    1. [Rensselaer] POORHOUSE Information
    2. Poor House Lady
    3. Hi, folks! We would like to invite you to re-visit our website, The POORHOUSE STORY (a clearinghouse for information about 19th century American poorhouses) at http://www.poorhousestory.com (We felt that even folks researching counties adjacent to Washington County NY might benefit from having the resource described below. So please forgive the cross postings.) In my book, Portraits of Poverty, I abstracted over 1600 Inmate Registration Certificates (from 1875 through 1900) from the WASHINGTON County Poorhouse We just posted the complete NAME INDEX. You can find the index and lots of information about the certificates and the book on the WASHINGTON County page. If you would like more poorhouse information, I will be doing presentations about poorhouse history and records (see http://www.poorhousestory.com/PRESENTATIONforNov2001.htm ) on November 10th in Orange County and on November 17th in Saratoga for Heritage Hunters. I would really like to meet some of you folks there! (We've gotta stop meeting just like this ... only by e-mail. <grin>) DIRECTIONS: At the homepage (link above) click on POORHOUSES BY STATE, then on NEW YORK on the table of states, then on WASHINGTON on the table of counties. If you will scroll down to the section on Records, you will see the entry (with a yellow NEW arrow). (NOTE: If you have visited the site recently, you may have to click on REFRESH on your browser to see the new information.) There are other pages on the site which may give you some interesting perspective on poorhouses. They are off the homepage and include: the HISTORY page and the LETTER TO GENEALOGISTS as well as FEATURED ARTICLES. There are great tips for researching poorhouse records for yourself on the RECORDS page; and you might want to subscribe to our (almost) monthly newletter (which you can do in the lower right corner of the homepage). The information on our site will only grow through the submissions of generous readers. If you would like to e-mail me ... please do so off-list because I cannot maintain subscriptions to as many lists as we post messages on. (You can use an e-mail link off one of our web pages.) We hope you enjoy the site! Thanks, Linda Crannell (aka=The Poorhouse Lady) BestWishes, Linda Crannell (aka=The Poorhouse Lady)
