    1. Re: [NYRENSSE] John McGough marriage

    3. Hi! I'm new to the list, and was hoping someone might be able to help. My gr-gr-gr-grandparents passed through Troy between living in Quebec and living in Joliet, and two of their sons were born there. I know the family was Irish Catholic, so I didn't know if there might be baptismal records for the boys, or if the county might have kept birth records that early. The two births I'm hoping to find are: Andrew Wallace b. about 1845 James Wallace b. about 1846 Their parents were Thomas Wallace and Esther Hagerty. Thomas and Esther were originally Ireland (near Mullingar, if family lore holds true), but left either together or separately. Thomas' signature appears on a baptism and a marriage in Quebec in January, 1829, but their oldest son (Thomas, Jr.) was born in Ireland about 1829 (according to Census information). There were seven children born and baptized Catholic in Quebec, and I've been able to find their births (and one death) in the Drouin collection online. The last one born in Quebec was my gr-gr-grandfather, Peter Hagerty Wallace, he was baptized on 11 Aug 1843, and is listed in the Eastern Townships missionary register in the Drouin images on Ancestry. My understanding is that Andrew and James were born in Troy, NY, before the family moved on to Joliet, Illinois. The youngest two children were born in Joliet, and the family was listed in Joliet in the 1850 Census. According to the Census Elizabeth (or Lizzie) was born in Illinois about 1847. Any help would be greatly appreciated! ~~Bren http://www.myspace.com/brendahebert http://daSinga.crazyguyonabike.com ____________________________________________________________________________________ Be a better friend, newshound, and know-it-all with Yahoo! 1. [NYRENSSE] John McGough marriage
    2. Deanna Smith
    3. John McGough, son of Owen and Catherine Dugan McGough, was married ca 1908, probably in Troy. I'm not positive yet that they are a Catholic couple. John told the census enumerator in 1910, Troy, that his parents were born in Ire.English which could indicate the Northern part which was basically Protestant. I know that there are many church in Troy. Is there an online site for marriages in Troy? I will go to Dept., of Health to get the exact date if I need to but I had hoped I could find this online. 3. Cliff, I was interested in your reply to Emily. I have been searching for a long time for a baptismal record for Marie Elodie Mailhot (Mayotte), born September 3, 1850, in Troy. (Parents might be Francois or Francis and Mary or Marie). I have had no luck with various churches in the area. Would you know how I could go about accessing these school district records to see if perhaps she is there? I live in Canada. 3. Emily, 1847 to 1850/51 was the only previous time period when births were required to be recorded. In that time period, it was school districts which were required to record births. Most of those records have been lost by now, but Rensselaer Co. had more preserved than for most counties. I don't know if Troy preserved such records. 3. Outside of New York City, birth certificates were required for each birth in the state beginning in 1881. The original handwritten certificates had to be sent to the state. The cities of Albany, Buffalo and Yonkers were not required to begin sending theirs to the state until 1914, but that is because they had their own rules in place before 1881. Despite the requirement, some doctors and midwives did not report some of the births, so no certificate was issued for those births. Even though the index may have said Freestville, it was named after a DeFreest family. Today it is called Defreestville. The Defreetsville spelling in the record of Eleanor Goewey is a typo. Pokeepsie is now spelled Poughkeepsie. The -gh- is not pronounced, so the earlier spellings included Pokeepsie, but probably not as official spellings. For people who are not local, I have only heard it pronounced Po-KIP-see. One note of caution. In the index, I have seen G'ville a few times. Gloversville (Fulton Co.) is a city, so it is the location most likely meant by such an abbreviation, but I know of one occasion where it meant Glenville (Town of) in Schenectady Co. which is quite a bit closer to Rensselaer Co. In my own study of a single surname, I have noticed that some of the people did move from Rensselaer Co. to Schenectady Co. or vice versa. If the index said G'ville, try to confirm Gloversville with another piece of information. On the site I mentioned, sometimes women were listed under their maiden names rather than under the married name that was on the stone. I'm not sure why, but I have noticed it to be true on occasion. If you don't know her maiden name, use the site's search engine to look for all occurences of the married surname. If she is actually listed under her maiden name (perhaps buried with her parents), the data following her name may list the name of her spouse. In that manner you might be able to determine an unknown maiden name, and you would have found the entry you want.
