    3. Dear Pat Thank you thank you thank you. Hopefully this will end my search. Now just what do I click on? I opened the site below and clicked on 1880 census, typed in name and it told me it wasn't yet available. Did I do something wrong or was I too early? Holding my breath in suspense. 3. I am happy to announce that we now have 794 Troy 1880 census records on line at the Rensselaer County site of GenExchange (see below for url). This is all because of the wonderful volunteer work of Eve Grogan, Lynn Grice, Denise Hernandez and Matt Bloomfield. They and others who are still working on their transcribing have meticulously transcribed difficult writing so we can get this census on line. It is important because this census is not indexed and anyone who ever looked at an unindexed microfilm know it takes forever just to cover one ward. These volunteers and those doing the 1870 census have been working hard and are still working hard to get the information on line. If anyone else would like to help, let me know. I have both censuses on cd for Troy and can send you a sheet for you to transcribe. A hint for searching on the site: Try an number of ways of spelling your surname. The writing is hard to decipher at times plus the enumerators spelled the the name all different ways. My own can be found as: O'Connor, O'Connors, Connors, Conners, Connor, Conner, Conor, Coner, etc. etc. etc. Happy hunting and let us know if you find an ancestor. -- Pat Connors, Sacramento CA GenExchange Rensselaer County and Westchester County Coordinator http://www.genexchange.org/county.cfm?state=ny&county=rensselaer http://www.genexchange.org/county.cfm?state=ny&county=westchester

    3. Hi, Jackie - <<Could someone please tell me what county North Salem, NY is in.>> There is a Salem and a North Salem up in Washington County, NY. It is a small and old village which is also the county seat for Washington County. There are a number of historical accounts and Salem records that are available online for searching at the Washington County GenExchange. Here's the URL: http://www.genexchange.org/county.cfm?state=ny&county=washington <<Also does anyone have or have access to a city directory of North Salem? >> I have the 1871 Washington County business directory that I'm transcribing and entering into the City/County Directories database at the Washington County GenExchange. So far, all the records for every town in the county halfway through Hebron have been submitted and are online. Salem is still on the "to do" list. Good luck with your research! 3. I have posted the 1766 Account of Supplies Given by Men of Egremont to Nobletown People, which was transcribed from microfilm by Susan Mulvey. In 1766, after New Yorkers attacked New Englanders owning land in Nobletown in the present Columbia Co., some land owners escaped to the east with their livestock (to Egremont in the present Berkshire Co., MA). This is an accounting of what was given or spent on the refugees, and for which reimbursement was sought. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~clifflamere/ Go to Other Lists Of People where you can also find the 1757-1767 Noble Town Proprietors Meetings, which are notes kept for meetings of the land buyers/owners. There are also Nobletown baptisms and a few marriages posted on my site (provided by Susan Mulvey). And because of this connection between Columbia Co. and Berkshire Co., MA, I have also added vital records links to that county. Cliff

    2. Just a bit of clarification on the North Salem vs. Salem response. Salem is indeed in Washington Co. However, it is not the county seat. The current county seat is Ft. Edward. I'm unaware of a North Salem in Washington Co. The township immediately north of the Town of Salem would be the Town of Hebron. There is, however, a New Salem, just outside of Voorheesville, N.Y.

