    3. I would like to suggest interested parties write a letter to the diocesan office (perhaps the archivist) about the condition and availability of all the records in the diocese. Maybe a preservation plan could be put into place at that level that would apply to all the parishes. I have found that every parish and indeed every pastor has different policies and different attitudes regarding their old records. Perhaps the diocese needs to get a handle on the problem. The Canadian church has already done this and I've tracked my family back to the 1700's because their records are in such good shape.

    3. About the Catholic Church and Mormon records: I have heard (mind you not from any official sources) that the Catholic Church does not like the idea of people who are obviously baptized into the Roman Catholic Faith being re-baptized and sealed in the Mormon faith. That may be an individual Priest's or Diocesan choice, but I have heard that before. If they get put in the IGI, that's because Temple Ordinances have been done for them. I'm not an expert on this, but heard it as far back as 15 years ago when the CompuServe genealogy forum was going strong. Barb Baxter http://www.pinehurst.net/genealogy/

    1. [NYRENSSE] recent visit to Troy
    2. bmyers
    3. Hello Everyone! I returned yesterday from NY where I spent two days in Troy researching all I could about my family lines. Obviously it was no where near the amount of time I would've liked to have spent, but I was able to find some information and visit some places I'm sure my ancestors did. I have a few questions for you...the first is regarding the St. Joe's (in Troy) church records. I spent much of one whole day looking at the old records, but was really disturbed when Bernadette (the helpful church secretary) told me that the head pastor decided to seal the records up for good sometime in the near future. Apparently nobody will be able to see them anymore due to their failing conditions, and the apparent disturbance to the normal church functions that we genealogists pose to them. I spoke with Bernadette about this for a long time, but unfortunately she was not a very sympathetic ear as she does not like genealogy. I offered to transcribe the records one book at a time from Latin to English, but she didn't give it any thought (understandable so, I guess). Neither of the priests were available to speak with, but she indicated that it was their idea to seal the records. She also told me that Salt Lake has called to microfilm the records, but due to apparently personal reasons the church has refused to let them microfilm the records...she said something to the effect that a former St. Joe's priest converted to the Mormon faith. I got the impression that this happened after they contacted the Church to copy the records, but I'm not sure. When I was looking for some records, it seems as if some of the oldest books were missing and/or stolen. Anyway, I am really interested in doing something to dissuade the priest(s) from prohibiting future access to these valuable records. I'm not sure what I can do from here in Denver, as it is easier to hang up on a person on the phone. If anyone else is interested or disturbed about this, I'd love suggestions and maybe some help or support in keeping these records available. Feel free to e-mail me. Lastly, I visited St. Joe's cemetary and found some stones separated from the cemetary by a grass road and drainage from nearby apartments. The caretaker does not have the resources to clear up this area, as this area looks beyond help. There are some beautiful large stones in good condition not visible from the rest of the cemetary. I dressed in fisherman's boots, rubber coat, work gloves and goggles to force my way through the heavy growth of trees and brush. I believe this is considered part of the swamp area, but not the stones concealed up on the small hill. My family has never seen these stones before, but I was always told some family was buried back there. I found one stone (it was difficult to see the large stones unless you were right near them due to the heavy growth) with the Ryan surname. Cornelius Ryan and his family was buried there. I took pictures, but had difficulty finding the room to write...the brush was so bad. If anyone is interested in the info. from this stone, when I get the pictures developed I'll pass on this information. I'm sure no human has set foot there for at least the past 50 years it is so badly overgrown. Brooke Myers

    1. [NYRENSSE] IGI
    2. Barb, The IGI at the Family History Library has three kinds of records. The one you refer to is accurate in that LDS members research their family and then have them baptized posthumously and the records go into the IGI. The second record they have in the IGI are family trees that you or I might submit of our own families - just family trees without any LDS attachment. The third record the IGI has is the information from the countless numbers of microfilms they have made around the world. I think I might have found the baptismal record of my gr.grandfather in Germany through the IGI and have looked at the microfilm where that record was obtained. It was the parish baptismal record in the original writing which had been microfilmed. The names were then transcribed by LDS volunteers and placed into the IGI along with the film number for a handy and clear reference. 2. Cliff Lamere
    3. I have just posted the number of Dutch Reformed Churches in each NY county for the years 1850, 1860, and 1870. The information is in column format so that it is easy to see changes that occurred in a county during that period of time. To see this web page, go to: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~clifflamere/ In the Table of Contents, click on Churches. Then, click on Dutch Reformed Churches in NY 1850-1870 At this point, I don't know the names of the churches in those counties. Cliff

    1. [NYRENSSE] CAREY/CARY in Greenbush in 1830's & 1840's
    2. Hello all------ I'm new to your list. My Great Grandfather, William CAREY/CARY indicated on his declaration of intent to become a citizen that, in 1835, he was living in Coeymans, NY, having arrived there in 1830, but it was his intent to settle in Greenbush in Renssalear County. Does anyone on this list have access to the 1830 or 1840 census for Greenbush? In 1830, William would have been single, or possibly married to Margaret, and may have had Margaret's mother living with them. By 1840, they would have added Patrick, b. 1833, Robert b. 1834, and Richard b. 1839 to the family. They ultimately emigrated to Wisconsin in 1854 [Aurora, Waushara County, now called Auroraville]. Appreciate any and all advice on how best to try to find them on these census records? With all good wishes, James J. Carey Washington, DC Great Grandson of William Carey and Margaret Kilroy

