    3. A couple of months ago I phoned the Albany Co. Hall of Records. They sent me a piece of paper listing some counties of Vermont that were at one time part of Albany Co. Vermont today is two counties wide all along its length, as I recall. The counties that the paper named were all EASTERN counties of VT. Therefore, if the eastern counties were part of Albany Co., the western counties (closer to NY) must also have been, but there was no mention of them on the sheet. Cliff

    3. Thanks everyone for your guidance. I neglected to mention that in 1800 they were listed in the Petersburgh census, and that's where they remainto this day. I believe that the people never moved, just the state lines. Now, is there a record of Land Grants that would help me pinpoint the place? The name is Grogan, listed as Grovin in the 1800 census. I understand that there were ownership conflicts between the Dutch settlers and the "English" who came after, is there a record of this? Thanks again y'all, you've been most helpful. Eve

    2. Hoosick was listed as Albany County in 1790 because Rensselaer County was not formed from Albany County until 1791. As Holly said Hoosick is now in Rensselaer County. The so-called "1790" Vermont census was taken in 1791 after the State of Vermont was created. It is not unusual to find people in 1790 in both VT and NY. They may have moved, and, there are the usual boundry problems, be it state, county, town. Marie

    3. I have looked at that 1800 census and I think some of these people may be related. What family name are you researching? Or names since there was a change? My Job Green was basically an orphan but his mother-in-law was a Bailey and his grandmother-in-law was a Straight and I saw some of them there. It took me about 10 years to figure out who he was and another 5 to place his wife (Vaughn) so I've looked at lots of stuff. At 11:14 PM 9/2/00 EDT, Cathy Pouls wrote: >Ditto! Here's #3! 3. I have the same thing - the boundary between VT and NY moved approximately 8 miles east when VT became a state in 1791. My ancestor's children were registered in Pownal Twp from 1777 to 1791 and I think there may have been 2 more, but they are not registered anywhere. They also were in the 1790 census in Hoosick. As nearly as I can figure, New York laid claim to the strip of land before VT was a state and so the NY census takers just went there. Interestingly enough, my ancestress gives her birthplace in different censuses (censi?) as both NY and VT. When she was aged and living with a son her birthplace is given as RI where both her parents were born. I understand that the Battle of Bennington was fought on ground that is now in NY. What is your ancestor's name? Mine is Green. At 06:59 AM 9/2/00 -1000, Eve wrote: >Hi, everyone. > >I have a ?? about boundaries of the states of NY and VT. 3. It must have to do with changing borders over time. Hoosick is now in Rensselear County, NY, not Albany County, which is adjacent. Pownal is still in Bennington Coutny, Vt. The Pownal and Hoosick are less than 1/2 hour apart. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Eve" <grogan@maui.net> To: <cookis@earthlink.net> Sent: Saturday, September 02, 2000 5:35 PM Subject: PML Search Result matching Hoosick > ============================================================ > A result of your requested PML search. 2. OKAY everyone this is rediculous.. I suddenly know why LDS and FTM won't allow you to attach corrections to the material that is incorrect. I think both people do us a service and they should have resolved it between them not us.. I do appreciate people gracefully letting me know when my information is not accurate and needs changed. And yes sometimes the information we used no matter where from is not correct. UNFORTUNATELY. Can we please go back to genealgoy here, I liked this list and enjoyed the data shared, no fun now. We have enough stress in lifes without having it carry over unto our net area too. Thanks to all GOD BLESS everyone... SusiCP

    1. [NYRENSSE] Here's To The Ladies!
    2. Linda Wilbur
    3. I would like to put my two cents in here in praise of all the DAR ladies who have done so much historical transcription over the years. Their work appears in libraries all over the United States. Legions of genealogists and family researchers have been helped by them. Preserving historical records is something that the DAR takes very seriously. I am a descendant of three early Albany/Rensselaer Co. families...Weatherwax, Francisco and VanDerCook. I am also an adoptee. As soon as I was reunited with my birthmother in 1983, I quickly learned that researching my roots was not going to be an easy task. Although the family still resides in the Michigan county that my great-great grandfather originally settled in, he died in 1867 at a relatively young age. My great-great grandmother died five years later. If there were ever any family records, they disappeared as the children from my great-great grandmother's three marriages dispersed...seemingly to the four winds! It took me from 1983 to 1987 to get the family origins pinned down to Upper Albany/Rensselaer Co., NY. Needless to say, it was very frustrating work. In 1987, my husband and I were finally able to travel to New York. An afternoon spent at the New York State Library in Albany provided a crucial turning point in my research. If it hadn't been for a DAR survey of the Old Cooksborough Cemetery, I would never have located the burial sites of my Revolutionary War ancestor...not to mention the interments of many other ancestors who lie at rest in that historic old burying ground! Did I find mistakes on that survey? You betcha! But the boost my research got from that particular piece of work alone was incredible. I also found DAR transcriptions of the Gilead Lutheran and Schagticoke Reformed Dutch church records to be invaluable. My ability to document my line as a whole was greatly aided by the fact that an original Weatherwax Family Bible was transcibed for the DAR in 1931 and made available to me through the DAR Family Bible Records on Microfilm. Although this particular transcription contained one HUGE error, my cousin's husband got around it very neatly when he researched her family. Happily, the original bible just recently resurfaced and I now have a color copy of the pages that confirm our research to be correct. I was successful in using these DAR transcriptions because I checked, rechecked...then checked again. One thing needs to be remembered: These are NOT primary records! Any genealogical researcher worth his or her salt should know that they need to take ANYTHING like this with a proverbial grain of salt. Please remember that the internet is a very new development. Nevertheless, people have been doing genealogy...GOOD genealogy...for generations. It is easy to criticize when you have the newest, up-to-date technological marvel at your disposal. DAR transcribed records have been of immense value to tens of thousands of genealogical researchers over the years. For this reason, this transcription work (and the women who do it) should be approached with the greatest respect always. It wasn't so terribly long ago that they were the only show in town. Oh, yes. Despite the fact that I am an adoptee and most of the records I had at my disposal were DAR transcriptions, I was accepted for membership into the society in 1991. And, yes, the documentation for my lineage was...and remains...totally correct! Linda Wilbur, B.S. Gene-Us Genealogical Research Homer, Michigan

    3. I wonder if someone could point me in the right direction to find a burial or information about a person who died in April 1987 (don't know the date). Willard Ralston was listed as living at 11510 Baldwin, Nassau, NY (as per the Roots.com list of SSN). I have a number of questions about this family but I thought it best that I finally locate him as being with you. He was born on 24 October 1907, his father being Gavin and his mother Hattie Banta. Thanks in advance Elizabeth Leicester, UK

    3. I am trying to find an entry in the 1910 or 1920 Census for my gr-grandfather and his family. Because the family history center in my area is closed at this time I am unable to find out or order the film I might need. The information I have about my gr-grandfather is as follows: Hans S. Skau, he lived in the Lansingburgh area of Troy, NY. His wife was Andrea Elvira Skau, children Alice, Elizabeth and Howard. In 1909-1911 he lived at 331 Fifth Ave, later he lived at 229-6th Ave., Troy, NY. He was born Sept 15, 1882, Kolding, Denmark, died Feb 25, 1949, Troy, NY. I am trying to find out place and date of birth for his wife, Andrea E. and information about their Citizenship. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time. Valerie, Tucson, AZ
