They various cemeteries that are listed can be seen on our WebSite at <http://www.rootsweb.com/~nyrockla/GSRC/> I believe that the Oak Hill listings are only partial, but probably include the oldest graves. We, at GSRC, are working with the caretaker at Oak Hill to put together a complete listing of all graves, from cemetery records. Bob

    3. Marianne, I don't have a lot about the CONKLINS, but if they were from the Palisades area, I have some, as this group inter-married with my lines. As far as BABCOCKs are concerned, I have little or none. Do you have InterNet access? If so, check out the WebPages of the Genealogical Society of Rockland County at http://www.rootsweb.com/GSRC/. There you will find our SURNAME Index. Look for BABCOCKs and CONKLINs, then check out the members' addresses for those searching those names. If you think you have family around Palisades, NY, let me know the names and I'll see what I can come up with. Bob

    2. Raymond Merigold
    3. I am looking for information on the Merigold (Marigold) family in Orange County. I have visited the Orange County Genealogical Society and various libraries in the county. This is what I have. * Mr. Marigold worked on the Great Chain at Sterling Iron Works. * Lawrence Marygold in 1790 & 1800 census in Warwick Town. * Samuel Merigold married in the Brick Church in W. New Hempstead in 1808 * Lawrence & Samuel Merrygold both in 1820 census in Monroe * Samuel Merigold is buried in the Ramapo Works Cemetery, died in 1840 * Lawrence Merigold died at the Orange County Poor Farm in 1844 at age 90 * The rest of my family moved to Taunton, MA in 1850. Samuel Merigold was my GGG Grandfather. Questions: Was Lawrence, Samuel's father? Did Samuel have any brothers or sisters? Where was he born? Which Merigold worked on the Great Chain? Were there other Merigold's that worked at the Iron Works? Any Information you have about the Merigold family is be greatly appreciated. Thank You for your help, Ray Merigold

MONOOSE. Mortgage #532. John SPRINGSTEEN of New Hempstead, yeoman, to Augustus James Frederick Prevost of NY City, 4 Aug 1796. 107 acres in the eastern end of Lot #9 in the west range of lots in the North Moiety of the Kakiat Patent. Bounds: on the north by Lot#10 the land of Gilbert JOHNSON, on the east by the public road, on the south by Lot#8 the land of Johannes FISHURE (FORSHAY?) and on the west by Gilbert COOPER's land in Lot #9. (These lots are included on the map found on the inside covers of Cole's History of Rockland County.) My question is - How did Gilbert JOHNSON get Lot #10 which Mary WALTON Sr purchased in 1765? By 1769, Gilbert is listed as the owner, but there I can find no deed, will or mortgage to show how the transfer was made. Will someone more familar with Rockland County help me with this?