    3. We have just been a victim of a political message. The person who sent it, signed up for the list, sent the message and then unsubbed. I have put him/her on the reject list but they were probably using a false address created at Yahoo just for the sole purpose to pass on the advertisement. So, let's drop it and stop referring to it. Also, here's a hint when writing to a list to protest about a message, don't quote it, then you give it more publicity and subject us to it twice. Thanks for your cooperation. 3. I'm just passing this on as asked to do. ----- Original Message ----- Sent: Friday, November 10, 2000 2:00 PM FW: please pass around! Please read this and participate. We cannot allow Gore to undermine the democratic electoral process of the U.S.! United Republican Fund of Illinois Chicago November 9, 2000 From: Joseph A. Morris, President To: URF Leaders and Friends Herewith is some practical advice on action that every citizen can take in the event that the Florida recount confirms the election of George Bush, but Al Gore fails to concede. We all know what is going on in Florida, and that the election hinges on the outcome. I am writing you today to prepare us all for what we will have to do if what I think is going to happen actually does. The recount, which will be finished by 5 p.m. Thursday, will likely show Bush to be the winner once again, with only a few thousand overseas ballots to be counted. Those ballots will be overwhelmingly for Bush, a minimum of 60% and probably closer to 75%. If the count goes our way tomorrow, we have won this election. This is when something critical happens. Either Gore bows out gracefully or he doesn't, and I can almost guarantee he won't. These are people wedded to power who will only go down kicking and screaming. They will use every legal maneuver in the book to steal the election. (In 1960, when Richard Nixon had every right and reason to challenge the election results he didn't for the sake of the country. Expect no such noble behavior this time.) What will they try? One bet is to find a friendly judge to throw out the Florida results on a flimsy premise. They are already floating this as a trial balloon in the form of the allegedly "confusing" ballots in Palm Beach County. I have seen the ballots - they are not confusing in the least. Indeed, they are identical in form to the punch-card ballots used in Chicago and Cook County, Illinois, in this very election. What is more, it is just as likely that Palm Beach County voters who wanted to vote for Bush inadvertently voted for Nader. All parties approved the form of ballot before the election. The form-of-ballot issue is a mere pretext for an effort a judicial invalidation of the Florida election. While I hope this scenario doesn't come to pass, I fear that it will, and it will only have disastrous results for the country. The election fight could drag on for months and actually be decided by a court! If this comes to pass the vision of our Founders and the blood of patriots will have been betrayed. Personally, I am not going to stand for this, and I hope you won't either. The good news is that we are not without voice. HERE IS WHAT [CAN] BE DONE: if the vote count affirms Bush's election, we allow a short grace period to see the reaction of the Gore camp. If they have not graciously conceded after a few hours, we must bombard the news media and our public officials AT EVERY LEVEL with phone calls of outrage that demand Gore's concession. I mean literally millions of phone calls. We must jam their phone banks with calls. There are millions of us so it shouldn't be too difficult. (While you're at it, send e-mails to your local newspapers as well.) If it becomes widely reported - and it will - that there is a groundswell demanding that Gore back down and not embarrass the country, it will be very difficult for Gore to withstand the pressure. He will have to relent. Here are some places to start: The White House: telephone (202) 456-4114 FAX:(202)456-2461 e-mail president@whitehouse.gov The Vice President's Office: telephone:(202) 274-5000 FAX:(202) 456-2883 e-mail vice.president@whitehouse.gov Vice President's Senate Office: telephone: (202) 224-2424 Senator Tom Daschle (Senate Democratic Leader): (202) 224-2321 Also: (202) 224-5556 Representative Dick Gephardt (House Democratic Leader): (202) 225-2671 Also: (202) 225--0100 Also, be sure to call your congressmen and both your senators. All these numbers are easily located on voter.com. You can also contact them through the U.S. Capitol Switchboard: U.S. Capitol Switchboard (all Senators and Representatives): (202) 224-3121 Another office to call is that of Chicago's Mayor Richard M. Daley (the brother of Gore's campaign manager, Bill Daley): Telephone: (312) 744-3300 FAX: (312) 744-2324 If you've never made a call like this, there's no reason to be shy. They get opinion calls all the time and are set up to take them. In fact they like calls. It helps them tell which way the wind is blowing. Some media contacts: Boston Globe (617) 929-2000 Matthew V. Diane is subbed to the Rensselaer list with "dspoo@yahoo.com", the same one she used for the above email message. However, she tried to unsub with "dspoo@uswest.net" and received a message that "you are not removed, your name is not on the list" so then she wrote to list for help. Well, first of all, if any of you have problems with the list, you should write to me and not the list. I will be happy to help you. Second, the computer will only unsub you when you use the email address that is subbed to send the unsubscribe command. Now, if in the case where you have changed servers and can't unsub with the old address, write to me and I can manually unsub you. I hope this helps. Pat Connors, listowner
