    1. [NYROCKLA] GRASS family in Stony Point 1850
    2. Michelle Stone
    3. Hi, Kelley, I can't offer help about Stony Point, but I did recently discover a way you may find your ancestors' immigration information during those unindexed years. The website http://genweb.net/~gen-cds/cdlist.html is a site where volunteers will look up names on cds of indexed information for you. Go to the webpage, click on the link called "On-Line Family Finder Index," input your ancestor's name, and if a CD number comes up, you can then request one of the volunteers with that CD to look up the citation for you. I found some ancestors' immigrations there that I have never before been able to locate. Hope the same for you. My apologies to the list if this is off-topic, but it is such a good resource, thought some other listers here might want to know, too. Michelle Stone in Marietta, GA 71172.2370@compuserve.com Message text written by INTERNET:NYROCKLA-L@rootsweb.com >I am looking for the Peter Grass family that came to the US between Nov 1848 and Nov 1849. (No indexes immigration lists). I have looked for passenger lists, but there are hundreds of films for this time period. I think they may have settled for a short period of time in Stony Point. They were wine makers in Germany, immigrated to NY, then left for California and bought property there in 1855/56. They named their vineyard in California, Stony Point Vineyard and there is a Stony Point road which lead to their property. Peter Grass died before getting to California, so I thought he might be buried in Stony Point. Is there any obituaries or death indexes for this area? Or many be a cemetery index dating to that period? Also, I have been told that this part of New York looks very like the Rhine area of Germany. Can someone confirm that? §(~¿~ )§ Kelley Kishpaugh Cottonwood, AZ scubado@verdenet.com <

    1. [NYROCKLA] RE: Local Newspapers
    2. Hi List, I have asked this question before and had a reply, however, I lost or deleted by accident the reply. My FAGAN family lived in the Stony Point - Grassy Point area from around 1880-1920 and probably longer. I would like to do inter library loans for the local newspaper of that time to try to find obituaries. Can anyone tell me the name of the newspaper and which library has it on microfilm so I could contact them to inquire about inter library loans. Thanks for any help. Debbie - South Carolina

    1. [NYROCKLA] Nathan JONES, b. 1792 Rensselaer County NY, m. Esther BABCOCK
    2. Carol Martin
    3. Hello, Does anyone know the following? I am looking for any clues regarding the family of: Nathan JONES, b. 1792 Rensselaer County NY, m. Esther BABCOCK, d. 3 Mar 1863 Oneida County NY. Nathan and Esther had at least one child, Betsey Emeline JONES (who married and divorced Joseph WELLS of Augusta, Oneida County NY). Esther's BABCOCK line is of the BABCOCKs of Westerly RI, and I strongly suspect that Nathan's is, too, as there was a Nathan JONES in Westerly RI the right age to be Nathan's father (or grandfather?). I just cannot make the connection. Can anyone help? Thank you, Carol Martin carolmorgain@earthlink.net

    1. Re: [NYROCKLA] Fw: [NYROCKLA-L] Bompey's Hook - where is it?
    2. Kelvin L. Kean
    3. For any who are interested, I located Bombey's Hook for Karen Izzo who asked the original question and answered her privately. It's a promontory in the Palisades about two mile north of the present day Alpine Boat Basin and at 520 feet above the Hudson is one of the highest points, if not the highest point, of the southern section of Palisades overlooking the Hudson. And, of course, it lies within Bergen County, New Jersey. I located it on one of a number of hiking maps I have of the Palisades and the Hudson Highland region, all of which include many place names and named features that can't be found on conventional road maps or even the USGS quadrangles. And for what it's worth, the spelling on my maps is Bombay Hook omitting any possessive. Kelvin Kean Elverson, Pennsylvania

    3. I looked for Bompey's Hook on the USGS on-line gazetyeer and found no entry. I also cannot find any such place on my maps. I suspect the name is now archaic with either the location having disappeared as a name altogether or having been replaced by something more modern. Kelvin Kean Elverson, Pennsylvania

    2. Hi, I would appreciate anything anyone can add to the following line. (Especailly information on a Mary Odell.) Please excuse the date and place descrepancies. Some of this information was pulled from Civil War pension records, some from death certificates, obituaries and grave markers. The Civil War pension records consisted of forms filled out at different times with the dates and places changing each time. James C. 3. Carolyn, There are copies of many of the manuscripts in the BUDKE Collection, in the New City, Rockland Co, NY Library. They are mostly copies of typescripts. I don't think that copies are available. It has been impossible for the New City Library to obtain copies of some of the volumes from the New York Public Library, which is the owner of the orignals, purchased from BUDKE (or his estate). Jan shows up in the church register of the Old Dutch Church (the Manor Church, Sleepy Hollow) in 1697. I can send you a copy of the article, if you want it. Bob

    1. Re: [NYROCKLA-L] Article by David M. Riker
    2. Hi, like Donna I'm struggling to make sense of what Riker has written. Frankly, I think he' has mixed up two different men named PETER BUSH. PETER BUSH, son of HENRY BUSH and RACHEL DEGRAW of Rockland Co, married two sisters, MARY SMITH and when she died in 1816, ABIGAIL SMITH. With these 2 wives, he had my great grandmother, ARMINDA BUSH and a bunch of other children who I will list if anyone is interested. Are there any SMITH researchers out there who can add to this? Sandy
