The following email, which was recently posted on the Troy Irish Genealogy Mailing List, about the Rensselaer County Marriage Index Project of the Troy Irish Genealogy Society may be of interest to members of the Rensselaer County Mailing List. A. List members may be interested in how the work is done on the Rensselaer County Marriage Index Project and who does the work. The following items may be of interest and may trigger more volunteers to help on this major project. 1. First of all, TIGS uses their own laptop computer and scanner. The IBM laptop was purchased with TIGS dues money and the scanner was donated by Jeanne Keefe, the TIGS webmaster. Local TIGS members use this equipment to scan the Marriage Index Books in the basement of the County Clerk's Building on Third Street in Troy. 2. The combined index for Volume 6 and 7, with 4,000 marriages and 8,000 names is currently being worked on. Two sessions of scanning the Grooms names resulted in 231 pdf files which were sent to volunteers for transcribing. Transcribing and proof reading of these 231 files is 99% complete. On May 1, 2008 the first pages were sent to volunteers for transcribing. 3. The TIGS Project Coordinator sends the pdf files and the Excel sheet to individual transcribers. As each page is returned an additional page is then sent to the worker. All returned pages are then sent to a proof reader to double check the data entry. When all the Grooms files are finished they will be sorted in marriage number order and analyzed to identify missing marriage numbers or duplicate numbers. 4. The next step in the process is to scan the 4,000 Brides names and create pdf files to send to the volunteers. This work will be started in the next few days. 5. Work on data entry of the Grooms names has involved 21 volunteers from all over the country. Here is a state by state breakdown of the volunteers: New York State - 13 Albany -1 Clifton Park - 3 Poughkeepsie - 1 Saratoga Springs - 1 Troy - 3 Wynantskill - 2 Williamson - 1 Syracuse - 1 Massachusetts - 3 Pennsylvania - 2 Iowa - 1 Virginia -1 Tennessee - 1 6. As you may know, the following volumes of the Marriage Index with their 32,000 names are currently on-line on the Troy Irish Genealogy website www.rootsweb.com/~nytigs/ Vol. 1 5,000 marriages with 10,000 Names January 1908-April 1913 Vol. 2 5,000 marriages with 10,000 Names April 1913-July 1918 Vol. 3 2,000 marriages with 4,000 Names May 1918-April 1920 Vol. 4 & 5 4,000 marriages with 8,000 Names April 1920-January 1924 7. Photocopies of documents on file OR of the record in the marriage book for these 16,000 marriages, are available from the County Clerk's Office for a fee of $5.00. Separate request forms for EACH Volume with the necessary instructions can be printed from the TIGS website. B. Additional volunteers can always be used to work on the Marriage Index Project. The quicker the data entry process, the faster each index can be put on-line on the TIGS website. Volunteers can help as follows: 1. Become a volunteer transcriber. All you need on your computer is Adobe, which can be downloaded free and Excel. Data entry items are minimal; last name, first name, page number, marriage number and date of marriage. As all the work is handled through email, volunteers can be located anywhere in the world. 2. The following need for volunteers can only be done by capital area residents as the work has to be done at the County Clerk's Office in Troy. As previously noted, the index for Volume 8 does not show the marriage number and the date of the marriage. So, before we can scan these pages, a look-up of the page number in the Marriage Book itself must be made to obtain the marriage number and the date of the marriage for each name on the index. Photocopies of all the pages in the Vol. 8 index have already been made and now we need volunteers to post the marriage number and the marriage date to the photocopied index pages. We will also face this problem when we get to Volume 9 and Volume 10, the last two books of this record series. If anyone is interested in volunteering to help with EITHER of the above items, they can email me off list at seamus@nycap.rr.com . Regards, Bill McGrath TIGS Project Coordinator Clifton Park, NY

Still need confirmation. In the 1850 census of Schoharie Co, NY in Summit is John Schermerhorn b.abt 1804, NY with wife Abigail b.1804, NY and children Esther A., Calvin L and Hiram. I cannot find him in the 1840 census, but there is a Peter SCHERMERHORN listed in Summit in the 1840 census. This one is not the Peter, father of John b.1804. This is Peter I SCHERMERHORN b.1786, who was married to Catherine LETTS b.1791. They did have a son John, but he was born in 1812. Would like more information on these families. The Troy Irish Genealogy Website www.rootsweb.com/~nytigs/ has a lengthy article on genealogy research in Troy, New York. To see the article on the website, click on RESOURCES and scroll down to the title heading. Many of the tips covered in the article can be applied to doing research in areas other than Troy. Of particular interest in the article is the section on Troy Deaths and Burials on microfilm at the Troy Library. These Death and Burial records are an important reference for Troy area researchers since many of the entries predate the 1880 New York State law requiring the reporting of deaths. Records start in 1833. Individuals who died outside of Troy are listed IF they were buried in Troy. Some years of these records (1833, 1835, 1839, 1841, 1842, 1845, 1863, 1864, 1881, 1882, 1883, 1885, 1889, 1890) are now available on line. Check out the Rensselaer County NY