There is a picture of the Asa Douglas House, also known as the Shumway House in "Stephentown Historical Album, 1977," published by the Stephentown Historical Society. It is located on Pease Rd., very near the present Mass. border. His land was originally within the territory of Massachusetts, now this area is part of New York. "Stephentown Historical Society, Album #4", published 1992, shows a photo of the NYS Historical Landmark sign: "Home of Asa Douglas, First settler of Stephentown on his grant of land, 1000 acres received 1762 from General Court of Massachusetts for services in early wars." Part of the Douglas lands were in Hancock, Mass., and part in Stephentown. For a history of the family, see "The History of Rensselaer County", Nathaniel Bartlett Sylvester, 1880, specifically the chapter, The History of Stephentown. Asa, born in Plainfield, Connecticut, 11 December 1715, was a Whig, and led a company of thirty "Silver Grays" at the battle of Bennington on 16 August 1777. Disguised as an old farmer looking for his lost cows, he acted as a spy at the siege of Ticonderoga. Patricia Van Wagenen Harrison
