    1. Re: [Rensselaer] PHILLIPS-ELDRIDGE
    2. Hi Jan, Wondering if you have anything on a Francis Phillips, married to John W. Taylor. I know he died around 1920. They are burried in the E. Nassau Cem. Thanks, Ed in Ct

    3. Hi, Ed I recognise this Frances PHILLIPS. But we need more PHILLIPS expertise than I have to find her great-grandfather! Can any of YOU help? Frances PHILLIPS (1856-1911) was a daughter of Nicholas PHILLIPS (1822-1882) and wife Margaret J. SHAVER (born ca 1825); both were born in Rensselaer County, NY, as was Frances. Frances married ca 1877 to John W. TAYLOR. Nicholas PHILLIPS was the eldest son of David PHILLIPS (23 March 1800-6 February 1881) and his wife Sarah (September 1805-29 July 1885), maiden surname unknown to me. David PHILLIPS had been born in Dutchess Co NY; wife Sarah had been born in Rensselaer Co NY. I am not certain who the father of this David PHILLIPS was. Can any other PHILLIPS researchers help with this? On the one hand, he is the only David PHILLIPS whom I can find who MAY have been living in Nassau, Rensselaer Co NY in 1838, when Roswell PHILLIPS (1771-1838) of Schodack, Rensselaer Co NY wrote his last will and when that will was probated; those probate papers specify that Roswell PHILLIPS's son David PHILLIPS was a resident of Nassau. And indeed, there WAS a "David R. PHILLIPS" in the 1840 US Census in Nassau. Also, in the 1865 NY State Census, Nicholas PHILLIPS lives right next door to Charles DREW, who was definitely a member of the Greenbush/Schodack PHILLIPS family (his mother was Anner PHILLIPS DREW, sister of Roswell PHILLIPS). On the other hand, though, the David PHILLIPS who was Frances's grandfather resided in Grafton, Rensselaer Co NY in 1850. Grafton is a place where an entirely different PHILLIPS family lived, although they used many of the same forenames and may be related as cousins or something to the Schodack/Greenbush PHILLIPSes. Also, Frances's grandfather David PHILLIPS named his eldest son NICHOLAS; this is a forename not found ANYwhere in the Schodack/Greenbush PHILLIPS family. Also, Frances's grandfather David PHILLIPS was born in Dutchess Co NY in about 1800, whereas Roswell PHILLIPS is listed in Albany Co NY in the 1800 US Census. The Greenbush-Schodack PHILLIPSes had indeed come from Dutchess Co NY (actually, the part that's now Putnam Co NY), but they were already in Rensselaer Co NY by 1800. Never have I seen the middle initial "R." used for Frances's grandfather David PHILLIPS in a record that would include his family, so I can't tell whether David R. PHILLIPS of Nassau in 1838 and 1840 is the same person who moved from Grafton to Nassau during the 1850s. There's a wealth of information about all these PHILLIPSes on the Rensselaer County, NY GenWeb site at http://www.rootsweb.com/~nyrensse/. What do you think about all this, Ed?
