Hi all, Just got off the Cemetary Records site and found it great! Found a relative that has been a mystery for a while. He is buried in St Peter's cemetary. Under the notes section, there is the town of Brunswick mentioned. I have two questions: where is St Peter's Cemetary and where is Brunswick (the town is not listed in the AAA book)? Thanks Jay
In regard to the condition of stones in any cemetary. I have just learned that upkeep of stones is the responsibility of descendants and not that of the cemetary. The cemetary is responsible only for upkeep of the cemetary itself. Mowing, clearing brush etc. If the cemetary is inactive then the Township should keep it cleared unless privately owned such as church cemetaries. MG
The Lost Baptisms were performed (1807-1834) by Rev. John Calvin Toll while he was pastor of three Reformed Dutch Churches of Montgomery Co., NY. The records consist of eight handwritten pages that had been donated to the Schenectady Co. Historical Society by the Toll family. They were in bad shape, some names and dates destroyed by scotch tape. The Society gave me permission to post an INDEX, but not the transcribed records. This was disappointing, but not unreasonable. As I was told, if they had all of their specialty items posted, people would not have to visit the Society and it would cease to exist. They charge a $5 daily visitor's fee, except to members. The index is now posted on my website. Look for it in "Vital Records - Births & Baptisms" at: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~clifflamere/ People are sending me obituaries, wills, old photographs, and images of an old family bible. I have the promise of some unpublished cemetery records and some other transcribed records. Won't you look at my site? If you like what you see, please consider letting me post some records for you. The counties that my site covers are Albany, Columbia, Rensselaer, Schenectady, Greene, Schoharie, and Montgomery. Saratoga Co. will be added in two or three weeks. Cliff
On the Rensselaer list under cemeteries I found a number of my relatives buried in Mountain View. It would appear that it is near or in Schodack. Can anybody tell me about this cemetery and where it is located? Thanks for your help
Does anyone have any info on the Card family of Ren County. My ancestor, John Simpson, married Phebe Card of Pownal, VT in 1815. I know that 2 Cards, Samuel and Thomas (I think) lived in Hoosick around 1810. I am trying to figure out if they were any relation to Phebe. I am wondering if my John lived with the Card family for a while as a child. A John Simpson appears in Hoosick in 1790 but I can't find him in 1800 or 1810. My ancestor, John, is in Hoosick as a child (around 1788-89) but I can't find him until 1820. I think the 1790 John is his father but can't prove it. Timothy D. Simpson
Anybody know who maintains the Mapleton cemetary or has the records for the graves. My ancestor's grave (John Simpson d:1860) is in bad shape. You can hardly read the stone. Past phone numbers sent to me were incorrect. The cemetary is about 6-7 miles west of the Vermont line. Thanks Timothy D. Simpson,
I have had direct contact with both St. Mary's church and cemetery both places were extremely helpful and nice. The Church has much of its info indexed and on computer, it is very easy for them to find records (I believe this only pertains to marriages and christenings). I have exact dates for three relatives which had masses at St. Mary's when they died, but I have not been able to get any info on them. ...But while I was asking about these deaths, the lady did find a marriage that I didn't even ask for. The Cemetery has a book with names by date of burials and they have index cards of plots by owners. The lady (Sandy I believe), is very nice. She will do searches if you have a small enough time period. She also went the extra step and found a bunch of names that I didn't even know were buried there.(Its good to have uncommon surnames ;) I too am interested in finding out what St. Joseph's Cemetery has for info. I walked the Cemetery when I was back in NY and found the grave for my GGgrand uncle (thanks to the Cemetery data on the Renss. genweb page) and would like to know if they have more info. BTW, when you enter the Cemetery, there is a big map of the place. Its past the Caretakers building if you go in straight. Good Luck. ----- Original Message ----- From: "bmyers" <bmyers@du.edu> To: <NYRENSSE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, August 20, 2000 11:39 AM Subject: [NYRENSSE] church info. > Hello Listers, > > Quick question...as I prepare to head back to NY and visit family both alive > and in cemetaries, I'm curious if anyone who has ancestors in St. Joe's > Cemetary and St. Mary's (both in Troy) knows the answer to this question. > Where are the cemetary records for both of these places at? Way back in May I announced to this list the publication of a website called The POORHOUSE STORY (which is a clearinghouse for information about 19th century American poorhouses)at http://www.poorhousestory.com (Once there, you can click on POORHOUSES BY STATE, then NEW YORK STATE POORHOUSES, and finally click on RENSSELAER on the table of NY Counties.) At that time, I said I would soon be publishing to the RENSSELAER County page the excerpts from two government reports (one done in 1824 and the other in 1857). Well...I stalled for 3 months...but now I want to tell you about that material and invite you to visit the site to read more if you are interested. The delay was a result of my own discomfort about publishing really disturbing material. Finally, I had to remind myself to be true to my committment to honest non-censured historical reporting. As you can read on the homepage and on the history page, NY