    2. Debbi Gould
    3. I'm attempting to locate a birth certificate and more information regarding a Carlton Robert Mac Elroy born in Hillburn NY in 1906-1907. I contacted the NY Vital records, they show no such person. What local governmental ageny might have such a record? Does anyone know of these MAC ELROYS ???? Debbi Gould in Santa Barbara, CA

    3. Jackie and Michelle, These are probably the same families. The name was spelled and prounounced many ways - what did the English and Dutch know about French names. The are two volumes of the DEMAREST geneaolgy in the New City Library, Rockland co, NY. For the complete reference, see the Webpages for the Genealogical Society of Rockland County and follow the links to Genealogies in the New City Library. http://www/~nyrockla/GSRC/ Bob Protzmann > -----Original Message----- > From: Michelle Stone [SMTP:71172.2370@compuserve.com] > Sent: Friday, May 07, 1999 9:45 AM > To: NYROCKLA-L@rootsweb.com > Subject: Re: [NYROCKLA-L] 1910 ce > > >>Michelle... I have Demarest's (pronounced Demaray) from the Nyack/Tappan area: Margaret Elizabeth Haring b. 01/31/1851, wife of James Abraham Hasbrouck... dau. of Fredericus and Margaret Demarest. Could there be a connection? Jackie bunny-jo@webtv.net<< Hi, Jackie, I don't know if there's a connection between your Demarests and my DEMAREs. But I'm intrigued to learn that your Demarest surname is pronounced "Demaray". I had seen a lot of Demarests in Nyack indexes and the cemetery there I visited, but hadn't before considered them to be related.... My PETER DEMARE was a wheelwright in Savannah, GA, 40 years old, in the 1860 census. He was a German immigrant born in Nassau, Germany, married to SOPHIA (age 25) born in Hanover, Germany, the census says. These names match the names of parents (Peter Demare and Sophia Landsmann) on their daughter, Margaret Demare Stone's death certificate. They had children Catherine and Henry in Savannah, and Margaret was born there circa 1864. After the Civil War they moved to Nyack, I was told. Margaret and her sister, "Kate Demarie" are buried in Massachusetts. The marriage of Peter and Sophia is listed as "Peter Demery and Sophia Landman" - so it is hard to tell just how the surname was pronounced. If your Demarests in Nyack were from Germany, perhaps ours are related. I did find a Peter Demare coming into New York from Havre in 1855 on the S.S. H.A. Miller, a ship filled with German farmers--he was listed as a U.S. citizen age 38. In the Savannah records I found that a Peter Demere was naturalized May 1856. But if the DEMARE surname is pronounced Demeray, perhaps his family was originally from France, before Germany. I throw out this mess of details because that's all I have at the moment; perhaps something here will ring a bell with you. In the meantime, would I be too forward if I asked if anyone here has access to the book and willingness to lookup the DEMARE/DEMERE/DEMARIE/DEMEREY family (esp. PETER, SOPHIA, KATE/CATHERINE and HENRY) for me? I am planning to visit the Georgia Dept. of Archives and History on Saturday and would be happy to do a lookup swap. 3. Hi, everyone, I am a new subscriber to this list. I am researching my STONE and DEMARE ancestors who had ties to Nyack, NY. My grandfather, PHILIP NELSON STONE was supposedly born in Nyack in 1886, but I have been unable to scare up any vital records proof for him, either from Albany or the local jurisdiction. Have also checked there (by mail requests) for proof of his parents' marriage (EDWIN B. STONE and MARGARET DEMARE) circa 1885 and similarly turned up nothing. This has been frustrating. The DEMAREs (Margaret's parents, PETER and SOPHIA) were German immigrants who earlier settled in Savannah, GA and then, I was told, moved to Nyack after the Civil War. Of course I can't find them there in any U.S. census indexes! Then when I went to comb through the actual 1910 U.S. census for Nyack, neither I nor the librarians could even find NYACK on the rolls! (We found parts of Rockland Co., but no Nyack.) I am sure someone on the list can tell me exactly on what roll of microfilm the 1910 U.S. census for the city of Nyack is. Then I will go and look through the whole town for any DEMAREs. (By 1910, my STONEs had gone back to Massachusetts.) Thanks in advance for any help. 3. I have a torn and tattered copy of my 2x great grandmother Dorcas JOHNSON LAKE's obituary. I do not know what newspaper it came from and would appreciate help in find a complete copy. "The funeral of the late Mrs. Dorcas LAKE, the mother of D R LAKE and Mrs. Ezra MEAD of the village, took place from her late residence in Rockland Street, on Wednesday afternoon. She was respected and loved by everyone." This funeral took place on January 31st, 1881. Although the obit does not mention them she also had two other sons. Cortland JOHNSON LAKE of Buffalo, Erie County, NY. and my great grandfather John H. Lake of Susquehanna County, PA. at the time of her funeral John was living in Binghamton, Broome County, NY. I would like to know if anyone could tell me the names of the existing newspapers at that time? Also would anyone know how I would go about finding if her house still exists? I live in Attica, Wyoming County, NY and will be making a trip to Rockland County some time in the next year. For this reason I am trying to research as much as I can before going there. Thanks for any assistance, Sincerely, Fran (LAKE) KING