Genweb site, coordinated by Lin Van Buren, for these records as well as a fantastic amount of genealogy related information on Rensselaer County. Author: DanFranklin48 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.newyork.counties.rensselaer/4607/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Would like more information on John SCHERMERHORN b.15 Feb 1804, Rensselaer Co, NY. He was baptized at the Wynantskill Reformed Protestant Dutch Church in Rensselaer Co, NY and his parents were listed as Peter SCHERMERHORN and Mary MILLER. Peter SCHERMERHORN and Maria MULLER were married in 1797 at the Greenbush Protestant Dutch Reformed Church in Rensselaer Co, NY and they also had daughter listed in those church records as born ion 4 Dec 1799 named Caty. I do find a reference to John J. and Peter SCHERMERHORN selling land in 1837 on the Schodack Creek. Don't know if these are the same John and Peter. I know nothing else about these individuals. The reason this is important to me is that I'm wondering if this John might be my wife's ancestor, John J. SCHERMERHORN who died about 1859 in Grant Co, WI. I do not know when he was born, but his wife Caroline was born in 1804 in NY. The two youngest known sons Benjamin and Jeremiah were born in 1832 and 1835 in NY. Hiram was born around 1838 in OH, and John was born in 1842 (censuses give OH, MI and IL as place of birth). I have not been able to find John J SCHERMERHORN in any census before the 1852 state census of Clayton Co, IA and the 1855 state census of Grant Co, WI. Caroline and family are in the 1860 census of Grant Co, WI. I would like evidence to prove or disprove my speculation that John b.1804, Rensselaer Co, NY is my wife's John J. SCHERMERHORN. Rensselaer County List members who are not familiar with the Troy Irish Genealogy Website and its mailing list may be interested in this information on the Rensselaer County Marriage Index that was just posted to the TIGS mailing list. The following update on the status of the Rensselaer County Marriage Index project will be of interest to list members. A. Currently the following volumes of the Marriage Index with their 32,000 names are on-line on the Troy Irish Genealogy website www.rootsweb.com/~nytigs/ Vol. 1 5,000 marriages with 10,000 Names January 1908-April 1913 Vol. 2 5,000 marriages with 10,000 Names April 1913-July 1918 Vol. 3 2,000 marriages with 4,000 Names May 1918-April 1920 Vol. 4 & 5 4,000 marriages with 8,000 Names April 1920-January 1924 B. Photocopies of documents on file OR of the record in the marriage book for these 16,000 marriages, are available from the County Clerk's Office for a fee of $5.00. Separate request forms for EACH Volume with the necessary instructions can be printed from the TIGS website. C. TIGS workers and volunteers are now working on the index for Volumes 6 and 7 which has another 4,000 marriages and 8,000 names. To date all the Grooms names have been scanned and pdf files of the scanned pages are being sent to those volunteers who indicated they were interested in data entry for this phase of the project. The Brides names still have to be scanned and as usual we can always use help in the scanning process. Also, if there are other individuals on the TIGS mailing list who may be interested in doing some data entry work for this project, please email me off list at seamus@nycap.rr.com to see what is involved. D. The first 7 volumes of the Marriage Index were easy to work with as ALL of the important data elements were posted on the index pages. The index for Vol. 8, however, is a different story. Only the Grooms and Brides names, along with a page number, was posted to the index. Two examples of the posting are: NAMES OF GROOM PAGE Zimmerman C. Leslie 53 Zapp Donald 128 So, before we can scan these pages, a look-up of the page number in the Marriage Book itself must be made to obtain the marriage number and the date of the marriage for each name on the index. We will need local area volunteers to help with this index as it will take some time to look up the 4,000 names. Photocopies of all the pages in the Vol. 8 index have already been made and now we need volunteers to post the marriage number and the marriage date to the photocopied index pages. If anyone would like to help with these lookups, please email me off list at seamus@nycap.rr.com . Regards, Bill McGrath TIGS Project Coordinator Clifton Park, NY

He is 47 in the Baltimore Ward 14, Baltimore, Maryland Census record of 1860. Listed with him are his wife Margaret born 1809, Children Louisa abt. 1840, Adolph Born Abt. 1841 and died between 1900 and 1910, and Christenia abt. 1845. All show born in Hesse-Darmstadt. Adolph Sack son of Charles Sack married Emma Dannenfelser whom died in Chatham, Savannah, GA. (03/24/1926). Not sure if Emma was born in Germany or not, Census records indicate Georgia and another census indicates Germany. Census records however does indicate her parents born in Germany. In the New York Petitions for Naturalization List there are 3 Charles Sack's. The first Charles Sack has Naturalization dated 1 oct 1868, King of Barvaria, The second one has Charles Sack's Naturalization dated 23 Aug 1875, Emperor of Germany. The Third Charles Sack has a birthdate of 1880. So I know the third one is not him since he is born about 1813. Could one of these Charles Sack's be Charles Sack born 1813? How can you tell which Naturalization record might be him? I believe they came over on a ship called Roland. Could you please or someone tell me what to do from this point? I would also love to exchange my information and chat with another Sack or Dannenfelser.
