    1. [NYRENSSE] Seeking onformation on DAVIS/DAVIES
    2. Steve Davis
    3. Hello; My name is Steve Davis, and I am responding to this list from Northern California. I am new to this list, and I look forward to any assistance or guidance you can provide me in my quest for information on my DAVIS/DAVIES Ancestry in Renssalaer and Oswego Counties and the general Mohawk Valley. I apologize for any redundancy, but I have posted this message on both this and the NYOSWEGO mailing lists, as the DAVIS lives overlapped the Mohawk Valley Region, particularly, according to family legend, Troy and Utica, NY, and may have also included other list areas (recommendations welcome). I have attempted every possible online resource that I could find, before asking for assistance here. I don't want to waste anyone's time, so if you know of any online or offline resource that might assist me, your tips will be appreciated. Here is what I know: I am a family historian looking for information on three generations of DAVIES/DAVIS Doctors in the Troy and Utica areas of NY from 1790-1830. My G-G-G-G-grandfather, Dr. Edward Davies, (b. Wales estimated circa 1755-65); he was educated in Wales, graduated from the Medical University in Aberystwyth, Wales (his Davies family was allegedly instrumental in the establishment of that Medical University, at which an Edward Davies Hall still exists). He and his son imigrated to America where Edward was reportedly in the medical Corps for the Continental Army. He is said to have settled in Troy, NY, where he had a medical practice (circa 1810-15?). He may have helped establish a medical school in the area. My G-G-G-grandfather, Dr. James Timothy or James Lloyd Davis (Davies) (b. estimated circa 1775-90) came to America with his father, above, and was sent back to Wales to also graduate from the Medical University in Aberystwyth. He then returned to America, legally changed his name to DAVIS, and established a medical practice in Utica, NY (circa 1815-1840?) and may have been an instructor at a local Medical University. My G-G-grandfather, Dr. George Edward Davis, b. circa 1801 or 1810, received his medical training at a Medical School/University in mid-state NY sometime between 1818-1834. He then migrated east on the Erie Canal as it was completed and settled in the Saginaw Michigan Area. He married Mary West, b. circa 1815-1820, also reportedly from NY, at the time of the move. I have been able to document Dr. George Davis' life after that move, but I need info from the Uttica-Troy regions to complete the three generations of DAVISES. I have researched medical schools in the region and find that only the following Medical schools existed in that time frame: 1.. The College of Physicians and Surgeons of the Western District of New York. 2.. Kings and Columbia Schools of Medicine, established 1767. 3.. College of Physicians and Surgeons, established 1807-13 4.. Rutgers College (Queens College), established 1812-16 5.. New York School of Medicine, established 1830-33. Here is where I can use the help of anyone on this list who might have information they are willing to share with me: 1.. Where would I look to find information on students and instructors for any of the above medical schools in the time fram indicated? Is there a central information source for NY Physicians and Surgeons that would go back that far? Are the records of the above schools, since discontinued, contained in any local library, historical society, or other repository? 2.. Where would I find birth records for this region and timeframe, for both George Davis and Mary West? Family history speaks of an "Uncle Ben West" reportedly a Quaker from NY or PA. 3.. I have found a few reference sites related to the Continental Army Medical Corps, but does anyone know a reliable source to confirm his service to the Corps in the battle of 1812, as told in family legend? 4.. Anyone have any idea where I could inquire as to the legal records of the name change from DAVIES to DAVIS? Family lore insists it was done legally by James Lloyd (or James Timothy) Davis to demonstrate he was not sympathetic to the crown around the war of 1812. I very anxiously await any hints, clues, leads, or recommendations anyone might provide me. Thank you; Steven Davis 425 Lake Vista Lakeport, CA 95453 steve@economywebdesign.com steve@racerchaser.com

