    3. Hi Pat, Bill & Cathy, Lest we get into a big discussion about the question, "was the following customary?" I remember also my mother and grandmother canning fresh peaches with cinnamon and pears with cloves. So, I don't think it was an Irish custom only. Many of the recipes that Grandma and Mom used, were right out of the BALL canning books, and some of them were from my great grandmothers books. Mom made sickle pears only once and they were delicious, but must have been a lot of work or pears were not available or?? Now, on the other hand, I know that my grandparents were not Irish, but in the 1920's they lived in South Troy, so it is possible that one of the neighbors shared a recipe or two with Grandma...and that will never be proved!
