Indentured servants were WHITE and they had AGREEED to work in exchange for passage. Slaves were BLACK and were BOUGHT and SOLD and had NO CHOICE in the matter. "FREE" meant that they would then have a choice (as far as it went) and could not be bought or sold (provided they could prove that they were free).
