    1. [NYRENSSE] FOR the Gentleman whowas interested in the 1850 Quebec divorce
    2. Maridel Crawford-Brown
    3. Re: a DIVORCE in QUEBEC circa 1850. Several weeks ago I had queried the list about where to find divorce records for Ontario (and on another list for NY.) In any case, from one of these lists, a gentleman answered me, with some information. He also sent me some names he was hoping to find a trace of. I *did* have the names, but had several note/computer problems along the way and all is now lost. However, I *did* check the CANADA GAZETTE for 1850 in which legal notices are /were published. Only two divorces were published that year. 1. James ARCHIBALD of Chatham had filed for divorce from his wife Jane, "formerly Jane McNAUGHTON, she having been guilty of adultery since my marriage to her." This was dated 9th July 1849, and appeared in the Gazette under "Applications to Parliament" from then until the issue # 465, Saturday, May 18, 1850, James' application no longer appears. 2. Canada Gazette, # 473, Sarah Jane CRAIG of Harwich applied the 20th June 1850 "for an act dissolving the marriage contract between Andrew CRAIG and myself and absolving me from the same, in consequence of his total neglect of me for the last year past, and his disregard of the said marriage contract." These Gazettes are not indexed in the volumes. I closely read 1850's issues, and scanned 1849, in which no divorce applications seemed to appear. These applications were published in each issue after the first in which they appeared- I suppose until the divorce was granted. This Gazette covers many legal situations in Quebec, and eastern Canada as well as Ontario, particularly wills, bankruptcies and land sales for taxes. Some very interesting cases were to be seen. Regrettably the Quebec Gazette, which might be more useful, is missing the 1850's issues at the university here (or perhaps did not publish then?). I also looked in the first few months of the (rather dull) Quebec Chronicle newspaper, and did not see any legal notices (although there are BMD's). Sorry not to have been of more help. Regards Maridel Crawford-Brown

    3. Can anyone tell me what became of the Grace Methodist Church on 7th Ave. in Troy? How would I go about locating records from that church? They were, the great-grandparents, Philip & Lizzie Muller. Albany County recently placed on-line their index of Naturalization Records. Does any one know if the same has been done in NYC and what is the web address? Thank you. James H. 1. [NYRENSSE] Linen Mills
    2. Barb Baxter
    3. I have some ancestors who were "flax drawers" first in Scotland and then in Schaghticoke. They seemed to leave Rensselaer County some time after 1880 and go to other places. One went to Webster MA to work in a Linen Mill and some others went to Providence, RI, right around 1900. Were there lots of things shutting down about that time? My g.g.grandfather (no relation to the Scottish flax workers) had a mill and shirt factory in Brunswick which was right on the Quackenkill. The City of Troy diverted the Quackenkill for a city water supply and he went bankrupt about 1885. Barb Baxter http://www.pinehurst.net/genealogy/

    3. I have just revised and greatly expanded the "Guide to Albany Area Genealogical Resources" which I wrote last summer. It now contains information on 27 sites in six counties (Albany, Columbia, Rensselaer, Greene, Schenectady, and Montgomery). I tried to have it available at the beginning of the summer for those of you who were travelling to the area to do research. However, I was too busy trying to set up a website on which to post it. The Guide contains information about each site, including address, phone number and website URL. It also tells whether searches will be done by the staff of each facility. http://www.members.global2000.net/~clifflamere/Guide.htm Cliff
