    1. [NYRENSSE] Re: Merger of RootsWeb & Ancestry
    2. After I responded to the Good News, Bad News, etc. I got a copy of my RootsWeb email back so if anyone is interested in hearing what RootsWeb says about this merger, please email me at Goodspsm@oneonta.edu & I'll forward the email. I don't want to take up space on the mailing list by putting it on the list. Sandy Goodpseed

    1. Re: [NYRENSSE] [NYFL] NEWS ALERT: MyFamily.com and RootsWeb.com join force
    2. Hi Ron, I got a news letter today from RootsWeb (wish I had saved it) as I'm a member and it said that RootsWeb will still stay FREE but MyFamily (which is Ancestry) are joining forces.... As a special offer from Ancestry, they are offering RootsWeb members a free 3 month subscription to Ancestry) until July 5th. I joined RootsWeb for $24 a year because I think that it's worth the amount considering all the free beenfits you get whether you join or not. After all, it costs money to put this information out. According to RootsWeb, the support from Ancestry will keep them running Free. Maybe someone else who got the RootsWeb letter can give more info. 2. For those new to the list. I am looking for info on the family on John Simpson/Phebe Card of Hoosick, NY. They had the following children - Clark, John R., Milo, Harriet, Maria, Emeline, and Angeline. John was a successful farmer. He died in 1860 and is buried in the Mapleton cemetary. Clark then moved to the Flushing, Michigan area. John was born in St Johns, Canada and Phebe was from Pownal, VT. I am also looking for info on that cemetary. 1. [NYRENSSE] research trip
    2. bmyers
    3. Hi Sharon, For what it's worth, I am planning the same trip (hopefully) in September. I know my cousin has found an enormous amount of information from the Troy and Albany libraries, as you mentioned. Our families were once from Troy and surrounding areas, as well. The only other thing I would suggest (and plan to do myself) is find out information on the cemetary/church your ancestors are buried in/belonged to. I know the church my family belonged to does not have the employees to do look-ups, so I'll have to do them myself most likely. If you plan to find information from cemetary records, do you know where they are? Do you know the hours of the place in which they're located, or if anyone will look up info. for you? You probably thought of this already, but if I didn't subscribe to this and other lists, I wouldn't have thought to do these things myself. 1. [NYRENSSE] Rootsweb announcement
    2. Pat Connors
    3. I received this today and didn't pass it on sooner because I assumed everyone who was on a rootsweb mailing list received one. RootsWeb-Announce@rootsweb.com writes: Good News, Bad News, Good News: The Merger of RootsWeb and MyFamily.com Good news: You, our list and board administrators, have played a very special role in making RootsWeb one of the largest and most popular sites on the Internet. In May, we had over 149 million page views (according to Nielsen NetRatings combined home and work statistics), sent over 155 million e-mails, and handled over two million downloads of files from the various archives hosted at RootsWeb. Everyone, take a bow! This is an incredible community of genealogists, and the advances we're all making in our research due to the sharing that occurs here is unprecedented. Without you, it couldn't have happened. Bad news: The more popular RootsWeb becomes, the more costly it is to simply stay alive and online. Expenses continue to exceed revenue. We ran up a truly scary loss last year. Without outside help, it's not clear how long we'd be able to go on like this. Good news: MyFamily.com (you may know them better as Ancestry.com) recognizes the importance of the genealogical community that has grown here at RootsWeb, and wants that community to continue to thrive. They're excited to provide the financial stability we need to ensure RootsWeb will be around for years to come. Brian and I are pleased by Ancestry.com's coming involvement with RootsWeb. Now we can all focus on helping each other on the mailing lists and message boards, uploading our GEDCOMs, and building Web pages to share our research. Better news: As a special thank you for the hard work you do, Ancestry.com is making the following offer: As a RootsWeb mailing list or board