    3. I, too got that one and didn't even bother to go there. There is a site called SpamCop http://www.spamcop.net/ where you can go to report unsolicited email - I use it and have been very satifsied (free service available). When you report the spam to the people that they recommend (automatically) the spammers's Internet Service Provider and/or domain hoster get a letter from SpamCop. As an ISP and Domain Hoster, the minute we get any report of a spammer, they are gone. We terminate their contracts. Most ISPs do this. Thus the spammer has to keep moving all the time. I did send that piece of spam along with others that I receive from genealogy sites. I got one the other day asking me to go fill out a questionnaire about their site and on that questionnaire I replied that I didn't patronize sites that spammed me. There is also a company called BrightMail which offers free anti-spam software for your individual mailbox http://www.brightmail.com/ It works! It collects all the spam in one place and you can go look at it if you choose or it will just disappear in 30 days. Spam is the #1 complaint of Internet Service Providers and has increased at a great rate just over the last month. 2. Cliff Lamere
    3. Susan Mulvey's transcription of the 1757-1767 Noble Town Proprietors Meetings is now located on my website under "Other Lists of People". http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~clifflamere/ It makes for interesting reading. I have summarized the contents at the beginning of the webpage. Noble Town was in the present-day Columbia Co. of NY. It was the subject of a border conflict, since Massachusetts also claimed the land. Cliff

    2. Brooke Myers
    3. Hello! I saw some information regarding the upcoming (Nov. 13) increase in price to request military records from the Nat'l. Archives. I found an ancestor in one of Ancestry.com's military databases for the Civil War soldiers. It gives information such as dates of duty, rank, company, etc. I could not, however, find a pension file for this person. Has anyone ever heard of a soldier "selling" off" his pension for a lump sum? I won't even guess that's why the file I'm looking for is missing, but a friend brought that possibility up to me, which I've never heard of. Is this a legal transaction? More importantly, given the soon-to-be large price of pension and military records from the Archives, I'd like to request the military records for this ancestor. Given that I do not have a file number for this person, I'm wondering if the NATF-80 is the correct way to go to search for any existing files on this person. I may just go ahead and fill out an NATF-80 before it gets too late, but if anyone has alternate suggestions as to how I might obtain Civil War files/information on this person, I'd like to know. 3. Today I recieved an UNSOLICITED email spam offering membership on familydiscovery.com for 59.99. Please be advised that this site is NOT a genealogy data site but simply a list of links to other FREE INTERNET RESOURCES made by honest hardworking volunteers that you can find yourself by using search engines. This site will also link to Cyndi's List, Ancestry.com, Dear Myrtle, etc. but has NO ORIGINAL INFORMATION! Please don't be fooled by the sales pitch. If you wish to complain to the owner of the site, here is the address: AboEnterprises@PRODIGY.NET Maybe you should write from an anonymous email account so they don't get your number. I presume they got mine from the various message boards I have posted to. Aloha and a pox on spammers! Eve

    3. There are now 145 entries uploaded into the 1870 census on the Rensselaer GenExchange site. See if any of your ancestors are there. Thanks to Laura Smith of this list who help with the transcribing of these. -- Pat Connors, Sacramento CA GenExchange Rensselaer County and Westchester County Coordinator http://www.genexchange.org/county.cfm?state=ny&county=rensselaer http://www.genexchange.org/county.cfm?state=ny&county=westchester

    1. [NYRENSSE] Troy 1876 map offer
    2. Pat Connors
    3. I just got a new computer and dismantled the old one without saving my mail and my bookmarks. All is not lost, I just have to set it up again to regain the info. Anyway, one of the census transcriber volunteers asked me about a map of Troy with the wards delineated and I said mine was too big to scan but I would take it to work and shrink it to fit my scanner. So, now I have it scanned into two files and don't have the email address of the person who requested it. I don't want to mention her name but she will recognize this. So, I also open it up to all the listers of Rensselaer County. If you would like the map, email me and I'll send it as two attachments to emails. It is a jpg file and can be opened with any graphic program. 3. Jenn, Another possibility if the census doesn't work out are the Albany Roman Catholic diocesan archives. I have no idea if their records go back that far or how liberal their access policy is, but here's their address and phone number just in case. Good Luck. 1. [NYRENSSE] Eagle Hill Cemetery records posted
    2. Cliff Lamere
    3. I have just posted 46 tombstone records from the Eagle Hill Cemetery (St. Pauls's Cemetery) in Albany. It is primarily a German cemetery. The records were transcribed by Bill and Mary Ann Hildebrand on a trip to Albany about a week ago. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~clifflamere/ Look for "Vital Records - Deaths." It will be the first entry in that category. The next entry is for the same cemetery, but it is described as St. Paul's Cemetery. Cliff

