. Established in 1774. Address (1995): 220 Brick Church Road, Spring Valley, NY 10977, 914-384-6131. Also called the Kakiat Church. Also, you might consider that Nancy's surname might have been Gregson. The old fashioned handwritten "s" looked very much like a "p" and could be easily misinterpreted by someone unfamiliar with old handwriting and letterforms. Just a thought. I would love to have any further information you have on this family. Parents, siblings, names, dates, places. etc. Many thanks. Pat >Pat - This is the right one!!!!