adminstrator, you are invited to visit Ancestry.com today and sign up for a FREE THREE MONTH SUBSCRIPTION with no obligation. You'll gain full access to all 600 million names in more than 2,500 databases. Go to the following address to begin your free subscription now: http://ancestry.com/subscribe/subscribetrialx.asp?sourcecode=G11BB <http://ancestry.com/subscribe/subscribetrialx.asp?sourcecode=G11BB> If you are already an Ancestry.com subscriber please call 1-800-595-1211 to extend your current subscription. Select option #2 - Order Service. You must activate your FREE subscription by July 5, 2000. More good news: Nothing will change for you, no one is going to charge you to use RootsWeb. You'll still find RootsWeb at www.RootsWeb.com. Everything you're used to using will still be here: the 19,000 mailing lists, the hundreds of millions of names in free genealogy databases, the interactive learning guides, the weekly RootsWeb Review and Missing Links, the numerous tools for tracing your family history, the tens of thousands of message boards, the thousands of independently authored web sites. RootsWeb will still support worthy genealogy projects and societies, such as the USGenWeb Project (www.USGenWeb.org), the Immigrant Ships Transcribers Guild (ISTG.rootsweb.com) and the FreeBMD Project (FreeBMD.rootsweb.com), and other groups that provide free genealogical resources. And don't worry, you won't be charged to access RootsWeb. No one will put your data on CD without your permission. Our Privacy Policy (http://www.rootsweb.com/rootsweb/pledge.html) and our Acceptable User Policy (http://www.rootsweb.com/rootsweb/aup.html) are unchanged. Other promises made over the years will continue to be honored. You'll still deal with the same RootsWeb volunteers and employees. In fact, most users won't notice any changes, except exciting new tools, more content, and better genealogical resources. 2. Sharon, I agree that New York State Library is the best place to visit for research on local counties. They have church records,DAR records, city directories, census records for all NY state etc. You can check the catalog for New York State Library at http:www.nysl.nysed.gov/index.html Margot At 04:00 AM 6/21/00 -0700, you wrote: >NYRENSSE-D Digest Volume 00 : Issue 134 > >Today's Topics: > #1 [NYRENSSE] Need Research Advice [Sharon Foley <sharona@fyiowa.infi.] > #2 [NYRENSSE] 2 seperate requests: Br [KariG28@aol.com] > #3 Re: [NYRENSSE] Need Research Advic ["Thomas Coonan" <tseanc@worldnet.a] > >Administrivia: >To unsubscribe from NYRENSSE-D, send a message to > > NYRENSSE-D-request@rootsweb.com > >that contains in the body of the message the command > > unsubscribe > >and no other text. 3. Hello All, Where can I find a breakdown of the wards of Troy during the period 1820-1900? I'm not sure if they changed in that time period. I'm looking for relatives in the 8th and 6th wards, and know I have relatives that lived on Bedford and 4th Sts. Not sure if these wards and streets coincide, but I'm trying to merge census index info. with city directory info. Thanks, Brooke Myers

    3. Rebecca Rector's list of some of the references to Slavery in NY makes me wish I had started this topic before my visit to Troy last month. I certainly would have spent more time at the NY State Library. Furthermore, Rebecca's Non-white population statistics for Renss. Co. are certainly very interesting. I would not have thought that slavery was so prevalent in NY State. With 56 slaves listed in Lansingburgh as late as 1814, it seems quite probable that my ancestor could have had one in 1800. Other persons responded directly to me when I first broached the topic of Slavery in Renss. Co. Some were of the opinion that Indentured Servants were included in the Slave Category as they were certainly not "Free" as all the other column headings are labeled. I am trying to find some documentation on this point. Brad Miter

    3. NY abolished slavery in 1827, under gradual emancipation law. Children born after that date were free, other children were freed when they reached 18 or 21 (not sure which); there were other provisions too. Here's a web site that has some info on slavery: http://innercity.org/holt/chron_1790_1829.html Rebecca Rector Troy, NY At 11:43 PM 6/17/00 -0400, you wrote: >When was slavery banned in NYSE?