established a county poorhouse system in the early 1820s. Not every county immediately participated (some were initially excepted from the requirement to do so)... but by 1857 almost every county had such an institution. And the institution was in trouble; in some cases the troubles were financial, in almost all cases people were beginning to doubt that the poorhouses were accomplishing their purpose, and in a few cases the system was considered abusive. So the state ordered an investigation in 1857. The conditions reported for the Rensselaer county poorhouse were horrendous. I have since done a lot of reading about the history of the county and think I better understand the context of the times .. and can appreciate the goodness that has often manifested itself in the history of Rensselaer County. I do not want to get involved in a debate (and won't participate in one) but I think the economic status of the vast majority of people who lived in the county between 1824 and 1857 needs to be taken into consideration. Since most were virtually tenant farmers, paying rent to a landed aristocracy yet having to pay themselves the taxes on the land they farmed (while the political power to set public policy was still largely under the control of that same aristocracy)... it seems unlikely that there was a very empowered public will or ability to offer very generous assistance to paupers. In the excerpt from the YATES Report you will find a rather detailed survey of how the poor were being dealt with prior to the passage of the Poorhouse Law in 1824. (You will also find an emphatic statement of the prevalent attitute toward the poor.) Then you will find the report of the legislative investigators in 1857. You will also find the names of the people living in the poorhouse in Troy in 1855. While the subject matter is upsetting, I hope you will find The POORHOUSE STORY website enlightening and helpful to you in your genealogical searches. Perhaps if those of you with more information about the later decades of the poorhouse can submit such information .. that may help us temper the pain we feel when we survey the earlier inhumane era. Sincerely, Linda Crannell (aka=The Poorhouse Lady)
Hi, Does anyone know if there is a Civil War Cemetary or monument in Troy? If so, is there an address where I can get more information, such as those who are listed or buried there? Thanks, Jackie
Brooke I dont know to much about the records ect ect but from experinence take a video camera or regular camera take pictures of all gravesites and if possible even take a little hand held recorder and talk about your experince there and what you see,names..dates ect ect. Jackie Hello Listers, Quick question...as I prepare to head back to NY and visit family both alive and in cemetaries, I'm curious if anyone who has ancestors in St. Joe's Cemetary and St. Mary's (both in Troy) knows the answer to this question. Where are the cemetary records for both of these places at? Is there a caretaker still for St. Joe's and Mary's? The secretary at St. Joe's Church did not know about the cemetary records, and I haven't been able to speak with anyone at St. Mary's church yet. If anyone knows, I'd really appreciate your help. Also, thanks for the response to my last census abbrev. question. I went back and verified that the letters next to the names (NOT in place of the names) on the census are "dg," and not "do." I still have no idea what this stands for. Thanks, Brooke Myers

Brooke, St. Mary's burial information is available at the cemetery office at that location. Most of the information is on indexed burial cards. I have not yet found names of parents or next of kin to be listed on those cards. The staff there is quite helpful and will guide you to a particular gravesite if their time permits. Good Luck. Carla

Brooke, When I was at St. Joseph's Rectory in 1998, I believe the secretary's name was Bernedette. She was extremely helpful and had index cards for every grave plot and made copies of them for me. At the cemetery, there is a caretaker but they were out of maps but he too was extremely helpful and gave me directions to the gravestones. Good luck, it is a pretty cemetery. I haven't been to St. Mary's yet. -- Pat Connors, Sacramento CA Siochain Leat (peace be with you) "she-a-chon lat" with a slight aspirate on the "chon" Researching: Connors/O'Connor, McEntee, Campbell, Flynn/O'Flynn, Smith, Phillips, Carter, Boyle, O'Rourke, Healey, Cullinan, Hoare, Todd, Owen, Booth, Gallagher, Fahey, Ryan, Haviland http://freepages.misc.rootsweb.com/~nymets http://www.familytreemaker.com/users/c/o/n/Pat-Connors/ mailto:nymets11@pacbell.net
I am still trying to find the family of Hannah Crapo who married Elijah Utter. Here is what I have found in the county thus far: NYGBR-Peter Crapoo of Schaghticoke, Johnstons Co. Van Schaicks Reg. Rochester MA and died Rensselaer Co. NY. (I thought I saw his cemetery record but cannot locate it at present). He married Elizabeth James - I believe he is the father of the Hannah I am trying to document as they had a daughter Hannah-I believe mine was probably born 1770-75?? Any help is greatly appreciated. FYI - James SPENCE mentioned below married in Schaghticoke Jessie MOIR, b. 27 Jul 1860, Dundee, Scotland, daughter of David MOIR and Margaret BIRNIE. They are all buried in Elmwood Cemetery in Schaghticoke. I would be interested in hearing from any of their descendants. Hi, Where can I write (snail mail address please) to obtain information on my g.g.grandfather (Ulysses Lovett) and the circumstances under which he placed his son (George Lovett) in the Troy Orphan Asylum in 1863? George was indentured out to a George Sheldon of Willsboro,NY. Where can I get more information about this whole process and this situation inparticular?
