"Rensselaer County has declared a state of emergency beginning at 9:05 a.m. on Dec 12. for a period not to exceed 5 days. The county has established an emergency operations center. Residents are urged to limit all non essential travel." The cause of the state of emergency was the rain that froze on all surfaces, the weight of which has brought down a great many trees and branches, including on roadways. This mailing list is for communications concerning genealogy and history. I think this event is historically worth mentioning on this list. Adjoining Columbia Co. also declared a state of emergency. Adjoining Albany Co. did not, but had at least 50,000 people without power. As far as I know, there are still people without power in all three counties, and some are expected to be without electricity for a few more days. Cliff Lamere, Albany, NY
Thanks for the notice, Cliff. My sister lives in New Baltimore and I have been trying to reach her. Is it bad down there? > "Rensselaer County has declared a state of emergency beginning at 9:05 > a.m. on Dec 12. for a period not to exceed 5 days. Pat, The Town of New Baltimore is in northernmost Greene Co., just south of the village of Ravena which is in Albany Co. Ravena set up a shelter or warming station because of loss of electricity in at least part of the village. I know someone who lives a mile or less south of the village in New Baltimore and didn't lose power. But, New Baltimore covers a large and probably variable area. If you send me a phone number privately, I'll keep trying it three times a day for the next several days until I get an answer. I'd be happy to do that for anyone who can't reach a local relative, but only if you have tried and failed a couple of times. I consider local to be the counties of Rensselaer, Albany, Columbia, Greene, Schenectady and Saratoga. What I would need is your name and city or state (so they know I'm not a scam artist), the person's name, the person's locality, and the person's phone number including area code. Please do NOT send this personal information to the mailing list by mistake. Don't simply hit Reply when making this request. You will have to copy and paste my email address into the address line.
