    3. Hi Group, I received a note from the secretary at the Tappan Reformed church, Tappan, NY. stating that they are no longer allowed to even open the old books dating back from 1694 to 1831 because the pages are falling apart. They can no longer do look-ups for this time period. They are hoping to have this information read and restored, but that it is written in old Dutch and needs to be translated. My question is has this information been placed in any books ? Besides the " History of Rockland County, NY" by David Cole. Thanks, Donna.

    2. Protzman, RL (Robert)
    3. Donna, Committees of Safety were set up by the Patriot side to provide for controlling the local population and for resisting the British and Loyalist sympathizers. They provide communication with adjoing regions and with the Continental Congress. They were composed of the non-military leaders of the Patriot cause. The Genealogical Society of Rockland County does not sponsor a Revolutionary War WebSite for the County. I don't know of any other such WebSite, but there could be one sponsored by a group interested in the American Revolution, or by a re-enactor's group. Bob Protzmann

In the "Explanatory Statement" at the beginning of Cole's "History of Rockland County New York" (1884), he says: "There are but four Rockland county churches older than the present [19th] century. These are: 1. The Reformed Church of Tappan, organized October 24th 1694, with which must be connected (of course as to records only) the irregular congregation in existence from 1767 to1778. 2. The Reformed Church of Clarkstown, organized December (?) 1749. 3. The English Presbyterian Church of Kakiat or West New Hempstead, started before 1754; date of organization unknown. 4. The Reformed Church of Kakiat, or West New Hempstead ("Brick Church"), organized December 4th 1774. "Of these four churches, the third has no records back of 1800. Each of the others has its baptisms without a break form the date of organization..." You will see all four of these churches in the list at http://www.rootsweb.com/~nyrockla/GSRC/rcchurches.htm --Bruce (Bruce Hamilton, Redondo Beach, CA) bhami@netcom.com http://home.earthlink.net/~bhami/

    3. Dear Friends, Does anyone know which church would have served the families of New Hempstead, in 1751?. I am seeking the names of the parents of William N. Conklin, and am hoping that some church may have his bptm. record..I have looked at the wonderful listing of churches in Rockland County, but saw none of New Hempstead. During the Rev. War, Gen'l Anthony Wayne stayed with Wm's mother, before and after the battle of Stoney Point I have not been able to find a written record of this, which might include Mrs. Conklin's full name.My information comes from Wm's application for a Rev. War pension. Does anyone know where I might find Gen'l Wayne's papers that might give us this information?. Congratulations on the great job you are all doing!. 3. John, Back from vacation. You may have already received this from Joan. I have been working with cemetery records in order to update information on our GSRC WebSite. I have come across a little book in the New City Library, entitled, "A Collection of Cemetery Stone Recordings Within the Harriman Bear Mountain Interstate Park System and the Cemetery of St. John's In the Wilderness, Rockland County, New York, compiled by Thomas and Ethel Helms, (1982), indexed by Marjorie Smeltzer Stevenot (1991). There are no recorded Stricklands in the index, except for St. John's: Eliza 1852-1914 George Co A. 86 NY Inf. Georgy 12-20-1871 - 3-8-1888 Jacob 12-25-1853 - 7-3-1909 Joel 1852-1889 Ruth It appears that Joel and Eliza are on one stone, and the others on a second stone. Sorry, there is no John. Hopefully, this will help, somewhat. Part II. I found some more. I was also talking to Joan Brooks, so you may have this, but here is your John: John Strickland, d. May 22, 1863, h/o Ruth (Youmans) Strickland. Bur. Lake Welch # 4, Rockhouse Mt./John R. Jones Cemetery. Bob Protzmann

    3. This morning I downloaded my email and found that more than 90% of the messages had dates indicating they were sent sometime during the first two decades of this century, about 80 or 90 years ago. I'd like to think that I tapped into a time machine and was seeing real corrpespondence from that era, but wisdom tells me otherwise. I suspect that those of you on DOS and Windows PC's better take a look at the date function in your operating system or your chronological files will go to hell in a handbasket very quickly. Or you can replace that Windows clunker with a real computer, a Macintosh, which can tell time well into the next century without so much as a hiccup :-) Kelvin Kean Elverson, Pennsylvania US
