I also have a Ver Veelan (Ver Valen,Valin) in my ancestry back to before the Revolutionary War. In Haverstraw I found an ancester Thomas Mackeyb. l805 who is my ancester and who came from Marlboro, through Sugar Loaf,or Warwick ,Orange County and whose death certificate shows father asGeorge. There was one in Milton but the other was a Jurian meaning George so I am stuck and have been for years. Are you in Orange County? I am trying to find 5 men and a father who served in the Rev. War from either Shawangunk or Warwick,Orange County.Three are Albert,William,Peter and possibly the father might be Sylvanus. Arlene Thanks for the info. all the Mackeys in Haverstraw and the Mackey brickyards in Verplanck are all the same family and descend from two brothers.

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/YUB.2ACI/2053.1.1.1.1.1.2 Message Board Post: DeNoyelles' genealogy book "Birth of an American Family" is available in most of the county libraries, but for in-house use only. "Within These Gates" says about the "fabulous clay deposits along the west shore" that they were used in manufacturing brick in 1773, but the big venture began with the arrival in 1815 to South Haverstraw of James Wood, an Englishman with brickmaking knowledge. In 1852 Richard A. VerValen invented an improved brick machine and "North Rockland was off to 75 years of full employment and prosperity." Talking about marching bands, DeNoyelles says that the ranks of the West Haverstraw Fife and Drum Corps were led by the tallest man, high-hatted in a big bearskin. "James H. Mackey of Garnerville guided its martial strains for some years, about twenty, with his ramrod over-six-feet frame and his regal baton." In his list of brickyards, he notes a Mackey yard in Haverstraw in 1839; Mackey Yards in Verplanck in 1904; and several other Mackey names - Silas G. in Grassy Point in 1872, Daniel G. in Grassy Point in 1863; and W. H. in Verplanck in 1899. So the Mackey family was indeed connected with the brick industry for an exceptionally long period of time. The other very early names (in addition to James Wood) were Clark and Fowler, Drury, and Allison.

    3. The index to Within These Gates does not show any Harings or McCleods, but there are five "Jersey" notations in the index. The first, on page 115, is from the Rockland County Messenger (newspaper) on Feb. 8, 1866, in an exceptionally cold winter. "The travel to New York is by Mr. Jersey's sleigh over the ice to Croton across the frozen Hudson River. This is nearly four miles, which he runs in a half an hour. He makes four trips per day from the American Hotel........." On page 120 and 132, references to Frank E. Jersey, tugboat captain (the tugs towed the barges full of bricks to the city). He was captain of the tug "Mable", and dates of 1908 and 1930 are mentioned. On page 171, a reference to stable boss "Seward 'Sue' Jersey, a man wondrous with the ways of horses" (the original boy named Sue? - sorry, couldn't resist!) Page 185, a picture of the ship the Commodore, 1905 - an Edward Jersey is identified. The picture is too small to recognize a face, but at the Brick Museum they just might have the full sized picture. Many interesting anecdotes in this book - it's available from the Brick Museum in Haverstraw, and I'm pretty sure it's less than $20.