    3. Mark, I descend from Ludger Balthazard's oldest sister, Julia, who married Francis Brunelle. I've tracked the Balthazard family back to the mid-1700s and would be happy to share what I have. I'd also be very interested in learning more about the descendants of Ludger. I have birth dates for 9 children of Ludger Balthazard and Lucy Pillard, three of whom died as infants or young children. However, I don't recognize Cora - perhaps this was not her baptismal name? You are correct that Treffle and Ludger were brothers. Looking forward to hearing from you! Lynn

    2. Mark Balthazard
    3. I'm looking for any information about my grandfather Emile J. Balthazard, originally of Troy.  Census records indicate Emile was the youngest of 5 children, including Louise (who married Frank Canfield and remained in Troy), Louis, Cora (who married John Considine and also remained in Troy) and May (who moved to Lowell, MA and never married).  Emile's father Ludger Balthazard emigrated from Canada and lived in Troy from the late 1800's until his death in the 1920's.  Ludger also had siblings with families in Troy, including perhaps a brother Treffle who died in 1950 at the age of 91.   Emile worked for the NY Central Railroad as a blacksmith, married Grace Nonamaker of Albany and lived in Albany with her, her family, and their three children from the early 1920's until his death in 1948.    I would appreciate any stories or information about him or other family members, or suggestions about others who might have such information.   Thanks,   Mark

    3. Unfortunately, I won't have a chance to do this lookup, but found some other information that might be helpful. A Google search of his name shows him listed on a memorial page for the Class of 1946 at Amherst College with a death date of 6/5/1978 as you indicated. Access beyond the list of names requires a password which seems limited to the college's community. Also, there's a brief bio of him on Google Books in "Amherst College Biographical Record" at http://books.google.com/books?id=00kXAAAAIAAJ&pg=RA2-PA602&lpg=RA2-PA602&dq=Rev+Edward+Kronvall,Jr&source=bl&ots=HB4MsE31jw&sig=l4amzxnD5-d_8DkYceH5dd9dw2Q&hl=en&ei=fNBgS5jOOKH98QaIivDZBQ&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=8&ved=0CCQQ6AEwBw#v=onepage&q=Rev%20Edward%20Kronvall%2CJr&f=false ----- Original Message ----- From: "Sharon Henke" <sharhenke@charter.net> To: <nyrensse@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, January 27, 2010 3:46 PM Subject: [NYRENSSE] Obit lookup > Hi > > I am wondering if someone could do a look up for me at the Troy Public > Library for an obituary for Rev Edward Kronvall,Jr. I believe died on or > about June 5, 1978. 1. [NYRENSSE] New Data Base - St. Agnes Cemetery Interment Index
    2. Bill & Cathy McGrath
    3. ANNOUNCING NEW DATABASE BOOK 2 - INTERMENT INDEX ST. AGNES CEMETERY, MENANDS NEW YORK INTERMENT YEARS - 1883-1910 A. Book 2, part of a multi-volume set of Interment Records at St. Agnes Cemetery, Menands, NY, which includes 6,073 names, has now been added to the Troy Irish Genealogy website. This new data series of interment records list an individuals name, date of death and age at death. In a large number of records, the age is reported in years, months and days. It is interesting to note that there were 714 deaths of children under the age of 1 and 697 deaths of children ages 1 to 16. Those records that have no date of death are shown with the interment date and are identified by an asterisk (*). Some early deaths dating prior to 1883, are most likely re-interments from the State Street Burial site which was located at the site of present day Washington Park. Many of those in the Catholic section of this old cemetery were moved to St. Agnes Cemetery under an 1868 authorization. B. You can view these interment records by going to the Troy Irish Genealogy website at: www.rootsweb.com/~nytigs/ and click on PROJECTS and then click on ST. AGNES CEMETERY, MENANDS, NY - INTERMENT RECORDS. It should be noted that these records, like most of the TIGS data series, cover the general population in the area and are NOT restricted to Irish surnames. C. Researchers having relatives with a CAPITAL DISTRICT area connection, will be interested in these on-line, name searchable, online records of names of individuals who were interred in St. Agnes Cemetery. If you live in a nearby county or even further away, you might want to check out these names. Take a look at the data base, you never know what you will find. D. The TIGS website has a PRINTABLE FORM that can be used to request more information from the Albany Diocesan Cemeteries. Mailing instructions and fees (only $5.00) are on the request form. Additional items that may be available from the full interment record may include: 1. PLACE OF BIRTH: Some interesting statistics based on the place of