    1. [NYRENSSE] Naturalization Records for Rensselaer Co.
    2. Pat Connors
    3. I just received a new book, Guide to Naturalization Records of the United States by Christina K. Schemer. Here is what she had to say about our county and NYS: NYS: The earliest naturalizations in NY were the colonial oaths of allegiance taken in 1664, 1673, 1687, and 1776. Letters of denization were also granted by the king and by colonial governors until 1700. After 1790 naturalization records in NY can be found in county courts, including the county supreme courts, circuit courts, courts of common pleas, and the courts of oyer(??) and terminer(??). city courts, mayor's courts, marine courts, and US circuit and district courts also performed naturalizations. Rensselaer County: (all films referenced are for the LDS Family History Libraries, the + mean this is the first of a series) Rensselaer County Court -Naturalization records, 1900-6, index, 1824-1908 (film 1304666+) -Declarations of intention, 1854-1906 (film 1304663+) -Petitions, 1903-6 (film 1304665+) -Final applications, 1896-1906 (film 1304666) Rensselaer County Court of Common Pleas -court minutes, 1843-57 (film 1304662+) this contains records of the court of common pleas, 1843-7 and records of the county court, 1847-57. -Index to naturalizations, 1843-57 (film 1304662). the records which are indexed by this film have not been filmed. Rensselaer County Justices' Court: -Naturalization certificates, 1844-72 (film 1434130) -Petitions, oaths of allegiance, and affidavits, 1827-1929 (film 1434126+) City of Troy Justices' Court -declarations of intention, 1844-72 (film 1304659+) -naturalizations certificates, 1844-69, index, 1844-72 (film 1304655+) Rensselaer County Supreme court -declarations of intentions, 1906-31 (film 1516633+) -declarations of intention, petitions, oaths of allegiance, 1903-31 (film 1513921+) The original records of all the above are at the Rensselaer County Courthouse in Troy. (I had the occasion to visit here in 1998. The records were in an attic with no supervision or air conditioning. Pages were ripped out of books. I was appalled and spoke to the personnel. Hopefully, all was filmed by LDS before the public got to these precious records.) Nial, Loretta M. city of Troy and Rensselaer County Court, 1816-1844 (Troy, NY: n.p., 1975, film 1304666). This contains naturalizations from original volumes in the Rensselaer County Clerk's office. Nial, Loretta M. Rensselaer county Court Naturalizations, volume 3, Book of Oaths, 1814-1843 (Troy, NY: Troy Public Library, n.d., film 1437398) Nial, Loretta M. Rensselaer county Court Naturalizations, Volumes 1 and 2 (Troy, NY: n.o., 1975, film 1304666). Note of caution: Please recheck the film numbers at the below site for accuracy. I may have made a mistake copying them. I have typed all that I know, so if you have any naturalization questions, please address them to the list so everyone can answer them. http://www.familysearch.org Pat Connors, Sacramento CA, listowner Siochain Leat (peace be with you) Researching: Connors/O'Connor, McEntee, Campbell, Flynn/O'Flynn, Smith, Phillips, Carter, Boyle, O'Rourke, Healey, Cullinan, Hoare, Todd, Owen, Booth, Gallagher, Fahey, Ryan, Haviland http://freepages.misc.rootsweb.com/~nymets http://www.familytreemaker.com/users/c/o/n/Pat-Connors/ mailto:nymets11@pacbell.net

    3. I am working the family of Matthew BREWER/BROUWER who first married Annatie OUDERKERK. They had 19 (?) children all born in Old Albany county New York, while living around Hoosick, New York. Annatie died between 1789 and 1790. Matthew then married Sarah WEST. They had 5 children. Matthew died about 1812. In the land records of Rensselaer Co. Ny in 1838 I have found the following: a Lina WILCOX, widow of Abraham WILCOX and daughter of Matthew BREWER, late of Hoosick, NY sells her interest in Matthew's land. She is listed as being of Oxford, Butler County, Ohio. a Levinus BREWER of Wayne, Ashtabula County, Ohio grandson of Matthew BREWER, late of Hoosick, NY and nephew of Lina WILCOX does the same. I am interested in contracting any one connected to or working on this family. Thanks Shirley

    3. The following is from: http://www.familysearch.org/sg/New_York.html Divorce Records Before 1787, divorce was practically nonexistent in New York. Some petitions for divorce were made to the governor or legislature, but only a few were granted. Records of divorces granted by acts of the legislature consist both of the legislative act and petitions that were sent to the legislature. Acts of divorce are indexed in the index mentioned under “Law and Legislation” in this outline. >From 1787–1847, divorces were recorded in chancery court records. Chancery court divorces are at the state archives or for the New York City area at: New York County Clerk's Office Division of Old Records 31 Chambers Street 7th floor New York, NY 10007 Telephone: 212-788-8580 or 212-566-5292 Fax: 212-385-4253 Since 1846, the supreme court has recorded divorce proceedings. Many people before 1966 found it easier to obtain a divorce out of state. Access to supreme court divorce records less than 100 years old is prohibited without judicial permission. You must obtain a court order to see a file. The actual trial records are sealed. The Family History Library has microfilmed very few divorce judgements. For New York County, only the index to divorce records has been microfilmed: New York County (New York). County Clerk. Index to Matrimonial Actions, 1784–1910. Salt Lake City: Genealogical Society of Utah, 1977. (FHL films 1017465–67; computer number 258893.)

    2. Maridel wrote: Does anyone know if people got divorced circa 1820-30 how they went about it, or if there are any divorce records for the REN/Troy/Berlin area from then existing in any archive ? I don't know much, but I do know that my gggm filed for divorce in 1866. She lived in Schodack, Renss Co, but filed for the divorce in Columbia Co - I don't know why she filed there. She died before the hearings on the divorce were completed. In fact, the only reason I know that the divorce was planned was that there were debts owed to her lawyer, so there is mention of the hearings in her estate papers. I checked at Hudson Court House in Columbia County, but they knew nothing of Divorce records from back then - they said to try at Albany because she didn't think there were any divorce records that far back in Columbia Co. I think I looked at the Albany Hall of Records - maybe even found divorce records there - but nothing for my ancestors. They might be a good place to look, especially if you are closer to the Troy/Albany area. Hope this helps a little. Good luck. Ned Schimminger, just outside Niagara Falls

    3. Since you got a death certificate, can I assume this person died late 1800's to present? Where they naturalized citizen (only good if they were not a child or wife)? If you are lucky, you might be able to find out from there. What exact time frame are you looking? If recent enough (last 70 years), Social Security is a good place. These are just the easy ones. You can try obits, cemetery records, marriage license, bibles, etc. And as we all know, you still may not find them ;) Hope this is not the case you you. good luck. > I have requested death certificates and only got the country of birth > (Canada). If I know when someone came to NYS from Canada and when they were > born how can I find out what part of Canada they were born in.

They moved to Michigan, Indiana, Wisconsin and finally settled in Iowa. I have had a lot of Jadwin leads but nothing to tie her in with any of them. Darlene Garrity deegee@humboldt1.com
