    3. Thanks Cliff: It's good to get a lesson once in a while and the first day of the next decade may be a good place to begin. I'm an offender and try to correct myself, but that was one of the things some of my teachers couldn't drill into me along the way. I think I'll cut out your two posts and hang them above the monitor. Happy New Year to all of you. 3. This retired English teacher thanks you!! It's a pet peeve of mine. Jane Schneeloch -----Original Message----- From: nyrensse-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:nyrensse-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Cliff Lamere Sent: Friday, January 01, 2010 4:32 PM To: nyalbany@rootsweb.com; nycolumb@rootsweb.com; nyrensse@rootsweb.com Subject: [NYRENSSE] Plurals of surnames A very common punctuation error in genealogy is the use of the apostrophe followed by an 's' to create the plural of a surname. Exampled of that wrong usage follows: "There are seven Chadwick's on the census page." "Has anyone found obituaries for any Horner's in this county?" The error is becoming so common that it had me wondering if it was I who was doing it wrong. A little research had confirmed that an apostrophe should NOT be used to make the plural of a surname. Gardner's is incorrect as a plural, but correct to show possession (as in "Betty Gardner's pie was great."). The following plurals are correct. For most surnames, simply add an 's' to form the plural of it. Smith --> Smiths Bailey --> Baileys Gardner --> Gardners Van Woert --> Van Woerts However, if the name ends in an s, x, ch, sh, or a z, the plural is formed by adding an -es. Jones --> Joneses Maddox --> Maddoxes March --> Marches Rush --> Rushes Martinez --> Martinezes http://www.grammarbook.com/punctuation/apostro.asp See Rule 5. 3. Yes, I have been there a number of times visiting. I finally heard from my sister, last night. They didn't have electricity for a number of days and had a hard time keeping warm. Their son from Wynantskill in Rensselaer County came over to her place on Sunday to take a shower because they are still without electric and heat. However, a friend in Sharon Springs was fine and didn't get the freeze. I think when I was a kid growing in NY state we used to call these events a 'Silver Freeze'. Again, thanks for the help and news, Cliff. > > The Town of New Baltimore is in northernmost Greene Co., just south of > the village of Ravena which is in Albany Co. 3. We had one like that here in Memphis (Shelby County) TN, about fifteen years ago. And down here they are simply not prepared for even a snow flurry. Ne, I'm a born Yankee. There were some parts of the tri-state area that were without power for two plus weeks. We're on a freezing rain alert for tomorrow night. Wish us luck, please! And Ya' All be careful! 3. Pat, The Town of New Baltimore is in northernmost Greene Co., just south of the village of Ravena which is in Albany Co. Ravena set up a shelter or warming station because of loss of electricity in at least part of the village. I know someone who lives a mile or less south of the village in New Baltimore and didn't lose power. But, New Baltimore covers a large and probably variable area. If you send me a phone number privately, I'll keep trying it three times a day for the next several days until I get an answer. I'd be happy to do that for anyone who can't reach a local relative, but only if you have tried and failed a couple of times. I consider local to be the counties of Rensselaer, Albany, Columbia, Greene, Schenectady and Saratoga. What I would need is your name and city or state (so they know I'm not a scam artist), the person's name, the person's locality, and the person's phone number including area code. Please do NOT send this personal information to the mailing list by mistake. Don't simply hit Reply when making this request. You will have to copy and paste my email address into the address line. Residents are urged to limit all non essential travel." The cause of the state of emergency was the rain that froze on all surfaces, the weight of which has brought down a great many trees and branches, including on roadways. This mailing list is for communications concerning genealogy and history. I think this event is historically worth mentioning on this list. Adjoining Columbia Co. also declared a state of emergency. Adjoining Albany Co. did not, but had at least 50,000 people without power. As far as I know, there are still people without power in all three counties, and some are expected to be without electricity for a few more days. Cliff Lamere, Albany, NY

    3. Susan Brainard McCorkle, d 1912 Oct 16 ( age 70, b. Connecticut) and buried in Oakwood Cem. by Clark and Blake. She and husband in Section P, lot 171 ( would love a photo). Nearest relative listed on death record is Mrs. Whitehouse....daughter. I would love to know daughter's given name. Susan and husband Thomas Clark McCorkle, a Civil War Veteran) had girls Clara, Mary ( Mae), Milly, and Elizabeth ( Lizzie E), and a son Cephas. ( dates 1868-1879). Would also love connecting with fellow McCorkle researchers who may know more about this family. Martha
