    1. [NYRENSSE] Seeking onformation on DAVIS/DAVIES
    2. Steve Davis
    3. Hello; My name is Steve Davis, and I am responding to this list from Northern California. I am new to this list, and I look forward to any assistance or guidance you can provide me in my quest for information on my DAVIS/DAVIES Ancestry in Renssalaer and Oswego Counties and the general Mohawk Valley. I apologize for any redundancy, but I have posted this message on both this and the NYOSWEGO mailing lists, as the DAVIS lives overlapped the Mohawk Valley Region, particularly, according to family legend, Troy and Utica, NY, and may have also included other list areas (recommendations welcome). I have attempted every possible online resource that I could find, before asking for assistance here. I don't want to waste anyone's time, so if you know of any online or offline resource that might assist me, your tips will be appreciated. Here is what I know: I am a family historian looking for information on three generations of DAVIES/DAVIS Doctors in the Troy and Utica areas of NY from 1790-1830. My G-G-G-G-grandfather, Dr. Edward Davies, (b. Wales estimated circa 1755-65); he was educated in Wales, graduated from the Medical University in Aberystwyth, Wales (his Davies family was allegedly instrumental in the establishment of that Medical University, at which an Edward Davies Hall still exists). He and his son imigrated to America where Edward was reportedly in the medical Corps for the Continental Army. He is said to have settled in Troy, NY, where he had a medical practice (circa 1810-15?). He may have helped establish a medical school in the area. My G-G-G-grandfather, Dr. James Timothy or James Lloyd Davis (Davies) (b. estimated circa 1775-90) came to America with his father, above, and was sent back to Wales to also graduate from the Medical University in Aberystwyth. He then returned to America, legally changed his name to DAVIS, and established a medical practice in Utica, NY (circa 1815-1840?) and may have been an instructor at a local Medical University. My G-G-grandfather, Dr. George Edward Davis, b. circa 1801 or 1810, received his medical training at a Medical School/University in mid-state NY sometime between 1818-1834. He then migrated east on the Erie Canal as it was completed and settled in the Saginaw Michigan Area. He married Mary West, b. circa 1815-1820, also reportedly from NY, at the time of the move. I have been able to document Dr. George Davis' life after that move, but I need info from the Uttica-Troy regions to complete the three generations of DAVISES. I have researched medical schools in the region and find that only the following Medical schools existed in that time frame: 1.. The College of Physicians and Surgeons of the Western District of New York. 2.. Kings and Columbia Schools of Medicine, established 1767. 3.. College of Physicians and Surgeons, established 1807-13 4.. Rutgers College (Queens College), established 1812-16 5.. New York School of Medicine, established 1830-33. Here is where I can use the help of anyone on this list who might have information they are willing to share with me: 1.. Where would I look to find information on students and instructors for any of the above medical schools in the time fram indicated? Is there a central information source for NY Physicians and Surgeons that would go back that far? Are the records of the above schools, since discontinued, contained in any local library, historical society, or other repository? 2.. Where would I find birth records for this region and timeframe, for both George Davis and Mary West? Family history speaks of an "Uncle Ben West" reportedly a Quaker from NY or PA. 3.. I have found a few reference sites related to the Continental Army Medical Corps, but does anyone know a reliable source to confirm his service to the Corps in the battle of 1812, as told in family legend? 4.. Anyone have any idea where I could inquire as to the legal records of the name change from DAVIES to DAVIS? Family lore insists it was done legally by James Lloyd (or James Timothy) Davis to demonstrate he was not sympathetic to the crown around the war of 1812. I very anxiously await any hints, clues, leads, or recommendations anyone might provide me. Thank you; Steven Davis 425 Lake Vista Lakeport, CA 95453 steve@economywebdesign.com steve@racerchaser.com

    2. Steve, have you tried the Troy Irish Genealogy Society website. Just google it and it will come up. There are many transcription projects with thousands of names that may be helpful to you.
