Bryan, You might want to check with Surrogate's Court in the Rensselaer County Courthouse to see if guardianship papers were filed for the children. Many, if not all, the records have been indexed. I'm not familiar with what orphanages were in operation during the 1860s but you could find this information in the Troy City Directories available at the Troy Public Library.