    1. [NYRENSSE] 1880 Troy orphanages
    2. Jenn Olmstead
    3. I'm trying to locate my great grandmother in a catholic orphanage in Troy. I would be happy to transcribe those pages if anyone knows where in the 1880 census they would be located in. Specifically St. Vincent's orphan asylum, or the Troy Female orphan asylum. With a little research I may be able to find them, but if anyone has researched either or any orphan asylum on the Troy 1880 census and can point me in the right direction, it would be greatly appreciated. An e.d. or ward # would greatly narrow it down. I could not find her in the index, but I would like to go through every name myself, I might as well transcribe it while I'm there. Thanks for any help. Jenn

    3. Hello, I am looking for information on the descendants of Beecher Elias and Julia (CLARK) CARPENTER who lived in the area of Troy, NY. Beecher ran a carriage business according to the 1890 City Directory. Beecher died in Tulare, NY. Beecher CARPENTER (1841-1908) mar. 1874 to Julia CLARK. I have ancestral information on both of these lines and am willing to share/swap information. Thank-you for any help you are able to offer! 1. [NYRENSSE] Microfilm ILL Fees of NYS Library
    2. Cliff Lamere
    3. The NYS Library does not charge NY residents for microfilms sent on interlibrary loan. For out-of-state mailings there is a $10 charge. What you can order for the $10 is four consecutive microfilms. That was what I was told a few months ago even though the website did not mention that they had to be consecutive. Maybe it has been corrected by now. Cliff

    3. That's very helpful - thanks. What kind of library do you use? (town, city, community college, county?) That might be good to know since you say you weren't charged. 2. pat connors
    3. There are now 300 entries uploaded into the 1880 census on the Rensselaer GenExchange site. See if any of your ancestors are there. Thanks to Eve Grogan of this list who transcribed 100 of them. So far we have ten volunteers transcribing the 1870 and 1880 Troy census. Since I have both on cds if you want to volunteer let me know and I'll send you a page of the census in a jpg file format. If you have a graphics program you can open the file and print it out. It is the actual page of the census with the original handwriting. I will also send you a template to transcribe the information into (can be Excel, Works, Word, etc.) When you are done, you send it back to me, I send it to GenExchange and then it is on line for the whole world to see and hopefully find connections. If you find an ancestor at the site and would like a copy of the page, I'll make a deal with you. I'll send you the page if you will transcribe another page (40-50 entries). 3. Several people asked where to get microfilms of Cohoes or other NY newspapers. I got mine by interlibrary loan from the New York State Library. Their web site has a complete list of which papers they have for which years. Go to: http://www.nysl.nysed.gov/nysnp/ I seem to remember that a $10 fee was mentioned somewhere on the web site, but it apparently did not apply to my library. The Cohoes city library also has microfilmed newspapers. I don't know their lending policy. If anyone finds a source for Cohoes newspapers, either microfilm or hardcopy, please let me know. The issues I need (Dec 31, 1899 and Jan 1, 1900) are missing from the microfilms I have seen. Good luck. Mark Dionne Newton, MA

    1. [NYRENSSE] A possible source of death records
    2. Mark Dionne
    3. Today I received a microfilm copy of the Cohoes Republican (newspaper) covering Jan thru June 1900. I was looking for an obituary in the Jan 2 issue, and I found that in that issue was a complete list of all the deaths that occurred in the city of Cohoes in 1899. There is a similar list of news events, so you can see who died in a fire, murder or other newsworthy event. If this practice was in place before vital records began to be recorded (around 1882), it could be a way to sleuth out some otherwise impossible-to-find information. Mark Dionne Newton, MA
