Hello Can anyone out there tell me where Death Certificates for Harlem Valley Psychiatric Center (formerly known as "Wingdale" for its location at Wingdale, New York) might be filed? Hi, I'm new to the list -- my interest is not primarily genealogical.I am researching the early history of Rockland Psychiatric Center. We are interested in the patients' lives, as well as their deaths (i.e., burial grounds, death certificates, etc.) We are also interested in any documentation related to the hospital, including newspaper stories, photographs, movies, and even memorabilia. If there is a history of mental illness in someone's family out there, and you are willing to share that story, you can contact me off-list, by fax, or phone, or plain old letter. Thanks in advance. Walt, They have posted the wrong telephone number. The area code is 914, NOT 917. I have not personally gotten information from Oak Hill, but have met the manager and he is very co-operative. He is working with members of the Genealogocical Society of Rockland County to transcribe and index cemetery records. Good luck. Let us know how it works out . After the death of Gilbert JOHNSON c 1829, in Rockland County, his wife Jane (nee SMITH) and his descendents split all his acreage into many small pieces. After much hair tearing and teeth grinding, I have finally made a map of the land and am not much better off than when I started. "The old farm" portion of his land appears to be in the town of Ramapo, formerly in Hempstead, 'part of the old Kakiat patent.' The plat is long and skinny, about eight times longer than it is wide, running generally northwest to southeast, containing about 231 acres. The only metes and bounds given are the land of James SHERWOOD on the south, a road and the land of John J. FORSHEE on the east, the 'new road to the mountain' on the north, and a two piles of rocks at the base of a ledge at the foot of the mountain on the west. There is a cider mill on the north east corner of the property where the two roads intersect. Some of this land was sold to Walter and Stephen JOHNSON (descendents of the Gilbert JOHNSON who married Phoebe GURNEE) and some to the PIERSONS. Can anyone tell me where this property is currently located?
Hi List: I just joined the list and I need some help finding my FORSHAY line. I am trying to trace back from my Grandfather Frank FORSHAY b. 27 Oct 1882 in Upper Saddle River, NJ. He married Edna MACKEY. Franks father was William O. FORSHEE b. 12 April 1858, he married Jane Bush. William's father was Cornelius FORSHEE b. 18 March 1835 in Ramapo. Here is my problem. My mother says that Cornelius should have come from Canada. But I find records where he was born in Ramapo, NY. I can go back 2 more generations and according to the records all where born in the states. Some where back there some one came from France through Canada, but I can't find who it was so far. Can anybody out there give me some help on this problem? On May 3 I sent a letter to the Oak Hill Cemetery, Nyack to obtain information about 8 graves in one plot there. I have received no response and when I call the number listed on the Rockland County USGENWEB page (917-358-0012) I get three quick tones and then a fast busy (an answering machine?). Has anyone had any experience getting information from Oak Hill and if so what is the secret? Walt Jones Spolane WA
Still looking for any help with FAGAN from Stony Point. Terrence Fagan died between 1883 and 1892 Elizabeth Hayden died between 1900 and 1910 These are my gr gr grandparents. Would like to establish a year of death on them. I have looked through Rockland County available film through my local LDS Library and can find no death indexes to try to find them. Terrence J. Fagan married Catherine C. Reilly(?) around 1899-1900. This is the son of the above. He is last listed on the 1910 census living on Main Street. I have looked for a marriage index through the LDS and have only located one for marriages from 1908 up. Anne Fagan daughter of Terrence and Elizabeth last listed on the 1920 census on River Street in Stony Point. Apparently never married. Would like to try to establish a death year on her also. My FAGAN's came hear in 1866 and I have found them on every census year through 1920 in Stony Point. Some of their children moved to Connecticut and I have been able to trace them. Thanks so much for any help from someone in the area. Debbie - South Carolina

Bob Protzmann has re-edited and I have reformatted the Rockland Co. church and cemetery pages at http://www.rootsweb.com/~nyrockla/GSRC/rcchurches.htm and http://www.rootsweb.com/~nyrockla/GSRC/rccem.htm , respectively. There is a substantial amount of added material. Check it out! Thanks, Bob! --Bruce (Bruce Hamilton, Redondo Beach, CA) bhami@netcom.com http://home.earthlink.net/~bhami/
I bought a box of old photos at a garage sale. Among them are two 9X13" prints of a group of people dressed in sport jackets with the #15 on the breast pocket. It looks like a reunion. Were they from the class of 1915? Well dressed, prosperous looking people.. The same background is on both pictures. Different years. An embossed seal of the photographer is on the prints. On an old list of Rockland County Abandoned Cemeteries done by the WPA is listed #103, Samuel Wiant Burial Ground on Washburn's Lane, Stony Point. The burial ground is no longer there, since the area is filled with houses, most of which were probably built in the 1950's or early '60's. Would anyone know who was buried there and where they were reinterred? Joan Brooks 157 Washburn Lane Stony Point, NY 10980
Sally, I am collecting WALDRON family information for the Genealogical Society of Rockland County. I have some information on the Rockland branches. I also have the data on the origins of the American family in Holland and back to England. I have a copy of the WALDRON Chapter from Riker's History of Harlem, which lists the early generations of Ny and some of those who moved on, west and north. Can you give me specifics on what you know about your early Rockland WALDRONS? I will do a look-up for you. There are a number of CONKLIN researchers among the membership of the Genealogical Society of Rockland County. If you have Web access, check our WebPages at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~Nyrockla/GSRC/ click on the link to the SURNAME Index and find CONKLIN, then check the membership l;ist for addresses of those doing CONKLIN research. BTW, I also have some NYC Walton information. Bob Protzmann

Hi Everyone! Does anyone have any history books in Rockland Co. or Orange Co. that could possibly check on a surname MANN for me? I have located my Mann family in NJ in 1880 but prior to that they were from NY State. I am looking for Samuel Mann who married Rachel DeGroat (B. 1824); they had 11 children and I can only find three of them - John (b. 1854), Manning (b. 1850) and Amsey or Anguy who married Maria (unknown surname). Any help I sure would appreciate. Many thanks, Chris
