Looking for a Taylor family in Troy, Rensselaer County New York, 1840-1860. ALEXANDER HENRY MUHLENBURG TAYLOR was born in Manchester, England 1840, father was John Lyman Oliver Taylor born in NY and mother was Margareth Elizabeth Pelham born in England. Alexander came to US when he was two, his parents were supposed to have died in a shipping or boating accident and he was raised by his uncle. He received a large inheritance in 1861, joined the Army from New York City where he was a mercantile clerk. No known siblings or other family. His family was "close personal friends" of Roscoe Conkling and he spent summers in Albany at or near the Conkling home. The connection is unknown to the Muhlenburg family but I think a Mahlon Taylor from NJ may have served in the Revolution with Gen Muhlenburg and there are some records in Augusta Co., Va., of a Mahlon Taylor.
