He was baptized at the Wynantskill Reformed Protestant Dutch Church in Rensselaer Co, NY and his parents were listed as Peter SCHERMERHORN and Mary MILLER. Peter SCHERMERHORN and Maria MULLER were married in 1797 at the Greenbush Protestant Dutch Reformed Church in Rensselaer Co, NY and they also had daughter listed in those church records as born ion 4 Dec 1799 named Caty. I do find a reference to John J. and Peter SCHERMERHORN selling land in 1837 on the Schodack Creek. Don't know if these are the same John and Peter. I know nothing else about these individuals. The reason this is important to me is that I'm wondering if this John might be my wife's ancestor, John J. SCHERMERHORN who died about 1859 in Grant Co, WI. I do not know when he was born, but his wife Caroline was born in 1804 in NY. The two youngest known sons Benjamin and Jeremiah were born in 1832 and 1835 in NY. Hiram was born around 1838 in OH, and John was born in 1842 (censuses give OH, MI and IL as place of birth). I have not been able to find John J SCHERMERHORN in any census before the 1852 state census of Clayton Co, IA and the 1855 state census of Grant Co, WI. Caroline and family are in the 1860 census of Grant Co, WI. I would like evidence to prove or disprove my speculation that John b.1804, Rensselaer Co, NY is my wife's John J. SCHERMERHORN.