birth reported in this interment book containing 6,073 individual records are: a. 2,922 were born in the City of Albany. Albany was the birthplace of the largest number of individuals in the interment records. Other Capital Region cities/towns showed the following for place of birth: Troy-68, Cohoes-49, West Troy (now Watervliet)-18, Watervliet-136, Greenbush-7, Green Island-11, Schenectady-9, Menands-10, Rensselaer-17, Colonie-17. b. 2,303 were born in Ireland. Ireland had the second largest number of individuals in the interment records. Other countries showed 173 born in the following countries: Austria-1, Belgium-3, Canada-46, England-20, France-5, Germany-50, Hungary-1, Italy-34, Poland-1, Scotland-8, Sweden-1, Switzerland-1, The Netherlands-2. c. 77 were born in the following states: Connecticut-9, Illinois-3, Kentucky-1, Maryland-1, Massachusetts-25, Michigan-2, New Jersey-15, North Dakota--1, Ohio-1, Pennsylvania-4, Rhode Island-1, Texas-1, Vermont-9, Virginia-3, Washington, DC-1. d. The remaining 256 records reflect births in various New York State cities/towns outside the Capital Region and 6 records identified only as "America or USA" and 24 records that show no place of birth. 2. PLACE OF DEATH: While a number of the area communities like Troy, Cohoes, Colonie, Green Island, Watervliet, Menands are reported as the place of death, the overwhelming number of deaths, 4,807 out of the 6,073 records, occurred in the city of Albany. A smaller number of deaths occurred in other areas of New York State or in other states. 3. RESIDENCE ADDRESS: The bulk of these interment records will show a street address with a house number. A lesser number may only show the street name or street intersections while some others may just mention the name of the city where the death occurred. 4. INTERMENT DATE: The date of interment in St. Agnes Cemetery may be another clue which will be helpful to genealogy and family researchers. 5. IN WHOSE LOT THEY ARE INTERRED: Most of these entries show the first and last name of lot owners and in some cases show multiple family names as the lot owners. 6. LOT NUMBER. 7. SECTION NUMBER. 8. UNDERTAKER: The reporting of the name of the undertaker was a later addition to the interment pages. Only 2,739 of the 6,073 records show the name of the undertaker. E. Stay tuned for Book 3 coming soon. This book, covering interments from 1886 to 1903 will have over 12,000 names. Hopefully you will find some of your ancestors listed in Book 2 of the Interment Index or in the various other data series on the Troy Irish Genealogy website. 3. Thanks, Cliff. I shared your comments with my fellow list admins. One of them responded that he uses the same convention that I use to clarify surname plurals: "I do appreciate the apostrophe issue though, and although not a grammar freak, I do like to avoid ambiguity where possible. That's where an often used genealogy (how many folk spell that incorrectly?) convention has a big advantage - the use of capital letters for family names. One of my names is CUMMING, and there is the similar, but nowadays distinct family of CUMMINGS. I can simply use CUMMINGs to denote the plural and be fairly confident to not be misinterpreted." The plural of a decade or century should not contain an apostrophe. For example, 1740's and 1900's are incorrect. They should be 1740s and 1900s. http://www.ohio.edu/publications/editor.html See 5.1. As another website said, "Apostrophes indicate possession or contractions, not plurality." An example of a contraction would be, "She graduated in '65." That is a proper use of the apostrophe with dates. While we are on the topic of plurals, if you are looking at a book of baptism records that lists the date of birth for each person, how would you express the plural of 'date of birth?' Would 'dates of birth' or 'date of births' be correct? The answer is the first one, 'dates of birth.' Finally, one more thing about surname plurals. Some surnames exist with an 's' at the end of them, whereas the 's' is lacking in a spelling variation of the same surname. Michael and Michaels are such an example. To place an 's' at the end of the Michael surname to make a plural could mislead the reader. In such a case, I always reword the sentence to avoid using the plural of the name. Instead of saying, "There are 25 Michaels buried in that cemetery," I would say, "There are 25 people by the surname of Michael buried in that cemetery." Or, "There are 25 people by the surname of Michaels buried in that cemetery." The reader should not get confused about the meanings of those sentences. Cliff Lamere
