I am quite surprised at the number of slaves counted in the 1810 & 1820 U.S. Census in Schodack. In NY it was illegal to have slaves after 1827. Are there any local records available recording their change of status? Any record of buying, selling, taxing? I've read the McManus A history of Negro slavery in New York, but that doesn't cite sources tied to Rensselaer County. Liz Garrity