    3. I have posted some information about Dutch-born persons recorded in US censuses for 1870, 1880, 1890, 1900, 1920, and 1960. Censuses prior to 1870 did not ask about country of birth. For each year, I give the US total population, the Dutch-born total population in the US (information from some states not available, however), the total NY population, the total Dutch-born population in NY, the number of Dutch-born people in the NY counties containing the highest numbers of Dutch-born, and the number of Dutch-born in the counties covered by my website. To access this information, go to my website: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~clifflamere/ In the Table of Contents, click on Censuses. The article you are looking for is the first one, "Dutch in NY Censuses 1870-1960". Cliff

    1. [NYRENSSE] WHITE family
    2. Looking for information on ICHABOD WHITE and family. He was born in 1727 in E. Hoosic, MA, m. RHODA HOAG in 10/1784. Parents were WILLIAM WHITE and SARAH HARRIS. Ichabod served in the Rev War and enlisted in 4/1777 at PETERSBURG, RENSSELAER CO, NY, served in Capt. Isaac Warren's Co, Col. Bailey's MA regiment. Ichabod and Rhoda had at least two children, my gg grandfather, DAVID S. WHITE and PHOEBE WHITE. Phoebe married a Thomas Snow in Chenango Co, NY. David married Eleanor Davis in Norwich, McKean Co, PA. The family removed from that area prior to 1807 when they purchased land in Norwich, Chenango Co, NY. David's son Arvin Clark White's death certificate indicates that David was born in Greenwich, Washington Co, NY on 12/7/1802. I haven't found much info on people living in Petersburgh this early. Any suggestions about where to search? thanks for any help. Will be more than happy to share family info I have with others. I have a substantial amount, but I'm trying to fill in all the spaces now. kathie

    1. [NYRENSSE] CATACOOK?
    2. Would anyone know of a place called CATACOOK that would have existed around 1800 in Rennselaer Co? Could this be a phonetic spelling for Schaghticoke? What marriage records in the area might still exist from around 1800? I have begun the search for information on my 4th gt-gr-parents Ann IRELAND and James Fones GARDNER. I have no hard evidence of their birthplaces or marriage location (so these may not be accurate) but I've listed what has been passed to me. Would appreciate to hear from anyone with possible connections or knowledge about where "Catacook" might have been located. Ann IRELAND married (1) James Fones GARDNER in Catacook?, Rensselaer Co., New York. He was born Bet. 1775 - 1790 in Long Island, New York, and died 1818 in Middleport, Meigs Co., Ohio. She married (2) Mr. MERRY. She married (3) Mr. MULFORD. He was born in Fitchburg, Worcester Co., Massachusetts. (Ann Ireland Mulford may have moved to Worcester Co., MA) Children of ANN IRELAND and JAMES GARDNER are: 1) Capt. George Washington GARDNER, b. 1809, Middleport, Meigs Co., Ohio; d. 1862; m. (1) Hanna Anna KNOPP, 03 Nov 1831, Gallia Co., Ohio; b. 1814, Virginia; d. 1839, Cheshire, Gallia Co., Ohio; m. (2) Mary Rebecca PECK, 06 Aug 1839, Mason Co., West Virginia; b. 1815; d. 1890, Mason Co., West Virginia. 2) Emmeline GARDNER, b. Bef. 1818; m. Benjamin RIDER. 3) James Fones GARDNER, Jr., b. 1. [NYRENSSE] Revolutionary War Pension List
    2. Cliff Lamere
    3. A webpage called "Revolutionary War Pension and Bounty-land-warrent Application Files" can be found on the LDS site. It is part of what they call their FAMILY HISTORY LIBRARY CATALOG RECORD. It is found at: http://www.familysearch.org/sg/CCF1/78932.html The information given says that there were about 80,000 applications. An alphabetical list of about 5300 names is listed on this webpage which I believe to be primarily a list of microfilms available. Two names are listed for each line. I believe these are the names of the first and last men whose applications appear on the microfilm. If I am correct, there are about 2650 microfilms with about 30 applications on each one. I imagine that an application would be several pages long. The serviceman would have to prove that he served, and he might have to list family members in case they had a right to collect benefits after his demise. Cliff

    2. I have been interested in the discussion of Vermont/NY borders. Along those same lines I wonder if anyone on the list has information on the various patents in Rensselaer County. I still have a small piece of land which is supposed to be part of lot # 46 of the Hoosick Patent. How could I find more about this patent. Who would someone have purchased this land from? Where would I find a record of the deed? I have been to Rensselaer County Courthouse and to Albany Hall of Records without success. Margot

    1. [NYRENSSE] Albany County Boundaries
    2. Thanks, Cliff, See: http://www.rootsweb.com/~nyalbany/formed.html for a lot of information on the NY counties formed from Albany. Also, look at the separate towns at www.rootsweb /~nyrensse/ for more information. Part of Washington Co. included some of Vermont as I think has been discussed. Cliff is right, Vermont and NH were part of Canada, then part of NY or MA. If memory serves me right (it doesn't always), Canada used to be part of Massachusetts, even; and in the earliest years of settlement, Massachusetts was called Canaday (sp?). Also, the land east of the Hudson River was going to be part of New England, not New York State. I probably have printouts of this information somewhere, but it's a bit off subject. Marcia >
