I like that this list gateways to the message board the way it does, you never know it may come in handy and help some who don't always view the message boards, I think we should keep it this way :) ----- Original Message ----- From: "Pat Connors" <nymets22@gmail.com> To: <nyrensse@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, July 03, 2008 12:56 PM Subject: [NYRENSSE] ADMIN Re: Reply or Reply All > Side note from admin: I believe a couple of years ago, as a list, we > decided we wanted to be gatewayed to the message board. Would anyone know if there were any census or tax accessements prior to the national census of 1790? I'm trying to find out where my 6th great grandfather was prior to going to Ren... County from Conn. Thank you Tim
I vote to keep it this way. Yes sometimes I get duplicates, and sometimes I get things that are irrelevant, but I would rather have the option of using the delete key than missing something that can really help. Dorothy, What you requested can't be done. This is a public mailing list so messages go to everyone on the mailing list whether a person hits Reply or Reply All. What you are asking for works with private groups of people who, for example, may be sending humorous or inspirational messages to each other. In addition, this "Obit of Edward Waugh" conversation has actually been taking place on a message board. It has been arranged so that this mailing list also receives the message board messages (they are "gatewayed" to the mailing list). You usually cannot see the email address of the person sending the message to the message board, so you can't contact them without posting a message that everyone on the message board can see. An alternative would be to send your own email address in the body of a message and ask the person to contact you privately. The message board messages end up in an archive, however, so private conversations would not benefit people who are interested in the string of messages in the future. One difference between a mailing list and a message board is that on the message board you get to choose which message you receive. In a sense, you take it down off the board and read it. A mailing list is like a mail box. All messages go there, but then you can throw away what you think is junk mail without opening it. I am sending this message only to the mailing list. Problem. Two copies of Dorothy's message were received by me, so it would seem that everyone must have gotten two copies of it. Both had the same time stamp. They both listed Dorothy as the sender instead of "gc-gateway@rootsweb.com". Under certain circumstances of replying to this gateway system, a reply to a message will be sent twice to the mailing list (NYRENSSE-L@rootsweb.com and nyrensse@rootsweb.com) at the same time that it is sent to the message board. Perhaps this can be corrected, or perhaps it is unavoidable. Cliff ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Dorothy Keith wrote: >Is there any way to get out of all these "Reply All" emails? Side note from admin: I believe a couple of years ago, as a list, we decided we wanted to be gatewayed to the message board. If a majority of the list would like to change this, I am open to a discussion. Thanks Cliff for the explanation. Is there any way to get out of all these "Reply All" emails? I have been inundated with emails that pertain to one person's interests. Please, when you get a response to your INITIAL inquiry, just respond to "Reply." Thank you, Tired of Deleting in Cincinnati. Hi Judy, Could the source be referring to the IGI at the LDS? Perhaps the Genealogical Index for Northern New York was copied from the LDS and put into book form? I also did a Google Book search with the words "Genealogical Index 4th Edition 1895" and quite a bit comes up. There is an Index to American Genealogies and to genealogical material contained in all works alphabetically arranged, fourth edition, Albany, 1895 in the Norfolk Library, Norfolk Conn. - this is the closest I came.
