I was wondering if anyone has visited the Spring Valley library for info. If so, is it in a safe area? were there city directories from the 30's? In 1798, Rockland County was formed from Orange County. French's 1860 Gazetteer of New York states that the town of Monroe was formed from the town of Cornwall, March 23, 1799 as "Cheesecocks". Its name was changed to Southfield April 3, 1801 and to Monroe April 6, 1808. A part of Chester was taken off in 1845. It lies mostly among the Hudson Highlands and Ramapo Mtns. It may have included at the time the town of Tuxedo. A book identified "the gore" as lying in an area that we now know as Jennings Hollow, right on the NY and NJ State almost midway between ringwood Manor and the site of the Long Pond Iron Works. My ancestors lived in the area between 1785 to the early 1800's. My problem is I am attempting to find any Cemetery Records that are available and/or a list of any church's/traveling ministers that I can referance and possible find any records available during this time frame. Any help or suggestions will be greatly appreciated. David W. Wyble Sr.
---------- From: Ann Langdon Sent: Tuesday, December 28, 1999 2:01 PM To: 'ROCKLA-L@rootsweb.com' Subject: Sandyfield Calls I am seeking the parents of Jacob Call. Jacob or his parents once lived in the area of the Sandyfield school near what is now Lake Welch. I would appreciate hearing from any Call descendents who lived in (or know of) Sandyfield who might be able to identify the various Call families from the area. Jacob Call was born around 1827 and died in the early 1900's. He married Sarah McKenzie. His children included Richard, Wallace, William, Sarah, Ann and Edith. I am told that his granddaughter, Edith Lane lived in Sandyfield with her mother for a brief period, possibly after her father's death in 1910. Her mother was Edith Call Lane.
Hi List, Saw the postings about certificates in NY. I sent for a death record and marriage record in June also. Emailed them about two weeks ago and they told me they were just beginning to process the first of June's requests. The only one birth record I have ordered had all info on it that I needed. It was from 1883. Had parents names on it. Debbie - South Carolina

Bill wrote pointing out that these two early men, Jan and Pieter Forshay [and surname spelling variations], were producing children at the same time and could not be father and son. Sorry for the goof. I think he's correct. I seems to me, they might have been closely related though, perhaps brothers or cousins, because of proximity and of baptismal witness information. For instance, who is Joseph Escott, married to Margrietje [Aertse?], who witnessed baptisms of children of both Jan and Pieter? I haven't looked at the Family Tree Maker information, but the dates I posted earlier were taken directly from the church records, from both the Tarrytown Ref Ch (Sleepy Hollow) and the New Amsterdam/NYC Ref Ch. It takes five to six months to receive Birth and Death Certificates from NY. I emailed them last year after waiting four months for death certificates. They told me they have about 600 request a month. Can't tell you anything about the information on Birth Certificates..I sent for my father's but apparently over the years his first and middle names became reversed and they could not find one for the way I made my request. Death Certificates have quite a bit of information. How they died....parent's names...where they were born, age at death.....how long they lived in a particular area and some more. Good luck with your searches! Carol Gilbertce@msn.com

My father ordered a copy of his birth certificate from the State of NY. It came back with only his name and date of birth, place of birth. There was no information about his parents. Is this the standard procedure for NY?

Hi List: I have been tracing my family back and have run into a problem. I traced Jean FORSHAY born abt 1674 in France. Jean married Eva Matthyse in 1696. I traced Pierre FORSHAY born abt 1683 in France. Pierre married Abigail DePew in 1704. Both came to the states around 1695 and both settled in Philipsburgh, NY around 1697. David, I have checked the map and listing of Patentees on p. 16, History of Orange County, Ruttenber and Clark. I'm afraid that your Marten does not show up. The map only goes down to Poloplopen Creek, which is at the current border of Orange Co with Rockland County (at the present Bear Mountain Bridge). I checked Cole's "History of Rockland County", and found only one note for Joshua Marten, along with Susan Marten, he was in the class of the Palisades Methodist Episcopal Church (1820). The is no listing for Waible/Wible/Wyble in Cole's. Cole's does not have a good map of Rockland County for that time period, but I would have to say that the MARTENS must have lived near Piermont.