    1. [NYROCKLA-L] Bergen County Historical Society Library
    2. Though you would be interested in this situation. Ree Hopper From: Bob Griffin <bhb@cybernex.net> To: nj history bulletin board <nj_history@email.rutgers.edu> Date: Wednesday, June 30, 1999 5:22 PM Subject: Bergen Co. HIstorical Society Library Collection Anyone interested in using the collection had better do so this summer, as it will definitely be moved and/or stored after August 1999. Many of you have read or heard in recent weeks that the Bergen Co. Historical Society's priceless book and clippings files collection will shortly be moved from its long time home at the Johnson Public Library in Hackensack.Sadly, this is true. For the past several years, we've been searching for another home. In October 1997, we were told by the Johnson P.L. Board of Trustees that we had 2 years to find a new home. Our situation is difficult because, as an all volunteer, non-profit organization, we've enjoyed the Johnson P.L. space at no cost to the Society, and our very modest budget does not provide for any excess funds to be used for rent. Likewise, while a few of our volunteers help patrons a couple of days a week, we really rely on the professional, salaried staff at the library to service the collection. Furthermore, it would not be sufficient for us merely to find an empty building, as there are significant safety and environmental concerns, the need for access during usual "library hours," and so forth. Therefore, we have concentrated our search on other possible library facilities, either public or academic. As you may be aware, today libraries everywhere are faced with severe space and financial difficulties. We have come face to face with this reality in our own search efforts. In our county-wide appeal (through the Bergen County Cooperative Library System of approx. 66 member libraries), only Rutherford P.L. and Mahwah P.L. admitted to any possible free space. Once it was checked out, the Rutherford space proved to be inadequate. At Mahwah, after some consideration, The Library Board elected NOT to grant us space in their new building. Likewise, after 6 months negotiating with Bergen Community College, we finally concluded there was simply no space at their campus in Paramus in which to house the collection, at this time. Two towns, Mahwah and Ridgewood, have vacant, old library buildings. The Mahwah Mayor and Council turned down the proposal made by the Township Administrator, Bob Anderson, to grant us space in the old Winter Library building in Mahwah. In Ridgewood, the old Pease building would be ideal space and would provide a very convenient, central location in the county. We have made a proposal to a special Committee that is investigating alternative uses for the building, and we are preparing a revised joint proposal with the Ridgewood Arts Council for the same space. If either proposal were accepted, however, we would probably not have access to the building for at least 2 to 3 years. Bergen County Executive, Pat Schuber, put us in touch with the president of Felician College, Sister Teresa Martin. Felician College is a small, Catholic college with its main campus in Lodi. Recently, they purchased the old Fairleigh Dickinson Univ. Campus property in Rutherford, and they plan to move some of their classes there. Our on-going discussions with Felician appear to be our best hope at the moment. We've had contact with a member of the history department faculty, and he is very eager to see us come to Lodi. I will be meeting with the director of the library and the vice president of administration tomorrow (7/1/99). Just today, I was also in touch with the library director at Ramapo College in Mahwah. She indicated that Ramapo was about to undertake an expansion program, and she was willing to investigate with the architect whether we might find room in their new facility. So, discussions are continuing there, as well. Meanwhile, we've been given a brief reprieve from the Johnson P.L board of trustees. Our June 30th (today) deadline has been extended to the end of August. At that time, we will either put the collection into storage at Felician College (assuming we would eventually move there, sometime in January '00), or into storage in a County office building in Hackensack. Either way, AFTER AUGUST 31, 1999, THE COLLECTION WILL NOT BE AVAILABLE FOR AT LEAST 4 TO 6 MONTHS. Our long term goal is to unite the Johnson P.L. collection (which comprises about 1/3 of our total collection) with the other manuscripts, maps, atlases, photographs, bibles, newspapers, and other archive materials that are currently in storage in our HQ in River Edge. To that end, there are several options that might be available. First, of course, is the possibility of having our own facility at Historic New Bridge Landing (HNBL) in River Edge. We are working with the HNBL State Park Commission to see a fully developed historic park at New Bridge, and it would include a new library and archive facility. Also, we have discussed the possibility of a similar facility at the newly reclaimed Hackensack Water Company property in Oradell, also planning to become a historic and cultural resource center. Bergen Community College was sincerely interested in the collection, and eventually hopes to have enough room to consider housing the larger collection there. The same is true at the Pease library building in Ridgewood. In every case, we're talking about a minimum of 5 years before any of these possibilities are likely to pan out. We will continue to pursue each of them until we come up with the best solution. Meanwhile, anyone interested in using the collection had better do so this summer, as it will definitely be moved and/or stored after August 1999. I hope this explanation of our situation is helpful. 3. Back in November, on this topic I suggested to the list: read the three-part article "The Foshay Family of Philipse Manor" by Glenna See Hill, NY Genealogical and Biographical Record, Apr-Jul-Oct 1987, vol.118 no.2-3-4. That article doesn't go much beyond people born in the 1790s. My Forshee line looks like: Pierre FOSHAY b.1683 France m. Abigail DUPUY John FOSHAY c.25 Mar 1706 d.1782/1783 m. Catherine WALDRON John FORSHEE b.15 Jan 1733 d.21 Apr 1818 m.1759 Magdalena BANTA Abraham FORSHEE b.26 Jun 1761 d.1845 m.1790 Elizabeth DE BAUN Ellen FORSHEE b. 29 Dec 1807 d.1903 m.Abraham DOREMUS I have a privately-published book (one of Pat Wardell's delightful hand-me-downs, I think) "Genealogy of the De Baun Family" by William H. Wallace, Oceanside, NY 1974, p.42 which lists the following children for Abraham Forseur and Elizabeth DeBaun. Presumably the second "Magdalena" is my "Ellen"?. I'd be interested in any pointers to other references on this. The book is one of these incredible, vast listings of names and dates with NO references whatsoever! and so is only of suggestive value. 163 Magdalena, b. 3 Feb 1787, died young 164 Jacob b. 11 Sep 1788, bap. 28 Sep 1788 Paramus 165 Anna bap. 10 Jan 1790, died young 166 John b. 18 Sep 1792 167 Abram b. 25 Sep 1794 168 Anna b. 27 Jun 1798 169 Peter b. 25 Jan 1805 170 Magdalena b. 24 Dec 1807 --Bruce (Bruce Hamilton, Redondo Beach, CA) bhami@netcom.com http://home.earthlink.net/~bhami/

    3. Bill, I noticed your post on the NYROCKLA List. I have one line of FORSHAYs that married into my CHAMPENOIS family. This was on the Manor of Philipsburgh, in Westchester County, NY, pre-American Revolution. It is my understanding that the ROCKLAND lines originated with the family in WESTCHESTER Co. This family came from FRANCE, possibly via the Netherlands, during the early Colonial period. I have not done much with this branch of the tree. I believe that there is a chapter on FORSHAY in Mackensie's manuscript, "Families of Philipsburgh Manor". The only copies that I know of are in the Westchester Historical Society Collection, at the Westchester County Archives, and at the New York Public Library. Bob Protzmann

    3. Dear list members, Is there an active Order of the Eastern Star chapter in the Spring Valley area? I need to check for records on Mary Jane (Polly) BENNETT GILLIS born 1860 and her daughter Florence GILLIS DUVALL born c1900. They are my husband's grandmother and aunt. Also, is there an active Mason Chapter in the Spring Valley area? I need to check on my husband's grandfather William Gillis born 1862. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
