Five local churches are scheduled to close very soon. They are: St. Patrick's - Watervliet St. Brigid's - Green Island St. Patrick's - Troy St. Joseph's - Green Island St. Mary's - Troy Before these churches close, the Troy Irish Genealogy Society could use volunteer help in documenting the family names and inscriptions that are memorialized within the church buildings on the stained glass windows, statues, wall plaques, etc. There is a lot of information on these memorials such as family names, date and place of birth or death, titles and positions held, records of service in our nations various wars, etc. Once these churches close, this information which is of interest to family historians, will be lost. If you are not familiar with the Troy Irish Genealogy Church Memorial Project visit the TIGS website: www.rootsweb.com/~nytigs/ click on PROJECTS and then click on CHURCH MEMORIALS AND FAMILY NAMES. This project covers churches of ALL denominations and includes closed churches as well as those that are remaining open. To date, the 13 churches already on the website are: Church of the Ascension - Troy Christ Church United Methodist - Troy Cornerstone Community Church - Troy First United Presbyterian Church - Troy First Presbyterian Church - Troy (Now Bush Memorial Center at Sage College) Oakwood Presbyterian - Troy St. Francis de Sales - Troy St. Joseph's - Green Island St. Lawrence - Troy St. Paul's Episcopal - Troy St. Paul the Apostle - Troy St. Peter's - Troy St. William's - Troy Out of the five churches scheduled for closing, the memorials in St. Joseph's, Green Island have already been documented and can be found on the TIGS website.
