FYI For those of you who are new to Irish research. Ireland is like no other place on earth as far as Land records go and the Civil divisions of authority WWW.saunruad.com Is a site on the web that can explain. ================ Back in 1960's this finding a place name on a tombstone is not so new. In 1816 at the death of a man from Ireland my ancestor. Oldest of his family. Someone of his family put born Tunien, County Cavan, Ireland. Which is correct. Do not make the mistake of turning in around to read Cavan County which is correct for Ireland only. Every other place I have done research is the same or similar to the US system. Even in LA, California there are townships which divides up our rural/farm area. Townland is a smallest division of Land and is also the address of the rural area. Tunien , Townland where he lived in Ireland. Now there can be more places by the same name in the same County in every county. So how do they tell the difference. In the size of the place. Now that is not in the books but learned by hard experience. ============== Back to the first example, Name of person, birth place Tunien, County Cavan , Ireland. Place of Death Argyle , Washington County, New York. Please note the difference. I paid attention to it and just took a photo of it for recording my notes. Being "A Catholic Cemetery" has not much to it as I have found. They do not use the the Catholic Parishes in Ireland as names of places. The only good the Catholic Parish is any Good is when you look to The Catholic Church Records. ============== The leavels of Government divisions you need to find a place Townland, Civil Parish, County, and Provence. The Civil Parish has nothing for any church, as the name says it is a Civil Parish now that ought to make it clear enough for anyone. ================= Divisions of Land and Goverment. Townland , County , Civil Parish , Poor Law Union, and Province. These are what Ireland uses, just forget what you think is correct, and use these. It will save you so much grief. And if you make a Sur Name it will help you from looking so ignorant. Ignorant is just something you did not pay any attention to. In this case here anyone who know will see you got your records from some one else's hard work and research stolen. Even if you source your information as From "so and so" and it is not the original source which is what you should have when you source your information. How else are you going to have others find the source and they can find your pedigree proven with no questions asked. =============== Now that is "Old School" as you can get. Now "New School" is to take the information you find on the Internet and use it as you please. Then you are just a name collector and not a Genealogist. Use the computer as a tool to find, and not a source tool. ================= Am I old school yes.... I learned to do it the hard way with research and hard work. Did I stay old school yes..... but I learned and was self taught to use the computer and do the research. There are plenty of good web sites and paid subscriptions site that can help you find items. Use them to find and some mim of proof. The Census how has in index but not every name as is claimed. I have found three that are not in them..... Contact the Company and let them know, what you find and fell thru the net then will be added to the index. They depend on the user a lot for that. If you have any questions please contact me at my email address. " Marcus" I am here fm ================ If you see Pat Connor information on the web use the photo as first hand information, because it is just as old school as you can get. There may be a mistake in it, but it is not Pat's. That would be who ever had the stone made or the maker of the stone. For the rest of you Mr. Conner is doing you a great favor it what he is doing. And although the records have nothing to do with my research. Mr. Pat Conner , I thank you for your dedication to your craft, all others should take notice and follow suite. fm
