    3. This was announced and demonstrated at the FGS conference last weekend. I got a chance to try it out in the exhibit hall and signed up as a volunteer. I haven't heard back from them yet, but I'm sure lots of people signed up over the last week. The project as I understand it is to scan and make images available online with volunteer created indexes to access them. The only project currently in process is Georgia Death Records. If you have a group of volunteers with a project in mind, you should contact them and see if it is something that can be initiated. The indexing can be done more efficiently than on previous projects because (1) the images being indexed will be distributed via the internet in small batches; (2) there will be a time limit on each batch to keep on person from holding up the whole project; (3) the software they developed to facilitate the indexing really speeds extraction and the comparison of A and B sets. (A & B sets: each batch is distributed to two different extractors. Once they upload, the two sets are compared for differences and an administrator or arbitor decides which is correct -- though as I understand it, both versions become part of the index. You can learn more about it at the following links -- including pdf files from the presentations given at the FGS conference. http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library/Education/frameset_education.asp?PAGE=education_conferences_fgs_2005.asp http://deseretnews.com/dn/view/0,1249,605153189,00.html http://genealogy.about.com/b/a/201217.htm http://www.dearmyrtle.com/05/0806.htm Beverly Levine Smallwood Wheeling, Illinois ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, September 12, 2005 7:26 PM Subject: Re: [Rensselaer] LDS Indexing project > What is a local group administrator?
