I have transcribed the few paragraphs in a state business directory that described Troy in 1869 because I was so surprised about what it said about Troy. The city was in two counties and the two parts were separated by the Hudson River. They were called East Troy and West Troy according to the directory. However, from city directories that I have seen for about 1875, I would say that they were called Troy and W. Troy. This should answer Patti Smith's question from May 2nd. She said, "I found an old piece of paper my father was jotting notes about my gggrandfather and I saw "W. Troy" written BUT when my gggrandfather joined the civil war in 1862, he put down his last place of residence was "Troy, NY". Both were apparently correct for that year. Here is the URL for the the few paragraphs of text which describe the city. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~clifflamere/Misc/MI-Troy-1869.htm Cliff
