The Free newspaper database website at www.fultonhistory.com is growing leaps and bounds! There are over six million scanned, digitized and search able newspaper pages from all over New York State, ranging in years from about 1820 to modern times. This excellent free newspaper website recently received accolades in an article in the Syracuse Post-Standard newspaper. The link to the news story is on the Upstate New York Genealogy Blog at http://ny-genes.blogspot.com/ As a side note, the fultonhistory site is now extremely busy and please have patience, or try it at off hours for a while. Does Rensselaer County have births, marriages, and deaths registry with a local county clerk (say Pittstown) prior to 1800. If so, how does one from Canada connect with the right authorities.

The murder of Robert Ross may have been 1891 or 1892, not 1895 as I stated in an earlier email. I'm trying to find the exact date right now. Deanna
John McGough and Bartholomew "Bat' Shea shot John and Robert Ross respectively, probaby 1895 in Troy. John Ross survived the attack, Robert died. John was committed to Dannamora Prison in Clinton Co. for a sentence of 20 years. Bat was sentenced to death which was carried ou,by Execution Feb. 1896. I don't find John McGough in Dannamora Prison in 1900, nor in any other Prison per the 1900 NY State Census. I have no stats on John at all. I can't identify him on Census. Don't know his birth year nor his parents. I think it possible that he is kin to the Utica, Oneida Co., NY groupof McGoughs, my ancestral relatives. http://www.fultonhistory.com/fulton.html Site has given me much information on these men in regard to to the murder, the trial and Bat's execution, but no stats on them. I wonder what happened to John McGough. Deanna
