Main St. in Spring Valley when he died in Nov. of 1968. Any info on him or his family would be appreciated. I believe he was a member of a theatrical family called the Joseph C. Hansen Company and they had a workshop in NYC and made draperies, etc. for the Harris Theatre and Hans was an accomplished carpenter. He also had a brother named Max. I'm looking for information, sources, ideas in researching Jonathan Youmans who lived in Clarkstown, and was born in 1763 (although I've seen other dates) and is I am presuming the son of Jonathan Yeomans (1739-1773). JH Greener has Jonathan's son Jonathan marrying Mary Eskill and moving to Monmouth, NJ. Now I'm aware there was a Jonathan Youmans living in NJ around the same period, although, I've not been able to find him in the censuses. But I have Census records showing "a" Jonathan Youmans living in Haverstraw/Clarkstown from 1790 to at least 1840. He filed a RW Pension request which was denied, for him not having the right kind of service. I also currently have this Jonathan as my direct ancestor. Greener is known to use "guesses" on where to place people, and is documented, by Grant S. Youmans, to have screwed up the Youman's tree by putting some of Samuel Youmans' (of Westchester) siblings as Samuels' children in a lineage Greener wrote. I have information of a Jonathon Youmans marrying Elisabeth DeGrauw in 1786 at Clarkstown DRC (or at which time it was part of Tappan's records), although this list Hempstead as a residence and not Clarkstown or Haverstraw. I also have a later marriage for a widower Jonathan Youmans in 1808 to Mary (Margaretta) Fuischer, still in Hempstead. Only, there is no such head of household person in Hempstead in the 1790 or 1800 Census. The only Jonathan Youmans, in those years, is in Clarkstown. Any online newspapers, or other source, that would cover Clarkstown in the 1780s-1850? I'm not looking for books, but primary or secondary sources (newspapers, church transcriptions, wills, etc). I've exhausted, I think, the Dutchdoor site for this person. Unfortunately, I do not know what Grant Youmans sources were. Thanks for reading this post, Brian

The Genealogical Society of Bergen County NJ (GSBC) is sponsoring a one-day seminar entitled "Your Immigrant Ancestors: How to Find Them and How They Lived." It will be held at the Moses Center at Bergen Community College on Saturday April 6 from 9AM to 3PM. The featured speaker will be Lisa Alzo. An avid genealogist for 22 years, Lisa currently teaches online genealogy courses for Family Tree University and the National Institute for Genealogical Studies. She is the recipient of the 2002 Mary Zirin Prize given by the Association for Women in Slavic Studies to recognize the achievements of independent scholars. Lisa is a frequently invited speaker at national conferences and genealogical and historical societies, has published numerous articles in genealogical publications, and has written nine books on genealogical topics. The topics to be discussed are: - Tracing Your Immigrant Ancestors. This talk will show tips and tricks for locating and searching passenger lists and other key immigration documents both on and offline to help trace your roots. - Immigrant Cluster Communities. Exploring "cluster genealogy" - the process of researching relatives, friends and neighbors who lived near an ancestor - can often break down brick walls in the search for individual family lines and help place our ancestors' lives in historical context. - Silent Voices: Finding Your Female Ancestors. This session will demonstrate effective ways to discover your female ancestors and how to document the important roles their lives played in culture and society. - Demystifying Eastern European Research. Eastern European research involves special challenges caused by border changes, language differences, political considerations, and complex surnames which complicate the research process. The techniques discussed can be applied in most other countries. Complete details and registration information is on our website at www.njgsbc.org.

Within the Rockland Co section, the deeds on line only go up to 1890. The deed I'm interesed in is listed in the Grantor Index as being land in Suffern sold by William Bevans & wife Hannah to Benjamin J. Jones on 28 Sep 1894. The deed is found in Liber 176, Page 466 William & Hannah don't appear on the 1892 census so I thought they had died sometime between the 1880 census & the 1892 census. However, if they are selling land in 1894, they must still have been alive. Nothing in the Grantor Index indicates that they were deceased & that this land was being sold by the heirs. None of William & Hannah's male children are listed in the Grantor Index with respect to this transaction and I also checked the Grantor Index under the married names of their daughters & found nothing. I need to know just what this deed says with respect to the parties selling - Grantors. Is it really William & Hannah making the sale? Or is it heirs of William & Hannah doing the selling & who were the heirs named? I'd do it myself but I live several hours away from Rockland Co. And I tried an on line search at the Co Clerk's site but apparently the records in the on line database don't go back that far. Can someone who's going into the county offices where these records are kept look at this deed for me & let me know what it says? Thanks.
