Patti, West Troy was the old name for Watervliet. Someone must have written Watervliet on the side of the census in modern times, just for clarification purposes. Troy is on the east side of the Hudson River. West Troy was on the opposite shore. Old Troy city directories (1880s) list West Troy as separate from Troy. It was in Albany Co. I don't see how they could have been considered to be the same place in 1840. * My question is regarding the actual page of the census and also county info. > I found this William Gray in the Albany census in West Troy, NY. * Patti, at the site below, Watervliet is considered South Troy and is in Albany Co. This site is great for locating place names, both current and historic. Vivian, South Bend, IN http://geonames.usgs.gov/gnisform.html
